Super nice pub with a good ale selection and a lot of Whiskey
Nice selection of ales both local and from further afield. Knowledgeable and attentive staff. Can be noisy because of all the hard surfaces. Usually busy.
Super nice super breakfast, nice waitress and speaks French.
Love this place, lovely relaxing atmosphere, beautiful decor and bar staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Always come here when visiting Edinburgh.
I have been coming here since I was a student (..perhaps it is best not to disclose just how long ago that was) and I still love the place. Beautiful surroundings and excellent service.
A great Victorian bar that feels like you're stepping back in time.
Been here many times. Always good service. So happy with it I've just arranged a meetup group for there on Fridays :-)
I love this busyness all the time, good wine, if you want to feel yourself alive just go to visit that place!
Well located traditional pub. Lively in the evenings, mostly with vertical drinkers. Great period interiors.
Must visit when in Edinburgh. A bar like no other. Great for a drink but even better for a meal. Love the place
Beautifully decorated pub and restaurant in the middle of Edinburgh - I recently had a family reunion there. Unfortunately the pub has a no under 18s in the bar and under 16s in the restaurant policy of which no one told us until we had purchase drinks. There was also a major cockup with the food but eventually had a nice meal.
This was the best restaurant I visited when I was in Edinburgh for a week on business. I saved it for my birthday. The food was very good albeit slightly pricey. The interior decor was astonishing and worth paying extra to dine in true Victorian magnificence.
The interior here is spectacular, it's worth a visit to absorb the surrounds alone! The bar also has a full selection and food on offer.
If you're in Edinburgh, be sure to visit here. Stunning Victorian architecture, Doulton wall tiles, great atmosphere, superb selection of beers, you won't be disappointed.
We had a nice meal in the restaurant. The bar is beautiful but very loud on a Saturday night.
Nicely decorated authentic pub in a tucked away location
Good evening.
My wife and I ate 12 oysters and Steak and Lobster today. It was very fresh and very taste. All staff were so kind. The shop were so safe and secure. We will come back again soon. Thank you!
Great atmosphere. Beautiful ceramics on the walls depicting important historical discoveries. Wide selection of beers and ales. Excellent service.
A very safe pub with an excellent restaurant.
Would highly recommend.
Very welcoming place for young and old.
Love food, love drink, love atmosphere, my table too much corner but warm at the end as it near heater, at first staff not so nice as I come alone and may not look rich and may spend not much money but at the end staff nice to me but when I tips I heard some comment with other staff not sure is it about me or not. But love food very much indeed.
Fantastic Sea Bass risotto!
Has clams, mussels and salmon in the risotto, eat at bar and service was great!
On a Friday night it's very loud and the music makes any conversation difficult.
Absolutely Gorgeous place. Slightly more expensive than your local but really nice place
Taste their Scottish specialties and whiskeys in a typical atmosphere
Attractive old style pub, but staff should really tell the US visitors that they don't have to queue to be taken to a seat!
Fantastic old Edinburgh bar friendly staff, great selection of whisky and real ales..braw
Hidden away to the east end of princess street. As soon as you enter you can t but appreciate the amazing interiors which transport you back to the Victorian era!
Has an Oyster Bar which I believe is famous. I did not have food here... just drinks, which they have a very good choice
Quaint old bar with an oval serving area.
Range of beers was adequate but nothing special.
We managed to get a table on two occasions (drinks only) without having to book. The service was second to none and the staff were really friendly.
One of the best places for a pint in the heart of Edinburgh. The interior is a work of art.
Great pub, incredible decor, good food, good service.
Great place for a pint after work always a great atmosphere
Very nice place to go for a drink, serves food as well, with a fantastic interior, checkout the seperate dining/bar room.
A bit expensive with minimal spend per person and charges for sharing:(
Very good food great value on early bird deal but staff didn't know about the deal which was advertised on the net and on back of ladies toilet door. Food was excellent and staff were very helpful.
A good night had by all. Toilets need more cleaning and bottles moving for dusting, spring clean!!!
Good beer goof and service. Beautiful surroundings.
We loved it and enjoyed every minute. Very friendly staff and great food
Very good place, very traditional and cozy. The bar tender Irish a genius. All very kind. Rich and well presented food.
The beer is not cold.
Fantastic ornate Victorian gin palace behind Princes Street. Pricey food.
A fine place for a beer and a bite. Steak sandwich spot on
Coffee served in what i can only assume was a dirty cup, as had sugar in it. very disappointed.
Great interior, outstanding staff and friendly atmosphere
Stunning place with that many whiskies to choose between. Oyster Rockefeller were to die for.
This is a beautifully ornate tiled bar and adjacent restaurant without the pretentious you might expect from somewhere so grand. The bar serves a great selection of beers, wines and whiskies amongst the more usual choices and the bar food is excellent. Take a booth or a high table or sit at the bar and join in with locals, businessmen and tourists alike.
Great place. Quite fancy for my taste but, great service (Our waiter was Bruno, I think was very professional), delicious traditional Scottish sea food... Definitely worth a visit
Beautifully appointed restaurant with imaginative dishes.
One of my favourite pubs in Edinburgh, don't miss the tile artwork, along with the good beer and selection of whisky.
Stopped by here for a late-night drink after a tour of the Scotch Whiskey Experience. The waiter recommended some single-malt scotch for us to try and we had a wonderful time.
Excellent classic boozer - brill service, wide range of beers and unusual preserved interior. Well worth a visit.
Art Deco charm, lobster tank, and not the crowd you would expect, really mixed and friendly place
We popped in to the Cafe Royal after a long day of seeing Edinburgh and enjoyed the beautiful bar, delicious oysters, the perfect Bloody Mary and wonderful service!
Went to Edinburgh to celebrate 3 friends 60th birthday.
I asked for it to be cooked so that it was pink inside and not bleeding on to my plate. when my plate arrived my steak was twice the size of my friends but hers was perfect, mine was over cooked tough as leather and full of veins It was disgusting .
The young girl collected the plates and asked if everyone enjoyed their meals which they all replied yes thank you I told her mine was disgusting overcooked and full of veins I said it was the worst steak I have ever had she laughed at first thinking I was joking but then realised that I was not.
I would not of served this to a dog never mind a paying customer.
I did pay for my meal but will never go there again. Irene Thompson
The very best food and staff.
10 from 10.
Busy pub. Great atmosphere. Toilet facilities poor.
Food was very disappointing. Chips weren't cooked and burger was soggy
Great place for a beer a coffee or lunch. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff
Something a little different, a hidden gem in Edinburgh
Love this place. Good food and beer selection in a Victorian pub. Had the Sunday roast- delicious!
Traditional surroundings, superb menu, service second to none, and the Oysters!
What an experience. Go, and enjoy. Can't imagine anyone being disappointed.
Stunning stunning , part of the rugby weekend, on every visit.
