The art gallery is really new and the architecture is nice, however it exhibition is limited.
Good free thing to do to tick off your list. Some cool interactive activities too.
Great little winter market night. Good vibes..mulled wine would have been a hit.
The architecture of this building is out of this world. Stunning build.
What a great place to visit. A shame it was ruined by the lady who was watching the gallery upstairs. We were on a school trip today and she basically stalked our group. The kids were doing no harm but if they pointed at something or God forbid even went close to.a wall or even breathed, she jumped on them and told them off. She was rude and disrespectful and made us feel veey unwlecome. We took the kids there to learn about art and to teach them how to behave in this type of environment. She took all the fun out of it and the kids lost interest and didn't enjoy as a result. Very disappointing
Brilliant and beautifully curated exhibition - thought provoking.
Great place to visit if your in Christchurch. Free to enter and very friendly staff. Art work that makes you appreciate NZ artist talent in addition to creativity. In addition car parking is reasonable priced!
Very cool collection of modern and traditional art. Some of it was a bit weird for my tastes but that's the art world I guess. I also enjoyed the smattering of exhibits outside the building as well. The cherry on the top of the whole visit. The only downside was that we didn't have more time to browse the collections here.
Got some really interesting things at this art gallery. They have a good setup so you aren't walking around in circles. Overall the art here is fantastic! The staff are also very friendly and helpful!
Really nice art. This particular piece caught my eye
Building itself and the works very good. I particularly liked Juliet Peter's work. Definitely has the Eric Rivilious influence. Recommended. Cafe as well.
Christchurch Art Gallery is good place to be around. It has a gallery tour guides, who gives you tons of information and knowledge about the things in gallery. It has a refreshment area as well where you can have light refreshments. I think it's good place for each age group of people
Worth to see. Temporary exhibitions but with a good arrangement idea
The pies met our expectations. As good as Balingup, WA.
There are many museums and art galleries in Christchurch that you can visit for free.
There aren't many famous painters, but please enjoy it.
very rich art work collection..must visit place for art lovers.
Nice gallery for kids to wander around and play inside
It's free. Mixed of modern and old stuff. Good for a rainy day.
Too much modern art for my tastes but an excellent gallery.
I'm not really interested in art but there were a few paintings even I enjoyed.
Btw: the place has great wifi too
We need more of places like this in Christchurch. Great experience.
Fantastic to view art in the city again. Loved the historic paintings. Would be great to see them all together again, instead of separated
This is a very contemporary art gallery which was also designed to offer spectacular views over Christchurch. Touch screens throughout the exhibition areas give extra information about the artist and/or work. It's very well done.
Great variety of permanent and travelling exhibitions. You must see the Ron Mueck sculpture.
I just don't get the majority of this type of art. One photo stuck ontop of another photo, I don't see any artistic value. Etc.
Quite an epic building..... but looking tired and dirty..... Still a nice spot to visit although parking is an absolute nightmare.. . .
Some interesting pieces on display with a nice variety of mediums such as film, projections, using audio and of course classic on-the-wall frames. Arguably under utilised space for such a large building as only so much of it was actually dedicated to the exhibition. Worth a visit, but you won't be making a day out of it.
Has the potential to be a great gallery but the lighting problems were terrible. Too bright with harsh sun in the main area and really dark in the teal rooms, making it almost impossible to read the descriptions. Generally a really nice gallery but lighting needs to change, Make it clear when you can't take photos, can often be confusing when you could take pictures then all of a sudden you couldn't anymore and had to read the descriptions of every artwork to find out if you could or not. Unwelcoming atmosphere from the staff, reception completely ignored us and talked to each other about their personal life rather than addressing customers. Probably wouldn't go back.
Half modern art half classical art. Free entry cant complain about free. Open late on Wednesdays
It was certainly interesting, but I'm not an artist so I don't really understand the things there.
Beautiful, modern and free to enter, however, donations are welcome.
Depends what art you are into. The gallery itself is a lovely modern airy space. Worth a visit
We didn t expect much to be there, but we spend a very fun evening in The museum. Staff was friendly and helpful, we didn t join the tour and just wander off. There are fun things for kids and keep them busy, ask the staff. The closer gives some interesting facts of the paintings. Maori section located upstairs also give us more culture experience to us (other then visiting the Maori Dancing tour). The paintings on Canterbury and those by NZ artist is a perfect wrap of for our road trip in the South Island. The shop has color sectioned souvenirs and some interesting book collections.
Went for a school visit. The art activities were great. All kids enjoyed it. Fabulous staff
Sensational architecture. Excellent collections. Great location.
I asked where the toilets were and was told the RESTROOMS were upstairs. Ok well in NZ we DO NOT HAVE RESTROOMS!! Do we really have to be little clones of Texas or LA and do high-fives every 5 minutes and wear baseball-caps in reverse? I DO NOT know what a restroom is, I do not want to rest in there. Please call it what it is, I am sure americans will cope with a TOILET sign and probably like things to be a little different than at home, or are they here to experience Starbucks and Macdonalds all over again?!
Nicely set out and due to a lack of time we really only got to view the Louise Henderson exhibition. I'd never heard of her so it was a lovely surprise.
This museum is free, and you must deposit your bag after entering
There are artworks outside
Crossing the street to the museum
The museum has exhibits of birds and the history of this country
recommend
Very enjoyable atmosphere, good service, helpful staff without being patronising. Eggs Benedict and chicken salad- well presented and tasty.
Superb. We saw a beautifuly curated exhibition of Fiona Pardington's work and felt quite uplifted.
The gallery is a fantastic space.
There are exhibitions catering to a range of interests, and many allow engagement with children as well. The layout means that on slightly busier days visitors are well spread out, still allowing you the space to take things in.
Had some of my favourite NZ artists exhibited including Rita Angus, Colin McCahon but the Eileen Mayo exhibit was fantastic.
Nice and quite.... some artwork leaves you speechless
This place is a must do while in Christchurch, it offers a wide range of beautiful exhibitions. You could easily spend hours in this amazing place. It is free to do but please given generously at the donations box if you do enjoy it. Art needs support from those who benifit from it.
A nice range of exhibitions which are updated regularly.
Nice range of exhibits which refreshes frequently. Has a conveniently built-in underground parking managed by the Christchurch City Council. Sometimes the ground floor is converted into an events venue for the evening. Very classy place for those who love arts.
Museum admission free with interesting room on the Maori civilization. Other rooms with works by contemporary artists. Good bookshop for purchases.
Arts and stuff, I liked the variety and tastes of the many windows
Always a good place to visit. Nice balance of visiting and own collection exhibits which change regularly. Not always the best for little kids who like to run around but worth checking what's on first as some exhibits are better than others for them
I loved the interactive element of some of the exhibits we went to. It was fun. Can't say that about a lot of museums.
