Noticed that there were comments of the rooms needing an update. They must be listening to their guests. The hotel is under major remodeling during which they have managed to keep their guest experience nothing less than excellent.
Our suite was on a floor that was far more than updated-- it was a COMPLETE remodel. We would have thought we were in a new property had we not known that we checked in to an established Marriott property.
Service was nothing less than exceptional and my definition of exceptional truly means without exception.
Would highly recommend this hotel.

Carter family had our family reunion there. Housekeeping did not clean our rooms the first day; only made up the beds and took the towels out. Didn't bother to clean the bathrooms. We got rewards points for that, but had to ask. The banquet manager did not allow my family to take some of the food from our banquet to our rooms because they said it was a safety issue. NO, the staff put our food in foil and ate it themselves!! Our money wasted! "Spirit to Serve" my azz...DO NOT HAVE YOUR FAMILY REUNION THERE BLACK PEOPLE. They treat you like they're doing you a favor!!

I've loved my stay here! I wanted to avoid driving an hour to take my NCLEX exam and chose to just book a hotel. My stay has been great! Clean room, bathroom, and overall hotel. Flat screen tv is decent sized with Netflix and other programs. Nice desk for whatever is needed. Safety deposit box also! The staff is wonderful!

Awful experience! We were given the wrong room because a soccer team came in and needed all of the double rooms, so they gave them to the team! Bed was absolutely DISGUSTING!!! Only manager on duty was the restaurant manager. Worst Marriott I ve ever stayed at by far!

The hotel is great, the building is nice, and clean. However, the benefits you may expect from this Marriott is not what you are looking for to pay. What I mean is that you pay enough money to receive atleast a free breakfast for the price you pay. I've been to cheaper, and less fashionable hotels with better rooms than this one and they still offer free breakfast. That shows me they care about the people who book rooms at their hotels.

Oh! Don't even think that you'll be getting something out of being an employee at a marriott. As any other passing guest that's what you will get too.

Only come to this hotel if you are wanting a small room and a Tv that barely responds to the remote.

We spent two dreadful nights at this full service Marriott. This hotel has no air conditioning in the room despite several attempts by maintenance staff to resolve the problem. While apologetic, they were unable to get the room temp below 78 saying that one of the chillers was off-line being replaced. That combined with black mold in the shower, broken furniture and sheets that would not stay on the mattress, indicate a very poorly managed property. I have been a full-time business traveler spending most nights in Marriott properties by default but have been gravitating to other chains as this type of experience has been happening more frequently. I would avoid this property in Birmingham as there are better places to stay that are better managed.

Disgusting!! This is NOT a 3.5star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. I am not a 'fancy' person but I need something clean with a comfy bed and in a safe area to be satisfied.
We pulled up and it was like the neighborhood nightclub ( a low class one ) had just let out in the parking lot. There were groups of people screaming and partying with boxes of wine in hand. When we were checking in, the poor front desk girl was being harassed by one of the men walking around with a box of wine. He was repeatedly propositioning her for sex and I felt so sorry for her.
We were placed on the 2nd floor. We had my 4 year old daughter and 13 year old son with us and we didn't feel safe at all with the people who were milling around. The carpets in the hallways are FILTHY and the elevator was dirty with spilled food all over it. When we got to the 2nd level, the stench of obviously very-recently-smoked marijuana was in the air... More people milling around the hallways with curlers in their hair and bathrobes on. Sounds of partying from the rooms.
We were so tired from that we just wanted to sleep. We pulled out the sofa bed: no bedding and no where in the room. Had to call front desk to have it delivered. 20 min later, it arrived.
The wallpaper in the bathrooms was straight out of grandma's house in the 1970's. I lifted the mattress to check for bed bugs and found used candy wrappers all stuffed underneath the mattress.
I don't expect perfection, but many things were far below the normal Marriott standard. We will neverrrrr be back and I will warn my friends and family who travel though here on the way to and from Destin to save their money and stay elsewhere. The Hyatt in Hoover is awesome and we will happily pay the price difference to have a clean and safe experience.

