In the lounge, being served then delivery of food was very slow, the food average, no teaspoons available, no marshmallows with hot chocolate.

Chateau Tongariro
Great old building. Kept very period and original. Amazing food
Went to the chateau for my wedding anniversary, was a great place to stay. Wasnt to busy as we went in the off season. The meal was amazing and the lime tart was to die for
me and my partner loved our stay. friendly staff and beautiful views.. but one concern there was no liquid in our bathroom hand soap dispenser especially during times like this its very crucial. warm blanket was put in cupboard as requested thanks guys!
The staff were friendly and helpful even tought it was busy. Facilities were clean and tidy. Food was yum.
We went to your Tussock Bar and Restaurant on the Monday night, the place is disgraceful! The menu was very limited, food was mediocre, service was terrible, the decor is horrible. I was astounded that you would recommend it to your clients and an alternative for drinks or dinner.
Always a nice stay, but this time with a tour group and had to dine in the new wing not the dining room
The Hotel and customer service was excellent. Everything from the Hotel reception greeting, the prompt check in and check out and the very high level and professional service from the wait staff in the Restaurant. Nothing to complain about and everything to praise. Well done on running a great Hotel. Will be back and will recommend to friends. Already have some other family keen to stay here in the future.
Pros - wasn t very expensive as we got the room for 105$ a night during May - the room view was quite nice and the bed comfortable. - dinner even if expensive was quite tasty. Cons - the breakfast is not very good (other reviews mention this) and therefore not worth the 32NZ$. - the service is just horrendous, and it feels not in par with what the hotel could offer. Apart the lady from reception everyone else seem tired and clearly don t want to be there. Staff are doing enough to keep your table set, but don t expect customer centricity or a how are you doing tonight greeting. - the walls are VERY thin and we could hear everything around us. Our room was closer to the elevator so hearing a bing every time someone called the elevator was of an indescribable annoyance.
Classy and elegant. Great location, friendly staff, lovely food.
Pretty, lovely Beautyfull hotel
Amazing staff, very helpful and personable. Beautiful rooms. Food was exquisite.
We're here right now we've got a Room upstairs . had high T beautiful The room is fantastic The Stuff absolutely great . A fantastic building Like stepping back in time a Must see for anyone sit down Relax have a drink and just soak it all in
This hotel deserves more than just 5 stars. We came after a hike, weather was moderately from rain to snowfall and sunshine everything, soaking wet. We wanted to eat something and the friendliness with which we were served was excellent. The food was sensational. There are 5 we still like to think back today.
Love this place. Yes it's a little tired on the inside but the Grandness stands out. The setting is unbeatable. The High Tea is a total pleasure at the end of a long drive. Rooms are super-comfy and warm. We are really, REALLY spoilt to be allowed to stay at such a place. :)
Nice and clean hotel, but VERY dated decor. Kind of had a The Shining vibe about it, if you get what I mean. Close to the mountain though, so pick up for the hike was easy.
Fantastic hotel. Great place to stay with a group. Kids had a ball - movies and pool to keep occupied when not out hiking or skiing. Food and service exceptional. Pros: warm, ambiance, views, food (although it is expensive!). We made full use of the enormous serviced lounge. Cons: check your free breakfast is free and not included in a seperate rate that will be added at check out. Get that in writing. Needs to be perfect: masseuse (day spa even better) and kids ski program (all inclusive type). We wouldn t really need to leave the hotel at all then :)
We waited an hour after the check in time for our room. Top sheet was ripped! Drinks service was really slow. Restaurant service was good but the "gluten free" option was not gluten free - bet that would lead to a massive suit in USA!!!! The place is tired and needs a refresh to be a premium venue.
the historic hotel, sheltered below the peaks of Ruapehu, is an iconic location, old style luxury in the remoteness of the National Park. Ideally situated to make the most of the great outdoors, the Hotel is comfort and style, relaxed and catering, a perfect addition to a holiday in the mountains.
ideal short getaway , food was great , accommodation excellent & lots of walks close by.
