It's just a great pub with helpful friendly staff and a great range of beers and spirits of all varieties. They also do a mean burger!
Something a little different, a hidden gem in Edinburgh
A wonderful location. Really cozy and stylish. Here you will find good Scottish food and a good selection of seafood and a variety of beers. Exceptional is the huge selection of malt whiskeys.
Traditional Scottish pub in the heart of town. Off the main street so not a huge amount of foot traffic.
Multiple reasons including quality beer, ambiance, good memories (having had wedding reception in the restaurant area in 2007), location, tradition etc
Fast service and an excellent crab fettucine on this visit
Beatiful Edinburgh New Town pub, with tiled mural walls, a big horseshoe bar, famous for its seafood pub food.
Got a Groupon for tea time, and despite the food being good, horrendous service, waited and waited for 1 hr to be served, barely any apologies, both waitresses rude the entire time! Ok...waste of time and money.
Great traditional setting with excellent seafood and wonderful ambience.
Edinburgh's oldest Oyster bar featuring an on site restaurant focused on seafood and excellent wine pairings ( including dessert wine). The pub also features some of the most excellent architecture, with Royal Doulton panels, high decorative ceilings and ornamental features throughout the bar.
Amazing bar with stunning interior. A great place off the beaten track. Stylish and tastefull without being expensive. Can get a bit crowded.
An Edinburgh classic. Great selection of beers coupled with decadent surroundings. Warm and friendly.
Good meal in an exceptional setting while moldings and wooden panels and the most is the pub in the same discovery pure juice
Nice traditional pub with good selection of beers, whiskys & food with restaurant.
Popped in here for a quick drink on the way back to our hotel. Great atmosphere and very old school interior. Felt like l was stepping back into the roaring twenties.
A traditional, good looking old bar with an ornate ceiling and carved, wooden, well-stocked bar selection. Here there's no music, allowing you to hear that beautiful burble of conversation and the odd cutlery ting. It's warm, cosy, and feels a bit like stepping out of everyday life. It can be a little difficult to find a seat, though.
Very swanky, large selection of tasty alcoholic beverages
Such a special place with a unique, elegant, cozy environment where you can spend hours just enjoying the surroundings and get yourself lost in the whisky menu
An Edinburgh institution. Fantastic ceramics surrounding an epic island bar with lovely benched booths and lectern tables around the walls. Very trendy these days, maybe lost its way (for me) in the last decade? Too many bar staff seeking to make their service an experience? For whom? What happened to the lunchtime carvery?
Quint little pub in a fabulous little corner in Edinburgh! Fabulous drinks and oysters!!
Enjoyed our dinner here. Staff friendly. Area currently under construction. Don't let that stop you.
A really pretty bar with friendly staff and away from the more tourist places, generally pop in here before getting a train.
Traditional pub in city centre serving good selection of beers, also bar food available. Restaurant upstairs.
Recently refurbished, efficient and friendly bar staff
Edinburgh's oldest Oyster bar featuring an on site restaurant focused on seafood and excellent wine pairings ( including dessert wine). The pub also features some of the most excellent architecture, with Royal Doulton panels, high decorative ceilings and ornamental features throughout the bar.
Fundimentally I don't dislike the Cafe Royal. The interior is fabulous and I have enjoyed many visits when meeting friends.
The reason for the two stars is based on the state of the food I ordered. I had mussels and quite frankly I believe they were the worst I have ever been served. They were dry and overcooked. Although I ordered a small portion it certainly lived up to the description "small" in portion and size of mussels. On complaint they were taken away and "replaced" there was little difference. The waiter said he'd inform the chef and that was that!
On a final note the clock at the bar was 10/ 15 mins slow why when many customers glance at that clock to go and get trains or buses. It should be 5 mins fast!!
Very nice discovery, friendly and helpful staff. Many choices in whiskey, beer and wine, and excellent soup of the day. Decorations of another century, we just loved the atmosphere!
Manager one of the best staff very very nice and eager to help cannot fault the food 5 stars
Food is just average, the waiting time was long as there were only 2 staffs working during my visit.
Superb seafood platter and the kitchen was happy to make garlic free on request for one of our party.
This hotel is located on Regent Street, close to Piccadilly Theaters and about 4 blocks from Liberty Department Store, making it a great location for shopping and sightseeing.
The disadvantage is that the price is high and the lobby is small, but the staff are friendly and proactive, providing high satisfaction.
