Extraordinary place, something you have to visit in Edinburgh. Always full, price are e little bit higher, but is worth it...
Best steak pie in the world.
Triple chips are a must.
Beers are good also.
A hidden gem of a bar.
Great bar, great food. Historic charm with a nice energy about it.
Brilliant find. Gd
Good food and drink at a good price.
Enjoyed live music at the pub in the evening. We had to leave at about 11 pm to catch our train back to London the next morning but they go on till 2. The people in the pub seemed to all know each other and were also very warm and welcoming of the tourists. Had some great conversations in the background of Scottish music - which the singer (Ciaran McGhee) was kind enough to translate for our benefit.
A lovely way to spend an evening.
Proper pub hidden behind the East end of princes st. Cask ales available. Serves food too, although I didn't eat here.
Excellent food, atmosphere and service. Special whiskies.... A bit pricey though but worth it if you're looking for a place for a special occasion or a real treat.
Entrancing decor and a nice pub but the stools are far too high for normal people to sit on when the booths are full!
Highly recommended! A wee bit more expensive to do it's location and popularity
It's a gorgeous building, and a historic one to boot, and yes, their oysters are top notch, but unfortunately it just gets far too busy, particularly during the festival. If you're looking for a place to sit, move on. If you're happy shucking half a dozen amazing oysters at the bar whilst people bump past you, then knock yourself out.
Always great food and drinks in fabulous surroundings.
Reasonably priced and easily some of the best food I've ever had. Their venison is amazing and I'm salivating thinking of it even weeks later. The decor is also all original and stunning with huge painted tile work, plasters, and stained glass.
Very nice pub, large choice of beers, friendly staff
Staying here is a real highlight! Our group of 10 doctors and pharmacists was welcomed in a unique atmosphere by the restaurant manager and then served by the very friendly staff a la carte with wonderful seafood and More
Late lunch early dinner of beet pot pie hit the spot.
We thought it is our best pub in Edinburgh. Love it.
One of Edinburgh's most interesting and grand old public houses, with a fine selection of beers, and excellent food from the adjoining restaurant specialising in sea food. Often crowded out during the tourist hell season.
Fantastic pub, great real ales, shame about the high prices.
Classic Edinburgh bar with a great interior. Close to the station. Even if you don't drink go have a go and enjoy the atmosphere.
Lovely old fashioned bar with a great atmosphere. I've eaten lunch in the bar and it was delicious! Central location and good value.
Had lunch and dinner there, the place was very pleasant, food was good. The waiter was very good to us. We order a potato mash, steak and oyster and it was pretty good campare to the price.
Spent a wonderful afternoon in this beautiful atmospheric restsaurant / bar ,,staff a credit to yourselves ,,the haddock and chips ,wine and whisky were delicious ,merry christmas to you all
Unimpressed, food was not of the quality expected for this restaurant, will not be going again. Attitude also a disgrace.
Food was good but service frustratingly slow. Also we were given choice of 6.15 or 9.15 when throughout our time there, from 6.15pm, there were empty tables. Wouldn't hurry back.
The interior here is spectacular, it's worth a visit to absorb the surrounds alone! The bar also has a full selection and food on offer.
Great food and drinks. Had to wait for a table on the bar side as it was busy, but didn't have to wait too long. Glad we found this place away from the tourist heavy area.
Very nice and calm bar with an excellent location travelling true waverley station
Excellent pub. Lovely ornate interior. Fantastic food, great beer and brilliant staff. Highly recommended.
Great traditional pub with awesome Scottish food to match. Staff always seem helpful and cheery. Definitely worth a visit.
Love the ambience and the great food. Its not too far to walk from Waverly Station too. Adequate choice of lunch menu to choose from. Good service from the only waitress around!
An authentic Old Town pub. Always busy, the drinks and historic tiles a draw for locals and visitors.
Truly brilliant establishment this and has been a favourite of mine for over 30 years. Very well located just off the east end of Princes Street and close to Waverley Station so getting home shouldn't be a problem The old pub had a decorous More
Been popping in here for over 20 years, and hopefully for the next 40.
As a traveler with a limited budget, this place is lovely place to enjoy pure Scottish cuisines such as west cost Scottish oysters and Scotch salmon with a reasonable price! .
A wonderful location. Really cozy and stylish. Here you will find good Scottish food and a good selection of seafood and a variety of beers. Exceptional is the huge selection of malt whiskeys.
Beautiful classical oyster bar interior. Good range of drinks and food. Welcoming staff.
Had a thoroughly wonderful afternoon with friends in this historic atmospheric bar. They have good covid system in operation so it feels safe and still enjoyable. Staff were helpful, informative and made you fee relaxed. Thank you
Good pub. They really need more staff as it is very busy Friday night.
Enjoyed my visit nice beers in very nice surroundings
Nice service with really good food. Nice relaxed atmosphere and you can talk to each other. Cozy old premises in brown and tradition. Fair prices that make you appreciate everything more.
Went with family, we were all impressed with the level of service and quality of food and drinks. the decor and atmosphere here are spectacular.
Too busy, can't help that. Only one of four real ale pumps working. Toilets, not good...
VERY busy pub in the city centre OK for a quick drink .
Still a very good selection of beers which are well kept. Service was a little slow which was unusual as it's normally spot on. It was mid afternoon when perhaps a little short staffed and things did improve later on.
Great service and nice bottle of wine for the rugby
Beautiful surroundings, we enjoyed a great lunch in the restaurant and, yes it was expensive, but it was delicious and well presented. Recommended.
Cafe royale has been around for a long time. It just goes to show that despite many pub closing over the years a well run traditional pub can go on and on. I've been visiting it for over 40 years. A jewel of a pub. Never eaten there but I believe the food is great
First thing you see when you come in the East door is a sign saying "No service" - people come in and walk out.
What they should have is a sign saying Welcome - this way for service areas . I suggested that to a staff member - not interested.
One of the best pubs in Edinburgh despite this uninspiring notice.
Ok but a bit more expensive than other equivalent bars
Great vibe. Excellent Cullen skunk and fish and chips
Wonderful ceramic tiles on walls - a truly trad pub and worth a visit for history and atmosphere
Very traditional bar just off Princes Street. Will be busy at peak hours (lunchtime and early evening). If you want to see and appreciate the decor and murals, call in mid-afternoon when it wil be quieter.
Handy location... almost hidden at the end of Princes St. Nice selection of drinks and friendly service.
Love the atmosphere but sadly some of the food a bit disappointing. Oysters were very small with almost no eating in them. Lobster was tiny and way overpriced. Service good.
I can only say: go there and order the seafood platter
Just sitting here and having a drink is enough. You go back in time and feel a little better about yourself. Absolutely glorious place. If you want to eat in the Oyster bar, which I recommend, book a table.
It was very busy only seat were on high chairs. Toilet were down lot stairs not good if you problem with stairs
Great central location and good selection of drinks.
Decent pub. Serves a range of food. Pretty popular.
One of the most beautiful pubs in Edinburgh. Make sure you look at all of the tiles on the walls!
Loved this place and can wait to go again and try the restaurant. Deco is amazing.
Great beer and excellent food.....that was last year!!!! This year food in the restaurant poor. Service poor too. My starter was cold. Table for four...we all had a complaint....Manager was rude when we brought to his attention....he implied we weren't telling the truth when we said last year the place was superb and had now lost the plot and was not up to scratch...what has happened? Cafe Royal we wont be coming again!! Ladies loos flooded too!!!!
My favourite Edinburgh bar. Great drink & superb seafood.