Pretty simple really. Inexperienced, but helpful staff. You tried to charge us $147 for breakfast, which you corrected when we pointed it out. Your checkout person said it was her error, but really, how hard is it to say you are sorry? As for dinner, your prices and positioning are distinctly fine dining, but plastic formica tables with no table cloths on them? Lazy and unacceptable. I've been coming to The Chateau for five decades pretty much every year and I'm not sure I would do it again. Your only redeeming feature is the landscape, not the hotel experience, sorry. The room was good, the staff OK, but now over-priced for a mediocre experience.
Cool experience and locstion. Personally love this era, so that was fun.
I reviewed the hotel on expedia before booking from the hotel site since expedia was malfunctioning. Expedia's description of the fergusson rooms gives no mention that it isn't a room in the hotel. So i took my wife to a motel on our honeymoon. I appreciate the free chocolate but still feel the description on expedia is deceitful. The wifi didn't reach our motel room and the room felt cheap. I've had much nicer stays throughout new zealand and much lower cost.
Excellent cafe. Not many other options around here though....
Reasonable room and ex. Rates. Wait staff worked under pressure which made service a litte slow but one stand out, Loise who took the time to make sure we went away with with a smile
I m a local,me and my friends we had a bad experience today. The food very expensive and you don't get enough for the price. Do we going to go back there? No No. You can find food in Turangi or Waiouru.
Beautiful hotel in the national park built in the 1920's. Great views, very convenient for all the hiking trails. Good buffet breakfast.
I would like to thank Julian for his lovely service and attention to detail. Megan the Tour coach driver.
Room was fine, smallish, but had a nice view of Mt Ngauruhoe. The bathroom was very dated and tired, in desperate need of a renovation, shower over bath unsafe... and the plastic shower curtain ... well, haven't seen one of those since the 1970s. The room seemed clean enough, but was very dusty, our iPads, the TV and surfaces literally gathered a large amount of dust during the stay. In the Ruapehu Room Restaurant, the drapes are rotten and fallen off the rails. The whole place is looking very tired and badly maintained. We were very disappointed to find the Hot Pool and Sauna are no longer operational. I had been wanting to return to the hotel since I stay there at 12 years old, now 49 it was a huge anti-climax, so much so, we checked out a day earlier and returned to Auckland to await our flights back to the Gold Coast. You can definitely tell this establishment is no longer in Kiwi hands, such a shame.
The room was terrible, not even a bar fridge, the meal was far from fine dining, the heated pool was a joke and not even hot, Im sorry to say but I'm really disappointed in almost all facets of our stay.
The Chateau disappointed me as the rooms don t even have knives or forks, a microwave or a toaster, meals were way too over priced as well as with the accommodation especially since the rooms did not have the above, when we arrived there was a charge taken from my debit card in case of damages in the room we stayed in, promised my money would return in my account, it s been two weeks now and my money isn t back and there were no damages. Up side me and my partner got engaged and my massage was amazing, Bernice s customer service was very welcoming, would highly recommend her!!
Stunning building. Amazing spot. Didn't stay, just went for a drive to see it. Would love to stay one day though. Must come back in winter to see it in the snow.
Experience not so good. Very expensive comparatively. Nothing much to see in that area.
Nice rooms, Nice meal, but the staff were 100% brought in from Fawlty Towers. We were always looking for the hidden camera that was filming some kind of prank show - The main waiters needed schooling in the order things came out, the basics of dining and didnt know that the red wine was to come out with the mains etc - A great place let down by amature staff. It was funny but shouldn't have been.
Very polite staff, wonderful decoration, good stay for a snack, you have to go in although you are not a guest for a night
Worst service experience in NZ. If you're not a guest and just want to have a cup of tea be prepared to be ignored for half an hour. We finally left. At least we enjoyed the atmosphere.
A cool spot with a great atmosphere. Restaurant is mediocre and overpriced.
Great atmosphere great service excellent way to spend a weekend Big thanks to Polly
Overall a nice experience. Upsides were the excellent meals (dinner and breakfast), and a cosy if slightly old fashioned room. Main downside was the poor service in the lounge bar, although the gin and tonics (when they finally arrived) were first class. A pity not more made of the open fireplaces. Generally very good and no doubt we will come again.
I was disappointed with my stay at Chateau Tongariro. Instead of getting a room in the hotel they put me up in some 2 star cabin on another street that was managed by a different company. The facilities such as the swimming pool, gym and snooker table were all in terrible condition. Lastly, the staff were unhelpful and made me feel unwelcome. The nicest thing about the place is the heritage building.