In the case of a suite room, the floor of the bathroom is like an ondol, so you can avoid the cold after shower, and it is finished with luxurious marble.
The bed is not bad, but it's not a very comfortable bed, and the pillow is a bit low, but you can also adjust the height by providing two lumps.
Unlike the exterior, the rooms are very modern and have a swimming pool, so you can swim with your swimsuit (no rental). If you don't have a swimsuit, you can buy a swimsuit store across the street from the hotel. You can also buy fruit or buy daily necessities.
It's a great place for people watching. In a way, it has a similar vibe to the Crown Bar, in Belfast - which is now owned by the National Trust - but a great bar, so different from those around it!
Good pub in the centre, interesting decor and surroundings.
Lovely food , let down by apathetic bar staff and customers having to fight amongst themselves to get a table.
Beautiful place and food very good. A bit frustrated by the slow service and the one way system that a lot of people just ignored. Still one of my favourite places though. 4.5 stars really!
Fantastic pub with unbeatable decor, good beer selection and great food
Bar service often poor in busy periods. Bar staff also appear to serve food. This seems not to work well
Beautiful bar, nice atmosphere. Not the cheapest but paying for the loaction
Fun pub as always but a serious look at ladies toilets needed. 2 out of 3 not working. Would have been a nightmare if really busy
Great location, good food and definitely worth the money. Definitely reserve!
Cafe Royal is what it is - an Edinburgh institution. The decor is breathtaking, the sense of history never fails to excite no matter how often you visit and the sheer oozing of class which always prevails is wonderful. The food is superb - oysters a speciality - and the range of drinks and prices great. You can't say you've done the Edinburgh pubs unless you've been to the Cafe. 10/10!
Of those that are known and listed in the guides, this is the best pub in Edinburgh. Classic, rowdy and warm. It has a kind of annex restaurant (oyster bar) with romantic bars. What is best is to stay in the pub and drink pints of Innis & Gunn.
An excellent bar where you can relax and enjoy a beer or a wine with a snack, or eat a meal in the restaurant.
Great oysters from Edinburgh oldest oyster pub. Slightly off the beaten path and a great place to meet the locals.
Always a great bar to have a post funeral drink with family, love this bar
Always good clientele, good service and tasty food, a proper bar, just go.
Stunning pub. Is very busy at weekends though and not a huge amount of seating. It is worth the wait.
More than pleased! We were told to try this place but we didn't set high expectations. Nice selection of drinks, food was really good, but had a few exceptional surprises, and we discovered a new favorite whiskey. Win!
Stunning interior. Nice staff. Interesting characters as clientele.
Really nice place but that's not enough for more stars. Starters were OK, however burgers well below par. Cold, falling apart buns, 'locally sourced best beef' only served well done due to pub policy . Greens and toppings on it nearly non existing. I think you can do better.
Beautiful place. Attentive staff who are well informed on all things pub and also where next related. However you may need to sell your first born to get a round in. A bit, er, prestigious shall we say, in the till department.
A classic Edinburgh bar. Superb location and atmosphere. This bar will still be here in one thousand years and will look just like this.
Excellent food, great service. Good atmosphere! Would go again, any time.
Great pub, nice selection of beers and friendly staff.
Fantastic place. A real institution of Edinburgh. Always good service and a great atmosphere
Walked in after a local friend recommended the bar if we were looking for a nice place to just have a beer,. She already warned us that the food is quite expensive so we didn't even look at the menu. We looked for a beer. and got a beer. The ambiance was very nice, the old pub vibe just perfect as the interior of this place is filled with nice seats, a beautiful bar, but also surrounded by very large windows making sure it doesn't feel "too dark" inside. A clean establishment as well. It was a bit hard to find as to road works just outside, but I assume that they can't do anything about that and aren't too happy with those either.
Our beer was served cold and the glasses (filled at the tap) were about as full as they could get without spilling. So you really have the feeling you get your money's worth. The staff was friendly and quick although we didn't see much of them as we were sitting in quite a far corner.
Spectacular round bar, excellent beer and wine selection with the added attraction of a sea food / oyster bar as part of one of the most iconic bars in Edinburgh, must be enjoyed as any part of a trip to Edinburgh
Iconic place in Edinburgh. Great food and service. Not cheap but the prices are reasonable.
Great atmosphere, loads of history with a great selection of well conditioned beer and wonderful whisky.
