I went to Breed's looking for a couple of sizes of A/C filters Breed's had one but not the other, an 18x30. I wanted 2 replacement 3 way lamp sockets. That part of the electrical section has not seen any housekeeping for a long time. After piling through everything in the area I found one in an open package. That whole section is a mess and poorly stocked. I wanted a couple of F40T12/CW bulbs. I found one in a 2-pack that had been opened and somebody took one and left the other. In addition in that section there were 4 used fluorescent bulbs, blackened ends and all. Again, terrible housekeeping! Who lets used bulbs sit on their shelves? I also wanted a nylon US flag. A very nice man helped me find them. I told him about the electrical section and his answer was that was going to be reset at some point in time. Come on Breed's! What about today? Their chocolate candy section does look very nice though if you are in to that sort of thing in a hardware store. For me I prefer to have a hardware store that keeps up on hardware items so that I can finish my projects.

BREED
Good thing Breed exists--I'd never find the stuff I need for my home. Home Depot is a nightmare but sometimes you need a little neighborhood place with real employees on the floor like Breed.
Nice little neighborhood hardware store. It's got all the tools/parts/equipment you could want and a helpful staff
If you need it, they've got it. From quality housewares to hardware and a staff that's very knowledgeable.
Austin native here. Been frequenting Breed since I was 3 years old and they have helped me with SO many home improvement projects over the years and I have bought an insane number of cards, chocolates, Christmas/birthday presents here. Nothing but good experiences!
Garden section is lacking..and $$$ is right. But those who live in this area probably don't bat an eye at that. Just not for me..
Fine crystal stemware, linens, chocolates, children's games, and more are displayed just aisles away from hardware items such as silver polish, Formula 409 cleaner, mops, brooms, and plants to name just a few. Friendly service and guess what: 50% off on many items today! (June 2018) Stop in and grab a coffee sample or bottled drink and brouse, brouse, brouse!
Great local hardware store with a lot more than your typical local hardware store! The selection is very good and the staff is very knowledgeable helpful, always eagerly offering their help. My general impression is that it's a little bit more expensive than Home Depot, but definitely this is a good option for the area and also if you're looking for good service.
Always helpful and it is surprising how many items they carry. The people in the hardware department are way more knowledgeable and helpful than what you'll find in a big box store. They are also very competitive with their prices. Come here first, you won't be let down.
You can get metric stainless fasteners AND delicious bon-bons in ONE location. Plus great service.
I went in today to find some obscure finishing tacks, and not only did they have a large selection of them, but Robin in the hardware department spent lots of time with me, advising me on what might be the best choice for the job, (I was making an oil painting panel.) She even offered advice on creating painting panels because she used to work in an art supply shop! Only spent $2 and I was treated with incredible kindness and care by Robin and everyone else that works there. That's the way it should be in every store, but these days it's not often you receive this level of care in a shopping situation. I SO appreciate this store, and especially the amazing people that work there! Thank you Breed and Co! :)
Quaint hardware store, refreshing from the larger corporate depot or Lowes.
Quite expensive and you need to jump through hoops for the student discount
This is kind of random but whenever I need spare keys cut, I go here. They are so reliable, I never have to worry about getting a key that's too sloppily cut to work in the lock. And they have the nicest, most knowledgeable employees!
For a place that is not too large, they always seem to have the tool/fitting that I need.
This is only the second or third time that I have given a 5 star rating. Breed & Company deserves it without a doubt. The staff is extremely competent and knowledgeable and the customer service is exceptional. About 95% of the time the price is almost the same as the big box stores, so price is not really a factor.
Hardware store plus gift store All of it is WONDERFUL
After going to home Depot Lowe's I got the answers I needed from from this amazing place from people that really care I will continue to go and do more shopping there!
a good hardware store in the neighborhood for those things you need to run out and get when doing housework.
They may be a bit pricier than Home Depot it Lowe's but if you need a hard to find part to fix or make something, the employees know there sh## and will help you. They have way more stock of items than the big box stores
this store is packed, something in every nook and cranny. the gift side is a little hoighty toighty but has a nice selection - the hardware store side is awesome and the staff on that side really knows their stuff and goes out of the way to help.
Great little place to find odd and end for your home. Very friendly place to
This is the 2nd best place in Austin to find odd nuts (fasteners, that is).