We decided to assist domestic tourism and chose your hotel The breakfast buffet was satisfactory although it would be great to have teapots available rather than mugs for tea I selected 2 croissants on the first morning and then noticed both had jam on them I spoke to the restaurant manager expressing my concerns that it appeared to me these may have been recycled....she assured me they weren't but given the covid concerns I wouldn't expect food to be cross contaminated and put out for consumption! We stayed in cabin 1 and arrived around 5 PM Feedback is we were disappointed as the room was icy cold It would have been more welcoming had some heating been on to take the chill and damp out of the air It took quite some time to warm up the room The shower curtain and base didn't contain the water which soaked the floor On Wednesday morning extra floor mats, towels, tea bags and milk were requested On our arrival back in the late afternoon these items had not been delivered We had to call and request again The condensation in the bathroom was extreme In short we were underwhelmed!
Wonderful old world hotel, sitting majestically at the foot of the volcano Mt Ruapehu. The beautiful drapes, carpets, ceilling mouldings, chandeliers and furniture hark back to a bygone era, but it is warm and welcoming. The staff are efficient, pleasant and accomodating; each doing their jobs very well. We had a wonderful stay and would love to come back again.
We stopped in at the Ruapehu Lounge Bar. Great old building and awesome views. Surprised the only table service we got was to serve the bill and deliver the food (not to take orders). We all had a drink and ordered the farmhouse platter to share. It was the most generous platter we had ever seen, and at $30 good value for a small group. The food was good, the views great, but the service could be faster and more professional
Great place to stay with your family! Love the breakfast <3
Lovely old Hotel with beautiful scenery around. The Hotel is about 90 years old and has nothing lost of the Charme of those days. Cosy lobby area with Snooker table and from some places view to Mount Ngauruhoe. The Rooms are practical and nothing exciting. Nor the bathroom. Plastic shower. But in fact, not that interesting, if you can hike the hole day. Ruapehu Room restaurant is very good. We had the lamb shoulder one day. Fantastic. Very soft and tasty. Only the service must be improved. Different wines out of the same Glas?! Asking wether the starter is finished, also the plate is more than full, and cutlery open on the plate.... Water refill slow.... The do have enough stuff running around, but nobody seems to care, what's with your table.... But, all in all, highly recommended.
Great stay, definitely worth a visit at least once in a life time. Breath taking views all round. The hotel stay itself was absolutely fantastic very authentic and memorable stay. 11/10
This is a place, that I love. The moment you walk in, you feel like you have gone back in time. Everything is spotless, authentic and warm. A place I love and enjoy every single time we return.
Amazing High tea, fabulous dinner, welcoming staff, who took time out to have a chat. Clear day saw the mountain in all its glory. Great personal touch, a card and chocolates for my birthday.Rooms comfortable. all in all I would recommend the Chateau to anyone.
Wonderful views and location. Dinner was wonderful...only thing was the bathroom was a little shabby... but it is an old hotel. Staff lovely. Great place to stay.
Fantastic, top quality iconic and picturesque hotel on the lower slopes of Ruapehu. Great restaurant and cafe to suit formal or casual dining. Beautifully appointed and presented heritage rooms. A BIG hit with the family - such a warm, inviting and friendly place to stay with the children - relaxing main lounge with good board games a bonus. Staff all great, professional and welcoming. A must for a return visit.
Great experience. Very nice place with an amazing scenery
The best hotel, complete facilities, very friendly staffs, very delicious foods. Definitely will be recommended to our friends and families for staying there. And we will love to come back again good job and well-done teams.
This was the second time we stayed at Chateau Tangariro. We loved everything about this hotel: the location, architecture, history, service, view from the lobby and our room... The facilities seemed a bit old, but the bed was comfy, and everything was very clean. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back again!
It's with mixed feelings I give this place 3 stars. Everything in the hotel is old, no AC, dirtyish carpets in the room and funny old smell in the corridors and the gym area.
