Canyon County Animal Shelter Review

Took my stray I was dropping off and said it would euthanized because it had ringworm.

My puppy was picked up yesterday after escaping the yard why i was at work. I went down to the shelter at 11 as soon as they opened to get him out. He was in a little kennel covered in his own fecal matter. I asked if someone could please clean him a bit before getting into my vehicle, the response i got was, "not sure if someone is here to do that right now." As i watch atleast 15-20 employee's working at the time. I left with him chipped and registered for a decent price but still bothered on his conditions.

We got a really nice chihuahua from here last weekend. The staff was very helpful and friendly. This was a much better experience than what we had a year ago with the choice of dog we picked out then. Thanks West Valley.

There are good cats and dogs that need homes there.

I've lived here in Nampa for three years and today was the third time of disappointment with this animal shelter. They wouldn't take a stray cat at all claiming they are full!! Yet they have a big room full of adoptable ones! This may seem like a logical understanding but my main complaint is the ladies at the front desk ARE VERY SNOTTY and expected me to drive out to the shelter in Boise!! And they wouldn't even call the Boise shelter for me in case that place was full so I wouldn't waste gas. I didn't bother calling them myself because I don't want to waste the gas when I can try Pet Haven. Pet Haven has NEVER failed me! And they do treat pets there better!
They don't have a caretaker that throws dogs/animals into their cages like at the canyon county shelter!!

We got a small dog from them a while ago and they claimed he was neutered. He was not, then when they did neuter him, they also declawed him. Well when we took his bandages off, there were stitches. When I called them to find out about them they told me they had no record of the procedure being done. Now I have to take him to a vet because they got infected.

I don't think they actually answer phones. 2 days and can't get anything besides voice mail.

5 years ago we adopted 2 dogs from this shelter and we felt like we saved a furry lives and now they are huge part of our lives, now we are looking for the third one to add to our family, went there and I don't know what happened to the place, all they care is about money. Adoption fees are sky rocket, to 400 for a mix breed dog that look as same as the one next to it who is registered pure breed Sheppard. What happened?? Isn't is supposed to be about animals and not money??? Shame on you!! I feel bad for all furry guys there!! And customer service is the worst, not to mention never pick up their phone.

Even after BBBR offered to take pit bulls they chose to murder these dogs. The dogs had passed temperament test and were deemed adoptable. However west valley decided to put them down. When Boise Bully breed rescue found out they requested to take the dogs, hundreds of people contacted west valley to release the dogs, but west valley murdered them anyway. Please do not bring your animal in to be surrenderrd to this so called shelter.

What a wonderful group of staff making sure that McCoy and I were a Great fit!! A well structured very clean compound full of loving dogs. It's the place to head to for sure to adopt a wonderful !!

I was looking for a certain cat for two weeks and I finally found one at this shelter. I put in an application and within an hour I got a call to set up an appointment. I showed up early and got helped right away! The staff was amazing. I adopted the kitten right then and there. The were so informal on her care since she was just fixed. Thank you so much to the staff at West Valley. Now we have a new member in our family!

i brought my new puppy in for microchipping and the girl's I dealt with were super friendly and answered my questions. well definitely be coming back from vet care.

They were wonderful. Unfortunately we had to put down 2 of our beloved pets on the same day and they handled the situation with such extreme kindness and care...very respectful and were very courteous toward us.

If you are thinking about getting a pet please go check this place out. So many animals need homes who had homes it's sad to see all of them caged up and lonely

You'll always have negative reviews with any company. We live in a world where we can't please everyone. Everyone will find a reason to be negative. But I wanted to take a second and thank the humane society. We made the decision to get our 1st family dog. The experience was perfect. We adopted our dog Sonya this past Tuesday. She needed fixed so we were looking at a week to get her. Well last night I decided let's go back and play with her while waiting for her to join our family. When we showed up, the pour staff was trying to handle tons of people angry because they had to wait. We waited patiently to find out our dog was ready to come home. Best surprise ever. Boom time to take our newest member home. Well it's been truly amazing. This pour dog has been sitting in that pound for a long time because she's a pit bull. Well I'm glad no one adopted her. Hands down best dog ever. Truly loyal. She is house trained. She knew where her bed was. Doesn't need a leash. Stands right by my side and knows commands. She was a blessing in disguise. Adopt a dog people. Save a life. Thank you WVHS for such an amazing experience. We are truly blessed

My DOG got away from me, the care n compassion shown by the Staff was incredible..... Many Blessings to all whom support this facility..