My favorite hardware and gift shop in Austin Texas. It truly is a part of Old Austin heritage.
I love this place for various reasons. The selection of merchandise in this store is astounding. The employees are always helpful and know where to find what you are looking for. They are also so customer friendly here.
The best prices in town. Great service. Extremely knowledgeable and a wide variety of supplies. Now go load your vehicle up and get some work done!
Great little one-of-a-kind spot. Attentive employees and more knowledge than you get at the big box stores. At the same time there are space limitations and its not necessarily the place you go when you're about to remodel the back half. However they do have one feature that no one else has, AKA they paint match exactly. When you get paid here and you ask for a match it actually matches. No one else in town can do this as far as I know.
Super hardware store, also great things for the girls
Close by and has everything I need for home repair and replacement needs.
The managers there are so rude. Do not waste your time. Go to Neiman Marcus or Home Depot. I
This place has the best assortment of fittings, bolts and misc items. I needed a moon key for an small engine and they had it. Great place. FREE coffee gotta love that
They have the best sun glasses and un prescribed glasses
Lots of company to help you find what your looking for!
Because of this place, I am totally unable to say that I hate hardware stores
There is nothing quite like visiting a local hardware store. Most the people that work at Breeds will go out of their way to help or share personal experience on the problem you are trying to resolve. The guys in the hardware area actually build stuff. I always look for Phil. He's my go to guy to get things done. They'll even let you use their workspace in the back if you need to get out of a jam. The big box stores might save you a few bucks but in my opinion it's not always worth it.
keep it local and keep it austin by heading over to breed and co. for those hardware needs. traditionally a hardware shop, they now offer a great selection of dinnerware and kitchenware. several times i have found what i am looking for at a better price than those conglomerates home depot and lowe's.
Nice quality hardware and home plant items here at Breed & Company 29th Street location at the residential area vicinity of UT Campus. The counter staff and hardware tech assistants are genuinely helpful.
Great place the staff is very helpful and the place is well stocked
I love that Breed and Co is close to my house, very convenient. They always have quality products and decent pricing. It is a bit crowded at the Westlake store, but not too bad. If you are looking for a nice gift, this is the place to go. I always go after any holiday as they have their holiday items on sale with great discounts. Occasionally I run into a snobby salesperson/cashier, but for the most part they are very helpful and friendly.
I love Breed. Amazig, helpful, knowledgeable staff.
Not as well kept as when the original owners had it...Plants in garden dying.
Very friendly service. They are helpful & well organized. Also much smaller that the big boss stores which means less time getting lost. Or looking for help they're just right at the counter
Old school hardware store, You will be greeted when you walked in, and an employee will always ask you if you need help finding anything to complete your project. I can only wish major department stores (cough, home depot) were as friendly and helpful. Thanks guys!!
We had a horrible customer service experience like many others have mentioned. The store is great but the customer service is terrible. Ours is specifically with the employee Eduardo. We asked him how his day was at check out and he went on a long talk about how horrible working retail in the holidays is. I was purchasing six mugs that were wrapped up for me and I asked to look at one of the mugs to make sure they were the ones I wanted and he gave me serious attitude. It was a gift and I wanted to make sure it was right. I then wanted to buy a Fir dish soap which he told me was not on holiday discount (I had been in the store 2 days prior and was given the holiday discount on the exact same item without even asking). When we had purchased all of our items we said when we were here 2 days ago they gave us a student discount...can we use it again? my husband showed his ID which is for MIT and we were told sorry it s only for UT students. I have never seen a student discount specific to one school?? He said I ll be sure to tell my manager that this does not count He was just so rude and condescending. It s unfortunate so many people have issues with the employees because it is a nice store. I have never been treated so poorly by an employee as Eduardo treated us today.
Very convenient downtown Hyde Park area. They got what you're looking for. Very helpful staff.
We love going here! The mixture of hardware items, upscale and unique household, kitchen, and dining items is always a treat.
nothing like a good ole school hardware store. i don't mind that the display isn't all big box, it def reminds me of the old store my dad took me to growing up. i highly recommend this place for most anything you need if you're in the area
a hardware store that has what you want, an austin tradition
Went into Breed & Company today to get a key made (3 copies of the same key), traffic was heavy and it took me 25 minutes to get there and 25 minutes to get back. I had the keys made and paid $2.49 + tax for each of the three keys. However, when I got home the keys didn't work, they didn't even fit into the lock which means that they used the wrong blank. I called Breed & Company to tell them that the keys didn't work and ask for a credit to my credit card as I didn't want to drive another 50 minutes for $7.50 plus tax. I talked to two employees at Breed & Company including the manager and they refused to give me a credit unless I drove another 50 minutes... I assume that customer acquisition in the hardware business is more than $7.50, in this case they lost a good customer for $7.50 and it was their mistake in the first place. They were not the helpful hardware people!!
