I witnessed something in the ER the other night, that I hope I never have to witness again. I am an RN. I work at a hospital in the ER in the Chicago area. We were visiting friends in the Springfield, MO area, and I needed to take my uncle to the ER. There was a couple there, and the husband was obviously trying to pass a kidney stone. He was is SEVERE pain. I know, I have worked with patients like this before. This man was lying on the hospital floor yelling in pain, and they would not see him. Trust me, if you have never passed a kidney stone, you have no idea what this feels like. It is horrible, horrible pain. I don't know how he didn't pass out. Anyway, they told the wife, who was very distraught, that it was going to be at least three hours before he could be seen. Meanwhile, this guy is going berserk with the pain. I CANNOT believe that they were going to let this man suffer like that and not do anything for him for THREE HOURS!!! I finally heard the wife tell them that she was going to take her husband to urgent care. They left, and I hope he was taken care of. It was the most awful, unprofessional thing that I have EVER seen. Shame on this hospital. Where I work, we don't go by first come, first serve, we go by how severe the emergency is. This man was obviously in extreme pain!!
