My friend was heartbroken after the loss of her fur-baby a week ago. She came to this shelter looking for some healing. She picked out an orange tabby, but the shelter wouldn t let her take the 2 month old female home until she was spayed. She was spayed on Tues and passed away this morning from complications of being spayed too early. Female cats should not be spayed until they are at least 4-6 months old. This is inexcusable. This poor cat is gone and my friend is devastated over something that never should have happened. These people really should have known better and did not protect the animal at all.

West Valley Humane Society is working very hard to be a responsible animal shelter with minimal euthanasia. I adopted my black lab mix, Sadie, two years ago. She was a 15 year old owner surrender and, because of her age, most shelters would have put her down. Although she is getting a little slower, she is still loving life! The staff and volunteers work very hard. I will definitely get my next dog there.

Was NOT impressed with the front staff. I heard this place was suffering, I just didn't know how bad. Still, dogs and cats need to be rescued. We found the sweetest lab mix there. So, sad about their living conditions out there. I am totally against the sleepovers they let people do. Owning a pet is a privilege.

Very kind and friendly staff. Entrance smells like dog urine, but you can easily ignore that. Dogs galore. Please do your part and adopt! All they want is a loving owner to care and love them. 11/10

Hope your dog never has to go there. My dog escape...

Hope your dog never has to go there. My dog escaped while some else was watching him. Animal control took him to WVHS. Microchip company said he was with Animal control, animal control said he was at WVHS. Call them and they say they have no record of him but they'll call me. They never call and finally the person who was watching him goes to the shelter and identifies him and calls me to let me know he's there.

I go to pick him up, I don't have enough money to get him out unless they neuter him. Neuter is going to take a week, and they are not allowed to open his cage to let him see me. The next day I call to ask if I can bring him a blanket with my scent and treats. They say yes, but as soon as I get there they are rude and try to talk me out of leaving anything for him.

Finally the day comes for me to pick him up, I call asking what time and they just say "we'll call you, but defiantly by 5:30pm". 5:30 comes around, no one has called, of course. I go to pick him up, they tell me he doesn't need a cone because he's not licking at his incision. I insist he gets a cone, they charge $15 for it. They go put a cone on him, say it doesn't fit, then go put a bigger one on.

Finally I get to see him and he has water dripping from him and there are clumps of what I assume is poop, and something sticky (sap?) stuck in his fur. The cone is so big he can barley walk and his head tips over. Vet tech claims he wont need it anyway because he's not licking. Wont give a refund but accepts it back as a donation. A week later he's at the vet and he has kennel cough and an infection (you know, from licking it... we did end up wrapping the area to try to prevent it though), and the vet says the incision is in the wrong place. Now he won't stop peeing on himself. He has another appointment on Monday. I wish this nightmare would end.

The staff has been great to deal with. We have found two amazing g dogs that have fit well with our family. We are extremely happy with both of out experiences. We adopted 2 beautiful pitbulls and the trainers were very honest about any training issue both dogs had. They even facilitated a meeting to ensure both the boys would adapt well. They are both not agressive, potty trained, don't chew,or bark unnecessarily. I would say we hit the jackpot twice. Thank you "

There were several things that did not go smoothly during our adoption process with West Valley. First, we came in to look at a specific kitten who they told us had not been adopted yet and was at Petsmart. We drove to Petsmart to be told More

I ve never experienced being treated so poorly. I don t have a whole lot of money and this place basically held my cat hostage and forced me to pay a fee to get my cat out. I explained how it was either I eat or get my cat back and the reply was well your pet can stay here for up to 3 days or we put him up for adoption if you can t pay the fee by the third day and we can t Guarantee he ll still be by that time . I was absolutely blown away by this. My pet isn t just a pet , he s family.
The part that really upset me was they made me pay for a Rabies shot before I received my cat and then they didn t even give him the shot!!!!! They gave me a voucher for the following week and now I m sitting here trying to figure out how to feed and transport my son and I for the next 5 days. Thanks a lot West Valley Humane society for treating me so terrible!!!!

I found & adopted the companion of / no beyond my expectations. I took my time, went there a few days exploring the availability of certainty on Personalities of each dog I was interested in. Yes just as soon as a few connection's between pet, & myself. "dag-nab-it" they were adopted. Yes, this community is amazing to our "West Valley Humane Society" and for **Great** reason. The staff is always available to talk, explain, w/depth of knowledge, compassion, true Honest. The customer service is above exceptional. From many Volunteers, Veterinarian's, many other Field Specific, employees, a big shout out to all that, aided me in finding " my perfect" "best friend",. Who loves all, that I do, down to her favorite; to get in the vehicle run errands (sometimes just around the parking lot) but she's always proud to be by my side, as I am hers. P.s. she has never had an accident in my home. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dorene Nourse

150.00 and UP..is not a "fee" for adoption. You are selling dogs. Flat out. Ridiculous. We are looking for another dog and always try to go to shelters. However, thoae prices are extortionate. You are using them for your own financial gain. Period.

