We went on a Monday morning. Several things were closed,: giraffe feedings, slide, ice cream/treat food stand. This was a bit of a bummer, but it did feel like we had most of the zoo to ourselves. The facilities were nice and clean.

Great place to take the family. Although a little pricey, there is much to see and do. Our little girl really enjoys the splash pad and rock slide. Our son enjoys all the animals and the tube slide. The staff is always very helpful and friendly. We have visited numerous times and it's been great every time. Considering the year pass.

Amazing place with lots of beautiful animals and exhibits! I highly recommend taking your kids here or even just yourself. I've been going here for years and it's well worth the two hour trip from home!

We visited on March 21,2021. The signs all over the zoo stated that masks and social distancing were mandatory. What they should say is that as long as you enter the zoo with a mask then you're good. The zoo staff will not tell people to wear a mask. Come on if Disney world can enforce masks then I'm sure the Birmingham zoo could. Also, there were a lot of exhibits that were closed. Maybe since half of the zoo is closed you could lower the admission price?

my wife and i took our grand daughters today 05/23/19. the 2 girls had a great time and we enjoyed getting to spend the day with them and each other as we both work 50 to 60 hours weekly. from my own perspective as an adult i was quite disappointed. we spent 120 plus dollars for admission and for all day ride bands for the train ride and the slide and the merry go round. then when we get inside the prices for refreshments were outrageous. 3 dollars for a 20 ounce coke and 8 dollars for a icee flavored ice. they charged for the exhibiits feeding the animals and more to touch or ride the camels. needless to say you could easily spend 300 or more dollars at this zoo in a day. also the layout of the zoo was very confusing and even though the trails had signs and maps it was still very confusing. the buildings were out dated and the animals to me looked miserable. also we saw no lions, no tigers and just 1 little bear, oh my. alot of fish and alot of birds and a few monkeys. yes they have a few big elephants and giraffes but like i said you had to pay for any interaction with them. overall i would give the zoo a 2 star rating just because we made the best of it and had fun. fun is priceless. another thing to note is they are doing construction to the front entrance and have alot of the parking fenced off so parking was terrible too. we had to park in the north 40 and walk a mile back to the zoo. it was hot. they do have a slash pad for the kids up close to the high dollar snack food. i thought it sucked for the price. my girls loved it but to be alabama's best zoo i was very disappointed at the animal attractions and the cost of refreshments. don't see myself going back. maybe we will try a different zoo next year.

Love!!

I had a great time at this zoo! The train ride around the zoo was very beautiful and informative. Although it was raining the day I went, there were still tons of zoo creatures out and about to see! I would recommend taking the kids or your significant other. You will have a great time. On a sad note, there are renovations going on at the zoo right now to make it even better. So keep that in mind as well.

I absolutely loved coming here as a child and am proud to be bringing my little adventurer here all the years later. Have always been on point with presentation, cleanliness, keeping relative and educational content and a safe environment for toddlers to Adults alike. And the Zoo-Light Safari is a must during the Christmas holidays. I've taken my little boy (3) years in a row! They really deck the zoo put and go the extra mile to make it a mystical place to be for the children.

Went to the zoo in 9/2019 for the first time in a few years. Extremely pricey now, food wise and ticket wise. Many exhibits are entirely too small for the animals living in them. Noticed several exhibits where the animals had no access to water (water bowls empty). One of the Fishing cats didn't even have any water in the exhibit to play or swim in. Fish tanks were so dirty you could not see in them. The pond where the turtles are by the otters was so disgusting and overgrown by lily pads you couldn't really view the turtles. One of the exhibits by the zebras was so overgrown I was shocked to see they actually had animals living in there. Disappointed that the zoo has gone so far downhill. Will not be coming back. Truly sad for some of the animals living there. I understand a zoo is designed to have animals in captivity for public viewing but some of the conditions just don't seem appropriate and able to provide a decent quality of life for the animals.

Amazing place to bring the family. My girls love it here. We usually come in the morning and stay till right after lunch, but today we learned to come right after lunch and stay until close. Not veryany people here in the evenings. The only down side is that everything is so expensive(food/drink). Pack a lunch and leave it in a cooler in the car(can't bring them inside) if you'll be here during lunch. You can leave and come back without being charged as long as you get your hand stamped first.

The Birmingham Zoo has become a once a month (at least) visit for my son and me. At first the Birmingham Zoo made me sad because of how small it was, but I soon realized that with it being a small zoo in a smaller city we do not have to deal with large crowds or struggle to find parking. It can be a great way to spend an hour or 4 depending on what your children want to do. There are a lot of indoor areas so we even went recently when it was raining and had the whole zoo to ourselves. Also the location is pretty great, because you can head over to the Botanical gardens and make a whole day of it or head into Mountain Brook village for food and/or shopping.

Their work is hard. Hard to make wild animals feel home. But the zoo's missions of conservation, education and sustainability are front and center and they are passionate about helping the captive and the free.

Lots of exhibits are closed and many of the animals weren't out. We purchased our tickets and wrist bands online as you're encouraged to avoid any extra contact. However, once we got there, we were informed that the carousel was closed. The train ride is just through the trees. There's one spot where you can see the elephant, but that's it, so it's not worth the money or the wait time. I was a bit disappointed overall, especially with the price.
If you go, I recommend purchasing your tickets in person and talking to them about what's actually open and available. Also, bring snacks and drinks yourself as the drinks and some food are ridiculously overpriced.

Focal point is definitely the Elephant exhibit. It's not a large zoo but it manages to capture some local charm in the Alabama exhibit The zoo has a Covid Mask Policy but its impossible to enforce. We love visiting the giraffes, zebras, and the lion. We will be visiting again!

Love this gem in Birmingham! Do yourself a favor and spring for the membership. The coupon books and perks pay for themselves, no doubt. Always clean, sweet little splash pads for the kids, and the new welcome center entrance is gorgeous!

I Have to agree with other reviews on here, the staff is rude, the habitats are dirty. It ruins the whole experience. I am a zoo member and I am not sure I want to renew it at this time. Had one staff member very snootily tell my wife not to feed the Flamingo's, and two rude kids at the barn tell us 'you have to move on, were training' and another tell us 'don't touch the horns' when we clearly was not touching the goats horns. Researching who manages this park to appeal to them about this problem.

Alot of exhibits we closed down and roped off. Still had to pay $100 for 2 adults and 3 kids even though we were not able to even see all of the animals and didn't get to do any of the activities.

Great time spent with the family! They were very helpful at the membership office and help us get the best package for the family. We got yearly passes because you truly get you moneys worth.

I grew up visiting this zoo and have been at least 6 times over my childhood, but it's been many years since my last visit.
Today I took my 5 year old and we had an amazing time! The changes are awesome! We loved feeding the giraffes and lorikeets. The restaurant near the elephant area was fantastic (wild side fries were the BEST).
This was an excellent experience and half-priced Tuesday was a very pleasant surprise! I rolled our savings into 2 adventure bands.

Love it