Great people, doing a difficult job, love the way they take care of the animals as if they were their personal pets.

They were very friendly but there was a problem with communication between them and my client. She was told one thing but when someone else talked to her they said the only vet they have was sick.

They should reconsider hiring new employees for the front desk. They rarely answer the phone and forget to update you if an animal has been already adopted (drove all the way from Bodo during 5 O'Clock traffic only to be disappointed). You also won't get an email response in a timely matter.

They make you leave your animals in the car in the hot heat, not cool in Boise humane society they will fine you for that and they welcome the animals in and tell you to have one person stay with the animal while the other person goes back to look at the kennels and then switch also my fiance rescued a sweet 1 year old Finnish spitz puppy from there 6 years ago they said that the dog was vicious and needed to be put down she is now 7 years old and a big sweetheart everyone who meets her tells how sweet she is and what a good dog she is anyone who meets her and hears that they wanted to put her down is shocked because she is so sweet and the furthest thing from vicious for heavens sake she wouldn't hurt a flea these people are sick and they should be shut down for animal cruelty

Took good care of my cat when we had to put her down.

I think the prices are too high. I only paid $48 for my dog at Idaho Humane Society in Boise, but it was in 2004. I just paid $165!! I guess things are different now.
Also, having to wait 12days to take my dog home because of their wait time for neutering seems very wrong. They should be better organized than that !

They had our ferret. It was easy to get him back and they were very pleasant to work with.

West Valley Humane Society is such a great place to get a forever pet! The staff are so passionate about these animals too! They stay very busy, so please be kind.

How could you give puppy away in front of little boy that was sick.You are heartless and cruel . Everyone I've talked too that seen you on the TV NEWS says you was a very cold and uncaring person. Maybe thats why we hear you kill so many dogs and cats. Hasn't this family had enough medical problems. The pic of little boy and dog was heartbreaking you are a very uncaring whatever you are.

Very kind and compassionate. Care about the health of your animal and you add a person.

I like what they do but they are very picky about owners, which I get but still inconvenient. Also staff is abrupt.

I recently adopted a ferret here and the staff were super patient with me and my ma. He's a healthy, chaotic little boy that my entire family loves. We llove stopping by to see what they've got, and plan on adopting from them in the future.

These people and liers and theives and now I don't the money to bring my dog home

We waited 3 hours here to get our dog for the first time. It was 270 or we can get him surgery and it would be 85. We can't even see him or pet him. Now we have to wait 2 weeks

Recently rescued in English bulldog which apparently had all the surgeries done I get him home and come to find out when I take him to my vet he had no surgeries done besides his neuter which was obvious

We adopted a puppy there recently and were not happy with the process. We have another dog who is large, and they wanted us to have the scared and nervous puppy meet our full grow large dog in a very confined space- which we did not feel was appropriate. When we tried to find out more about her history to help us understand her better- the staff available at the time did not seem to know anything. They also did not know whether or not she had been spayed- even though we had been told the day before that we could not see her that day due to this (whether or not a dog has been spayed or not seems like a major bit of information...). They also released just prior to us taking her home, that she did not already have her rabies vaccination. We have been having a lot of unexpected behavior issues with her now- so we tried to call and find out more information on her history so we can take a better approach to trying to train her- and no one seems to know anything about her....not helpful....

It's great that they're rescuing animals, but their adoption fees are insane! They're charging $250 - $450 for some of their dogs. Are you serious? That's not rescue- it's robbery.

They had are 6 week old lab puppy less than 4 hours it took us over a hour and $230.00 to get him back what a rip off if I could give them less then one star I would

I cannot even begin to explain how angry and hurt I am with them.
I attempted to adopt a dog from them, neither the WVHS or the foster mother returned my calls or emails.
I contacted them on messenger and was told that the foster mother and someone named Keira had stated they had numerous conversations with me.
When I said this was a blatant lie I was then told " it's all been a miscommunication" that I was not "ignored" and that if I wanted to give them my phone and email they would be happy to contact me. What? Remember they stated they had spoken to me numerous time! I will be happy to share the messages on messenger to anyone

Not anything they don't take care of the animals I adopted two cats and they both have ear mites do they even have a vet on site. Do the vets even know what they are doing.