This place is very inefficient. There s huge lines and employees or volunteers just walking around not helping anyone. This one lady named Kayla was very rude and inconsiderate. We went there to meet and greet with my dog and she treated the dog we were meeting very poorly and cut the meet short. This lady ruined my view of this place and I don t think I ever want to come back if she is working!

The Humane Society out that they have there is very friendly for the most part. The girls at the front counter when you are adopting a dog don't really seem to care about much anything about chit-chatting among themselves. I asked for except for the office manager and it took her over 25 minutes to come speak to me. They need more friendly staff at the front counter.

Thank you so much for helping with our adoption of Cupid the husky mix puppy yesterday! He is amazing and very much loved!!! Our family including our Golden Retriever just adore him! Such a great personality.

I love the staff at West Valley Humane Society! I have adopted my last two bully breed rescue dogs from the shelter - both with significant medical complications which we worked together to treat and resolve. Both of my pups are now happy and healthy and have brought so much joy to our family!

Last month, I had a sick kitty that Dr. Talitha Neher helped me to care for. We were making great progress and were very hopeful and optimistic. Unfortunately, his heart was not strong enough to fully recover so Talitha and her staff lovingly helped me lay him to rest. His passing was peaceful and without any pain. I am grateful to have had their support during that difficult time.

Over a year ago, it was time for my best friend of 14 years, an American Bulldog named Buddy, to cross the rainbow bridge. I couldn t have imagined having anyone else but Talitha by my side; her care and compassion was my saving grace throughout it all and when the time was right, she was able to match me with our precious little pitty named Lilly.

Yesterday, I came home to Lilly crying and in pain. She had somehow ripped her toenail right off of the quick but was still hanging on enough to cause her an enormous amount of pain. This morning, I brought Lilly to Talitha and her clinic staff at WVHS. She was able to remove the nail with minimal pain to Lilly who came home a little dopey but happy. :)

I m also really excited to see the progress of the Community Cats program come together at WVHS! Having volunteered in rescue for years, I am all too familiar with the burden that stray cats have on the community and the shelter. More often than not, cats that are brought into the shelter are not reunited with their owners and a high percentage are euthanized due to poor social skills. It s a sad reality that I can imagine is hardest to bear for the clinic staff who are charged with their care and the difficult decision that they have to make when there simply isn t enough room or resources to care for them all.

I know that the Community Cats program is going to have a positive impact on the cats and families in our community and I m proud to support WVHS in their efforts!

Thank you to Dr. Talitha, her clinic staff, and all of the employees and volunteers at WVHS who keep showing up to advocate and care for our voiceless furry friends. Your efforts are invaluable. I am especially grateful to know Talitha and to call her a friend through our mutual love of animals; I don t know what I would do without her.

We adopted two new kitties from WVHS and have gone back for all the booster shots they need. They are sometimes crowded, and we have had to wait, but the price is right and we like supporting a local entity.

We took two dos that grew up together in. Their mom went into an assisted living. They promised to keep them together. We took in their bed and toys. They ended up seperatated! Toys taken away too!! So now they are alone and afraid and no loved one insight. You guys wonder why the one is acting up!? Wouldn't you? Or any kid?

I adopted a beautiful Mastiff puppy who had a slight respiratory infection. I was RUSHED through the process, about 5 minutes total after waiting a half an hour for them to find a person just to take the dog out to the play area. They are extremely unorganized and slow in every area, other than taking your money. It cost me $250 for the adoption fee and in 3 days another $400 in vet fees because they did not treat the "slight respiratory infection", which cultures showed to be a severe bacterial infection requiring a cocktail of IV antibiotics for 2 days, nor would they treat him despite him having the infection when I adopted him. You sign a form stating they are not responsible for any medical issues regardless of how or when they are contracted and they downplay any issue that may present at adoption. To top it all off, my beautiful Mastiff is actually a beautiful Boxer, a breed I did NOT want above most other large breeds because of their level of difficulty to train. I understand that it can be difficult to identify a mix breed and my own responsibility in that arena, but my overall experience with this shelter was very negative. I won't return here and there is a serious need for some restructuring.

Its a great place. Its clean, and the staff is very helpful. In the time I have lived here in Caldwell I have adopted three adorable, sweet dogs that all needed a forever home. Anytime I have had any questions the staff has been amazing. I'm so glad we have a place like this close by. If you are looking for a place to go to find your forever companion this is the place to go.