Great place for customer's and a fantastic place to work!
Breed and Co is a small town hardware store located in a large city. They have just about everything you can imagine from hardware to kitchenware to plants. All the staff is really nice and very helpful. I recommend going here over Home Depot any day!
My all time favorite hardware store in TX SOMA area. They have every little gizmo and gadget the happy home invariably needs!
Still best of the best! Selection and employees are beyond expectations.
Great store, wonderful variety of products, and friendly staff. Fun to browse and shop.
These guys can fix anything..old school hardware store..better than you tube video
An associate followed us around and repeatedly asked if we needed help in a manner that suggested we were going to steal something. She also watched and stared at us throughout our visit. The store was awesome though.
Horrible! Website said they had terrace board in stock, and didn't. Asked sales clerk and she was rude and unhelpful. Said I have to order, she could not. Drove 30 minutes to this store for this. I won't ever go there again. This place sucks.
Grest neighborhood hardware store. Conveniently located and always has what I need in stock.
Best. Hardware Store. Ever! I love this place. When you enter, the left is the hardware, and right is home goods. I can bring my sweetheart here, and she can go right, I'll go left. We both meet at the register, and our home is improved!! They carry mostly everything you could want. And if they don't have it, they know where to get it. Super awesome service. Great selection. This is my go-to hardware store.
Expensive, but the only place in the area with odd repair items.
It was a nice hardware store new owners new changes hard to get used to
Went in there today to buy some plants and when I finally got somebody to help me oh well you re gonna have to wait until tomorrow because we are pricing today couldn t give me a price right then I guess they didn t want their money it was too much of a problem because there was only 10 people in the store never going there again I m much better plants anywhere else anyway
Been looking for one of these little guys everywhere! I m an Arborist with Austin Metro Tree & Landscape and this is a diameter tape. It measures a tree across by wrapping around. It already has the math formula worked into the numbers and it makes the job way easier! Thanks Breed & Co!
this store is like a smor-gish-board of awesome stuff. they have garden stuff to specialty fudge. come here if you want to kill sometime and you're tired of fighting the crowds at whole foods.
Quaint old fashion hardware store with friendly helpful staff. It was my first time shopping there but I can't wait to visit again and check out the other half of the store.
This is such a great place... workers go out of their way to help you in the store.. and always so clean
They didn't have what I needed, but the Salesman was willing to discuss alternatives to the tool I needed and referred me to another store. Very helpful!
the only reason i shopped her was for a wedding i was attending. the products are amazing, but i could probably only afford to shop here once in a lifetime unless i win the lottery.
Great old skool hardware store with bearings and every tool imaginable
Excellent service! Key station can make a duplicate automobile chip key! Helpful recommendations and have always found what I needed.
In and out in a jiffy! What you need at a great price and tons of other things that you didn't know that you needed.
The only hardware store you need. Beats Liwes and Home Depot easily. Has complete line of nuts and bolts sold individually....even stainless steel. They never fail to have a part for me. Plumbing, electrical, home hobby stuff, building supplies....on and on.
This is the nicest ace hardware I've ever been in. Slightly overwhelming.
I love this place. it's like a boutique hardware/general store with anything you could want. The folks who work here are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I especially love coming here for seasonal items like grill accessories and holiday decorations.
A great source for parts and materials for household repairs and projects.
Breed is both a great small hardware store and home goods store. They have a surprising large selection stuffed into the store and a helpful staff. I've gone here for random hardware supply like electrical cord, nuts, bolts, and the like but they also have services like key duplication. I even got a $20 duplicate for a chipped Honda Accord key that would have cost $100 at the dealership. Breed also has a weekly knife sharpening service - I couldn't believe what an improvement a sharpening was for my kitchen knives and a lot cheaper than buying new knives! There's a bunch of other home goods here that I haven't really even explored but I would check here first before heading out on the highway.