A little sad we had to find new homes for some pets but the staff was friendly and informative.

I have adopted 3 dogs from the shelter. But I have seen a lot of people share on facebook of them putting dogs down for more space for other stray dogs. I will not be going to this shelter again.

The only reason I'm gracing this place with one star is because you have to leave AT LEAST that to write a review. And trust me, I want to write a review.

How are these people still around? I called six times after 11 only to get their voicemail. I normally wouldn't have been bothered to make the fifteen minute drive to the shelter, but their "dog of the week" was too cute to pass up; and, since no one had the decency to answer the phones, I made the trek. When I got there, I was greeted by four women standing around, arguing with each other (and the people in line).

It was "my turn" when they were still helping a woman who was attempting to adopt a dog. I asked them if the dog of the week was still available and they said, "Oh, that? Oh no. That picture's been on the site for MONTHS now. It must be part of the wallpaper or something." After I stated that I called six times, one of the women huffed and said, "Well, I TRIED calling you back and NO ONE answered." Hey, maybe if they answered the first six times, there wouldn't have been a need to call back the phone I left unattended to go down to their business so my questions would be answered!

In short, they're missing the necessary motor skills to pick up a telephone, they're not technologically advanced enough to edit some CSS/HTML, and they lack the fundamental decencies.

By the way, if more than one family wants a dog, they hold a raffle. Talk about professional.

The women at the front counter were rude and didn't want to help me get my dog. They made me wait 45 minutes to speak to anyone about my pet and even when they did speak to me I felt as if they were just trying to tell me what I had to do instead of help. They were very rude and I won't be bringing my animal here ever again

Adopted a kitty who had recently been spayed. Got it home and a stitch had come out and the kitty was bleeding. Called West Valley and was told they don t do follow ups and no vet is available and we are on our own. CALL OUR OWN VET THEY SAID. They literally sent us home with a cat with issues they caused, then refused to help whatsoever. Sending people away with animals then refusing to help the very next day is horrible business. Please avoid this shelter as they are immoral and unhelpful. Honestly staggered by their rude response and complete lack of help or understanding. Would tell people to use this facility only as a LAST RESORT.

I found a little dog and was willing to keep it and find the owner. I posted on all of the lost pet sites and craigslist. I called to tell the shelter that I found her and was told I had to drive out to put a note on the board. The owner drove out to the shelter twice before she saw my ad on craigslist. I appreciate the hard job that they do there but a short note saying *small, tan dog found in Nampa 208-467-****" would have got the dog home sooner and easier. Maybe a 2 minute task.

One of the best places in the world I was having trouble trying to find a way to buy dog food and they helped me out which was terrific really awesome place!!!!!!!

Had an excellent experience adopting my pup from West Valley. The shelter is run very professionally, was very clean, and had a huge yard where I got to meet and play with my dog.

Jacqui was very accommodating to my situation (I drove up from California to meet my dog). She offered to call me in case my dog was adopted before I got there and even checked in the morning before the meet and greet.

I don't know where all these salty reviews are coming from. Almost every one of these complaints could have been avoided if they read the policies clearly laid out on the website and when you call in!

Huge thank you to everyone at West Valley that gave a home to my buddy before I found him. Y'all are angels.

Staff should have more heart. They seem desensitized to the trauma these animals and people go through. It takes the right kind of heart to rescue/surrender/adopt. I'm no activist, or animal freak or what-have-you but taking a LOST dog there made me feel very badly, I can't imagine how people that have to take their pets there feel. It was rather cold. Appreciate that they are homing and feeding the dog though.

Brought our mutt in for meet with dog we wanted to adopt. Shelter pup could not stand our hyperactive puppy . Asked them to help us pick one. They found us very mellow playful dog that's been wonderful.

This place is a joke. If I could give it zero stars I would. Too many animals in unhealthy environments. And from what I've been told by first hand accounts, they had so many cats that majority of one's that came in, at least during the early part of summer, went from the front desk to the euthanasia room because "there's too many to care for." No kill shelter my ass.

I went in looking for a kitten for my elderly aunt and had to leave. Because it was so sad to see all the animals without homes.

Sweet folks trying their best to take care of all the pets that come their way. I've seen dogs, cats, guinea pigs, ferrets, and other animals there. Due to COVID, everyone will need to make appointments, wear masks, and plan for extra time.