I got two of the best dogs in the world from here back in 2011. At adoption, the staff were able to give me personal information about my dogs history & personalities. Since adopting them, my Freya actually became my seizure dog (first through observation, but then got certified). My Ari is one of the sweetest dogs, too. When I moved across the USA years later, West Valley Humane Society was able to supply me with their medical records for their new vets when I misplaced it during the move. Although I have never worked/volunteered for West Valley Humane Society, I have worked for the ASPCA in NYC & two other small animal rescues; West Valley is definitely high up there in caring for animals & implementing exceptional service despite limited resources.

I mean, they do their job and they have the setup....

I mean, they do their job and they have the setup. But I feel very uncomfortable here. I also felt a little unimportant and dismissed by all the employees.

Especially how hard it was to check out an animal to adopt. I was looking at kittens and I had to wait in line to put the kitten back in her kennel so I was holding kittens in the lobby around all these other animals... when wanting to look at more than one animal this was a huge hassle and very irritating. I had to wait in line and then they would call the person up. It was a little weird that there wasn't just an employee hanging around the busy lobby to help people take animals in and out.

I feel like this place just does not have a lot of common sense. Maybe they just need more employees and better funding?

Checking out an animal was hardcore. I had to wait in line and bring their card to the front desk. But it was really difficult getting them checked back in. I even witnessed them let two women get their hopes up about two dogs that were already adopted. It just doesn't feel like these people really enjoy their job I guess.

I called to check in on my cat a couple days after, because apparently she was not speed already prior to adoption, which to me is a little unacceptable. they basically weren't sure if she was healthy at all and I won't even know until after they get all the tests done. just seems like they would spay her and give her all her vaccinations prior to adoption. I ended up paying $290 to adopt her and get her her shots and basic tests. and she will need even more shots after this because she's so young.

I called and was not even able to check up on my specific kitten. Said they are in surgery and I may or may not get a call later tonight, and then she hung up on me.

Now, what really is a little messed up is that after I spent a couple hundred dollars adopting the cat they told me that when they call me to say she's ready I have two days to pick her up or she goes back up for adoption. I imagine that is just standard policy and you can work around with it scheduling wise... But that seems a little ridiculous.

Overall, I'm excited to save my kitten from this place and never go back.

I absolutely love volunteering here. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They go above and beyond to find good homes for each animal.

I ve seen a lot of concerns in the comments here about the animals being too cold and on the concrete- I just wanted everyone to know that the floors are heated and the main source of heat for the room. So when it s cold the dogs lay on the warm ground- I promise they are nice and warm down there as I have sat on those floors myself!

There is a great group of volunteers and we try to get the dogs out as much as possible for potty breaks and social time. I really appreciate how dedicated everyone is to providing the best care to all of the animals.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is horrible. My family tried to adopt a kitten, they said we could have her in 2 weeks and go to see her she's ready 2 weeks early from being spayed with bloody urine that they wanted us to take care of and pay for tests to find out what it was because they won't take the initiative to take care of it themselves. What kind of animal shelter won't fix what was done in their own care? Really shows how much they care about the animals. Would not recommend doing business with them!!!

Used to be a great place to get a pet, Now it seems like all they care about is going home showed up and tried to get help viewing a kitten for our daughter, took 10 minutes before we were spoken too another 10 to see said kitten then were told that it was too late in the day to adopt. My child was crushed! The cat we wanted hadnt even been fixed yet. They complain about over crowding but sure didnt want to work 5 minutes past closing time. And maybe put up some signs or something to guide people on what to do if they want to see a pet. Kind of confusing if you've never been in there before.

One month ago I went to WVHS to meet a owner-surrendered APBT mix named Trinity that I was interested in adopting. While observing the dog in her kennel I noticed she was not bearing weight on her right hind leg, which I brought to the attention of the volunteers. I was told by both the volunteers and the front desk employees that the clinic would check her leg out later that afternoon and I could inquire the next day about her status. When I called the next afternoon, I told the woman who answered the phone that Trinity's profile was not on their website any longer and asked if she had been adopted. I was told she had been, and found it odd that anyone would adopt a dog with a serious leg injury plus that any shelter would adopt out a dog that was obviously injured. A few days later I mentioned this encounter I had with a volunteer from the Boise Bully Breed Rescue and she immediately contacted the rescue's adoption coordinator who found that Trinity had not been adopted out and was to be euthanized by the shelter instead. Luckily BBBR was able to put a hold on Trinity until the rescue was able to arrange a foster home and much needed medical care for her ruptured ligament. Trinity is presently recuperating after successful surgery on her leg and eventually will be adopted by some very lucky person or family. The paid employees of WVHS are not only unprofessional, but also unethical. I feel vindicated having been able to save this wonderful little dog's life even though I won't be adopting her as I found another one through BBBR. If I never set foot inside this shelter again, it will be too soon as their claim that they are a "no kill" shelter is bogus.
