Had breakfast there. Great service, clean restaurant and facilities. Coffee was mediocre. The food was very bland. Even the bacon had a weird taste. The prices are high. Almost $20 for a cup of coffee, large oj, and their Cowan scrambler. Really? For $20 you can get bottomless mimosas and brunch at other establishments.

We were visiting some friends that live out in Washington and they showed us all around downtown! After lunch we wandered into an antique shop and walked along the water to enjoy the view. By then we'd worked up an appetite for dessert, so we stopped at Cowan's for pie! My husband ordered the Blackberry Pie, which he loved!! He raved about how he could actually taste the berries and how it hadn't been overly sweetened. I had a chocolate pie with meringue topping. The chocolate layer was described to me by the waitress as being a rich, custard. But in my opinion, it's texture was much more like a pudding (not as thick as custard) and it was sweet, not rich. The layer of meringue was about 4 in. tall in the middle and VERY lightly sweetened.

The restaurant itself was very cozy and homey! It was a comfy place to grab a treat!

Homemade Everything at the oldest restaurant in Washington. This is a delightful and quaint dining establishment is recommend to anyone going through Washington. It has a long history of family, homemade food, and a welcoming atmosphere.

They serve breakfast all day. I recommend the biscuits & gravy (I'm a biscuit & gravy person), but all their food is really good.

Lunch & Dinner:
This is a great place for family, friends, aa quick lunch, or even a small business meal. I can be busy, but it's worth the short wait for a home cooked meal here.

I highly recommend getting dessert here!
This location is famous for their Mile High pie. It really is tall, so do it if your in for a treat. I love their pies. Check this place out even if you just want dessert.

Overall, come to CosansC for a pleasant dining experience near the Washington waterfront.

Took a drive to Washington for lunch as we'd seen a photo of their pies on a friend's FB page. Seat yourself which was a bit annoying because we had to walk around the restaurant to stalk a table. They were busy. Split a BLT. Was fine. Nothing special. Pie was very good. Had coconut meringue and cherry crumb (with ice cream). Both great.

The food was fresh and delicious. The service though, was slow and even though we were the only ones there we had to keep looking for our waitress but to they're defense we did stay to closing.

The food and service here is usually excellent. I have always been impressed with the price of the food and what you get. I would recommend this cozy atmosphere restaurant to anyone looking for good breakfast food or regular American staples. This is one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Washington. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Had the full chefs salad with ham ,was disappointed because it was just lettuce couple pieces of tomatoes wedges, very very small bits of diced ham, onion rings and a few slivers of carrots, no egg, no crackers and it wasnt much bigger than the small chef salad my friend ordered, for $8.99. Will not return

Accommodated dietary restrictions very well! Cowan's was able to answer detailed questions about ingredients. They prepared the food perfectly.

We knew we were choosing the right restaurant when we saw the volume of cars parked in front. Service was excellent. Food was good. All of the customer's appeared very happy.

Pies are a specialty. You can can go there just for desert.

Also, there is a private room for special events. Reservation are required for the private room.

Nope.

Nope.
A friend of mine who is America's foremost pie connoisseur recommended Cowan's. I don't know why. I had apple pie. It was muddy in texture and taste with a bush league crust. My wife had blackberry pie that was good at the first bite when it was warm. Taste experience declined as the slice cooled. We decided to go ahead and have dinner - fried chicken. Minimally average. The chx pieces were quite small and you'll never see a smaller dollop of mashed potatoes draped with a glossy, pre-mix gravy.
Most disappointing was the APATHETIC wait service. I sat at my table and watched female teenage servers flirtatiously toss napkin balls at the male teenage cooks while my drink sat empty for 10 minutes. These were sweet kids, but this is a workplace and I wish someone with the last name of Cowan would train them how to work.

Been coming here for the past 10yrs and the food is always great. I've only had one slightly disappointing visit here, it was years ago, I ordered the salmon & my friends ordered what was supposed to be a large appetizer plate, the salmon was so dry i couldn't even eat it, and the appetizer sampler left much to be desired. I think that because I deviated from what I usually order when I'm there is why that particular meal was disappointing. If you stick to their staples, for example, their breakfast is always amazing, the pies are delicious, burgers & fries never bad, and then their daily specials are always good. I have recommended Cowan's to many people while working in customer service here in Washington, anytime someone is looking for a good place for breakfast, Cowan's is always my first place to recommend.

Unfortunately we had terrible service. We waited an hour at our table to be served our food. Once our food was served it was cold and took another 10 mins to get us silverware. We didnt get any syrup with our french toast, but didn't want to wait to ask for some. The sausage in the gravy was nasty sausage pellets you find on cheap pizza. I feel like this place had great potential, but unfortunately we will never return.
