The camera obscura is one of Edinburgh's most magical attractions. Eclectic and interesting, the museum is an opportunity to do something a bit different. Five floors of mind blowing optical illusions, mystical art and fun interactive stations. Very child friendly. Had a large gift shop on the ground floor.

I visited with my 26 year old daughter and we had a wonderful time. The camera obscura is fascinating in itself but the floors of exhibits and activities provided us with so much entertainment. The staff were friendly and helpful and Rosie, who demonstrated the camera obscura was very knowledgeable. A great place to visit.
This was so much fun. Andrew was our guide for the main camera at the top and he was enthusiastic and information. The views from the top were incredible. We spent about an hour wondering down through the rest of the attractions and every single floor was lots of fun. Plenty to play with and lots of photo opportunities. I'm glad we went on a snowy Tue in Feb as I'd imagine it wouldn't be as much fun when it gets too busy.
Really good place to visit. Took my kids through and they loved it. Over 6 floors with lots to see and the rooftop views on a nice day are stunning. Would highly recommend.
Well worth a visit. The coronavirus measures put in place were good, everyone had an entry time slot and there was a lot of hand sanitiser available. Unlike other attractions we have visited everything apart from the large camera at the top was open, luckily though we have seen this before so not being able to see it this time didn t detract too much from our visit.
Fun little attraction which plays on all type of optical illusions you might experience in life. Knowing generally how photography works, it was fun to see hands on interactive displays on how to trick your mind to believe something is bigger etc. You also get to see a big working Camera Obscura which is much better than the one I built by hand before. Spend around 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours based on how slow or fast you go.
Wow, this place was truly incredible. Was out in Edinbrugh for the day with my 4 year old and wanted something indoors to do and found this place on online. Located right next to the castle it was a lovel6 walk there. Inside each floor plan is truly amazing. Activities for all ages to be involved in. My little ones favorite had to be the spy cams which I couldn't believe how clear they actually are!! Was very clean and all staff were very helpful. Can't wait to visit again.
The Tickets cost lots, use a bus ticket to get a discount. If you head to the top floor there s a fun event with the actual camara obcura. 5 floors of strange illusions and tricks, as well as cameras you can operate. Very fun and good for all the family. Definitely recommend coming here
The camera obscura is just fantastic and our host did a great job explaining what you see and letting us have a great time. The illusions are fun and the artwork you can see is made by a lot of great artists like Esher for example. We were a group of adults and enjoyed it very much.
Fantastic place to visit, but be aware of the Mirrors Maize, if you re claustrophobic. I wouldn t advise going in, even if it s a short trail. The view from the top is spectacular and there are loads of interesting visual tricks to keep you intrigued.
Unbelievable, chaotic, fantastic, you become a child again!!! I explored everything! Don't loose the 10' starting "lesson" on 6th floor, before your explore on the other floors!
Fantastic location. Has 6 interesting floors of illusions and interesting optical tricks. The top floor has one of the best views of Edinburgh! Great as a photo spot.
Worth the money, it's really fun with my nephews, I would come back if we had a chance! I was here in Edinburgh for my sister's wedding and this was our best trip out
Loved it! My 2 year old had more fun than we did. The Camera Obacura itself was fine (our guide was very good), but the rest of the museum is what really shined!
Must see !! Staff are very very know a lot about Edinburgh. Special mention to Dan, thanks for the demonstration even though we missed your talk. Much appreciated.
Well worth the trip! Many interactive exhibits, interesting gift shop, entertaining and informative show. Highly recommend starting at the top of the building and working your way down. Even the toilets (which were very clean) have magic eye posters on the doors! Being able to pop in and out to fit in around other schedules was also a bonus. Get your stamp on your wrist or arm though, as the ink comes off very easily with water.
Brilliant fun! Great for all ages, and the Camera Obscura show in the roof was brilliant too, the lady who gave the show (I think her name was Marta) was hilarious and very informative about the city.
Brilliant fun for the family, very pleasant staff, I highly recommend. However, it got too crowded very quickly so I would recommend getting there as early as possible.
Just a few feet from the Edinburgh Castle, this was a great way to spend a couple of hours before walking down the Royal Mile. We enjoyed all of the attractions and found plenty of time to see everything before the camera obscura show at the top. Highly recommended for families, the rotating bridge and mirror maze were our favorites.
Easy to find and possibility to come go back later in the day if it's too much to do in one go. We took our time and enjoyed every minute! Great illusions and very interactive! Enjoyable by both kids and adults. Sublime view from the rooftop.
Me and my daughters aged 6 and 8 loved it here today. 6 floors takes the wind out of you, but the views of the castle and Edinburgh Town at the top are well worth it. Loads of fascinating interactive exhibitions. Throughly enjoyed.
This is really good but there are no facilities for wheelchair users or people with prams. We took our kids, we have a 16 month old and it was a nightmare keeping her under control, so it was a bit stressful. Having said that all 3 kids loved it.
Some of the stuff presented there is a bit dated, now that every smartphone can make crazy video effects and such. But the staff was extremely nice and there are a lot of amazing stuff that will make that visit unforgettable.
Went there 8 years ago just myself and my partner and loved it. So much fun especially on a cold or grey day. Now with our 2 year old just as much fun.
Hell yeah! Go to this, it's epic. Awesome for all ages. We are big kids (late 20s) and went for our valentines date. Had so much fun and it's was super interesting also. Staff appeared helpful, friendly, interested in their jobs and generally had positive vibes. We will return.
Fun place to visit. Interesting Victorian camera obscura which uses a periscope to send live pictures of Edinburgh to a viewing room. Our guide - Ting was entertaining. The remainder of the exhibition was modern 3D / moving images. Great for all ages.
Camera obscura is really good place, few things in that are unique.. So if you are visiting to edinburgh its good to visit this place.. Also its too close and reachable from edinburgh castle.. On the royal mile.. Worth spending money thr.. Best part is it is having full day ticket and unlimited access in that full day.. Good concept
Don't miss this! Educational but lots of fun and should keep all ages entertained (we certainly were). Lots to see and a great way to spend a few hours out of the rain if needed. We particularly loved the tunnel and mirror maze but the view is worth the admission price alone. Extra thanks to the staff for being so welcoming and friendly and setting up sensible and very precautious safety measures - we felt safe the whole time and had so much fun.
Absolutely fabulous. Seeing the camera obscura was very interesting and the illusions etc are amazing. The staff are really friendly, especially Jamie. Highly recommended.
Don't be put off by the price - this is an amazing experience over five floors, with musical stairs, holograms, optical illusions (one a tunnel that mimics movement so well, you nearly fall over!) and puzzles - all that before you even get to the actual camera obscura on the top floor, which is well over a hundred years old.
This attraction entertained four children aged 5-10 for a good hour and a half (we could have spent longer, but lunch beckoned), but it entertained the adults just as much! The giftshop has some nice stuff, too, not just tat.
It's worth booking a slot for the actual camera obscura because it gets very busy. It's also best to go on a sunny day, if you can, because the camera obscura is 'powered' entirely by daylight.
Be warned - while you walk up to the location, and queue to get in, visitors who are already inside will be spying on you! But you can get your own back on the next lot.
Great place to visit full of activities for the whole family, a must if you are visiting Edinburgh. Right by the castle so you can visit both popular attractions together.
Well worth the visit when in Edinburgh. Floors of amazing optical illusion and the Camera obscura at the top is great. You have great views overlooking the city as well on the roof. Its great for all ages too :)