The staff seems knowledgeable. They love the animals. We adopted 2 kittens from there.

Got an amazing family pet and he loves it here. They were super nice and even let us pick out a toy and a sweater for him for free. That toy he got that day still remains his favorite toy even a year later. I think he knows that was the day he came home and it s very special to him.

My sister had to surender her puppy to the humane society because she had parvo and she didnt have enough to cover her medical needs she had given them all her info and had informed them that she was going to adopt her back they had told her to watch the page everysingle day and she did but never once was her puppy on there nor on their facebook page saying she was up for adoption. She had been watching the website ever since she took her in on November 16 and not once was she posted untill my sister saw a picture that was posted on november 25 saying she was adopted either this place dosent post all dogs or they just give out wrong information they had told her to watch the website everyday. She took their word and believed and trusted them that she would get her back and she was also informed by one of the workers that was fired from there that they really dont care about dogs getting reunited with owner or if they get adopted. all they care about is the money. She called and asked and they told her they dont post surenderd dogs so they also gave her fasle info when they told her to watch the page everyday. So if they dont post surrendered dogs how do they get adopted? Super crooked and shady. Dont trust them. The reply states she was posted for adoption however, when called and asked about the situation we were told that surrendered animals are not posted for adoption. So again how does a dog not get posted but get adopted. Clearly someone is giving false information at the shelter.

We found a dog running around on 12th Ave. He was minutes from getting killed. He jumped in the truck and we took him to this place. Terri scanned him and he had a chip and I was able to return this great dog to his owner. You may think this is just the pound but they love animals and fo everything they can to get them home with their owner's. I would have kissed Terri if it was appropriate. This place isn't what you might think. They are completely awesome. Five Stars......

We adopted a beautiful little boy about a week ago and have been waiting for the call to pick him up and whenever I get the rare chance of talking to a receptionist I get the same line. "Wait for us to call you." Now I get that some things could take a little longer than they expect and that's fine. But what is just so upsetting is the fact they reuse to tell me what is going on with him, won't tell me when he is going into surgery, and nobody will clean his kennel even though he has kennel cough. I will go to another place or craigslist before I even concider bringing a dog here or adopting one.

If I could give this place NEGATIVE stars I would!!! I have NEVER been mistreated in all my life by anywhere like I was today by WVHS. My moms dog got out while we were watching her and was unfortunately taken to this place.. I waited for them to open so I could get her back. They hadn t even put her in an assigned kennel before I spotted her and pointed her out. In other words, claimed her. I had all the proof they needed that she belonged to our family and they made us go round and round to release her to us. My husband waited out in the car with our kids including my 4 month old baby for 2 hours!!! After getting all the information they asked they wound up charging us TWICE the amount that was quoted to me originally. I paid $100 to get my moms dog out that was only in there from 7pm the night before. $100!!!!! I was quoted $50 which was still absurd considering she was only in there for 16 hours!!!!! Most of which were unsupervised... they didn t like how I was defending myself to their downgrading ways so they literally ignored me! Wouldn t accept my payment.. walked away from me three different times! My infant son needs me to feed him and was screaming in the car with my husband waiting for his Mommy to come back to feed him. This place is dirty and is out for $$$ I hope your fur baby never has to spend even a night here!

I got to meet and greet with a dog. The place is clean and well kept.

This is a great resource for the treasure valley. They have a veterinarian on site, and once a week they offer spay or neuter clinic at a reduced rate. Very compassionate staff, they were helpful and informative as well. I am very happy with the service we received.

The animals at WVHS are taken care of with care and love, these animals are lucky ducks to be at this shelter. We got both our beloved poochies here and we couldn't have been happier. Their dedication to animal welfare is truly humbling and awe inspiring.

Got a great dog here. The staff was friendly even working with me after their closing timing. Cat enclosure was clean and we'll kept. There was plenty of volunteers to help with the animals.

We love our cat, Panda. He s very special to us and a great addition to the home!

Took a lost dog in that our boys had found. They take great care to locate the owners and do whatever needed to help reconnect pets and owners. The little guy we took in had no tags and no chip BUT his owners had filed a missing report so they were able to get them back together that same night.

Way out in the middle of know where. Friendly staff and knowledgeable people. Not keen on the holding pens for the animals, but it's still a good place for them to get adopted from.