Probably your best hotel type option in the area, but the hotel is old and in need of renovation. No aircon in rooms. Food is good from the dining room, but service is very slow due to being understaffed.
the service from the staff was incredible -made the whole time really special which was great. Our room was lovely, fresh and clean and lovely and warm on arrival. The main part of the hotel as nostalgic as it is is looking a little tired. some things look like they could benefit from a bit of a clean, get the lights, curtains that are off their hooks, the plastic palm trees. but i don't like to complain as its not a big deal, but you can be more forgiving if its old and lovely rather than old and a little grumpy. The breakfast options were the best i have ever experience, fantastic, but again our chairs were broken and the dining room is looking a little tired also. but thank you for keeping the place a lovely hotel to stay at - we did love our time there
Lovely that the Chateau has retained its charm. Beautiful location. However I do feel the pool area needs upgrading. Also, a survey on how many guests actually use the bathtub may result in replacing some rooms with a better shower cubicle only. . Otherwise room was well appointed, comfortable bed and the restaurant was good.
Over priced, but you pay for location and attention
Stopped in for a coffee as the weather was horrid. Service good. Comfortable sofas to sit about on and newspapers.
When booking from Booking I said that I do not need to pay until September 19 after making my reservation, after a few days, try to collect the reservation without my authorization and, for some problem with them with my card, I imagine because it is not mandatory to pay for In advance they did not have the 3-digit code on the card, they could not make the charge and they canceled my reservation without prior notice and without any reason. Now there is no availability and I had to look for accommodation in another hotel much further away. Very bad service. What a amazing place staff are so sweet and caring thank you for making our stay the best we ever had
4 stars ? No, or 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. What a mess, because everything is together to make it a magical step. Already on arrival, we were amazed to see a valet crossing his arms, and who never came to offer his help to bring the luggage to our room. Around 17:00, we had to slalom in the corridors with our suitcases between the piles of linen scattered on the floor. A beautiful room (Heritage room at 230 NZD), it's true, with a view on a wall and a roof, a bathroom that was to be modern 50 years ago, and a minibar ... desperately empty. The wifi connection is dismal. While waiting for the meal, we decided to go down to have a cocktail in the living room by making our postcards. Beautiful living room, very British, with pianist. But we waited more than 20 minutes before we could meet a waitress (obviously depressed given the complete absence of a smile), who asked us what we wanted. Do you have a map? 10 minutes more for her to bring us one. And then nothing. After 15 minutes, I had to get up to place the order myself at the bar. After 1 hour, we finally received our drink. Then we went to the restaurant, Ruapehu Room, the top of amateurism (the bartender, French, confirmed to us after the meal that the waiters had no skill for restaurant service, and that it was employees originally hired to do the rooms that were tested at the restaurant to upgrade). I make a separate comment about this.
The Chateau is located in a NZ national park and the buildings and business are Malasian owned now. It is an iconic place to stay for a Kiwi and is one of the older hotels in NZ. Whilst old the building and rooms are reasonably tidy though not 5 star. Getting a booking in their resturants is difficult as they are not run at full capacity and they run a policy of bumping you downstairs to their cafe or down the road to their pub. Book dinner before your stay to avoid dissapointment.
Enjoyed our experience there. Staff were friendly, the lounge was fantastic and the room was cosy and warm. In our room, we heard some stomping above us, but called room service and they sorted it out. The pool and sauna were nice. Would stay here again!
It is our second time staying, we thouroughly enjoyed it both times.
The hotel is very good. On the other hand the staff of the restaurant as well as the service leaves something to be desired ...... We even had the right to a little hypocrisy ......
Love the Chateau...perfect place for a wine and hot chips after a good hike to the Taranaki Falls. Great service, spectacular hotel and super comfy chairs.
Loved our stay here .It is well worth going to this place .It is like stepping back in time .If you can get a special accommodation package it is even better
Yester-year hotel where the pluses include an opulent timeless atmosphere and minuses include a room that was a bit tired looking. The staff were first class and went out of their way to really make sure we had a wonderful time (extra birthday treats in the room for my mother's 80th birthday, and also for us celebrating our 25th weeding anniversary). The Ruapehu Room dining experience was 10/10! We loved every minute.
Great location, moderate hotel. Food is OK, room clean, but unfortunately everything is getting old. Then, unfortunately, price-performance no longer fits.
Nice stay. The service and amenities are great, but the whole thing could use a fresh coat of paint and new carpet. Overall good stay. Location is amazing!
The tour is arranged here for lunch, the meal and service are very good, it is a good experience.
Beautiful Hotel Beautiful location Excellent service