Conveniently located on Hwy 280. River City Grill downstairs is a decent restaurant/bar. Surin Restaraunt & Pappadeaux right there, too. The Summit for $$$ shopping/movies. Downtown is 10 minutes away. Airport 22 minutes-no shuttle. Upper floors just remodeled. 1 elevator

Great experience! I have no idea why it was so cheep. Truly set the bar high for hotels from now on. The food and bar was amazing ,great whisky slection! Rooms and facilities were top notch. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. If you stay here your not getting just a room, your getting a complete 5 star vip experience! Hands down the best hotel experience my wife and I have ever had. Anytime I'm passing through Birmingham we will surely be staying here.

Huge ripoff. Booked a room here because it is advertised as dog friendly. When I arrived at the hotel, after I had already handed my credit card to the woman at the front desk, she casually mentions that there is a non-refundable $150 fee for pets. I only paid $80 for the room! They would not refund my room so I could stay somewhere else, so I had no choice but to pay $230 for a hotel room with a tiny bathtub, a TV remote that barely worked, and no free breakfast. I d have gotten more at a Hampton Inn, for goodness sake! To make it worse, my partner used to be a Marriott Rewards super-member, and when he called on my behalf about the pet fee, they basically said, yeah. Too bad.

They treat their guests like royalty from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave. Wonderful bar, restaurant and M club.
I will definitely stay in this Marriott again.

The rooms here are splendid, modern, and clean. This hotel is at a great location Southeast of downtown Birmingham, which is 10-15 min driving distance. It's close to the Summit which is a great outlet style mall boasting some good restaurants. The prices here are unbelievable for what it is and is one of my favorite spots to stay when I'm in Birmingham!

The hotel's housekeeping voicemail states they will call you back within 48 hours. This is not true. I have called a dozen times over the course of two weeks and left messages. They are very slow in their response. I hope they will see this review and revisit that department.

My favorite Marriott because of the great service and lounge. Only reason not a 5 is because the building is aged and the TVs don't have a true HDMI hook up. I do know they will get a remodel at which time they will get 5. Amazing guest service!

Newly renovated room looks nice. Well equipped room and the beds are the usual comfortable Marriott mattress.
Friendly staff members. Great breakfast option. There's a Starbucks on premise to help wake you up!
The only downside for this hotel is the ratio of rooms/floors to elevator. There's only two elevators for the entire hotel? During our stay this weekend, there's only one operating elevator.

Not your average Marriott. This one is more like a small chain motel in other words the price doesn't match the quality. Most Marriotts, you get everything high quality but this one was kind of on the downslope side from the check-in process to the dirty tub on to the disgusting food. Let's start with check-in being at 3:30pm with no option for early check in even for rewards members, then you get your room after all day has passed and there's a dirt ring in the tub ughhh, the food they served during our conference was not the greatest, they were behind schedule, the front desk receptionists fail to acknowledge customers, they'll literally stand there holding the phone 15min without saying just a minute or anything and I am 5 months pregnant and was already really tired. The accomadations pretty much suck so if you're pregnant or sickly go somewhere else because this hotel will not allow early access to rooms or anything. The list of services offered run slim to none. I didn't like this Marriott at all and that's a first for me as it's usually one of my preferred picks. If I'm paying Marriott prices I will not settle for motel 6 quality. Hopefully our conference location for Birmingham will change because I don't like this Marriott. It's not very comforting when home away from home, no complimentary breakfast or nothing. They do have a restaurant that they bank off of though after you have paid all the money to stay there but the foods not good. I actually found a few other good hotel chains while driving the area and next year I will certainly pick a little smarter.

Nice hotel with some recent renovations. A nice place for meetings, and events. Staff seems to be relatively new at least when I stayed here. Not necessarily bad staff just new to their jobs. I would stay here again.

The hotel is fairly new. Our ice container was dirty. The pool had a high concentration of chlorine that was so strong, it burned your eyes. We only stayed in the pool area for about 15 minutes before we had to leave. After the first night, that next morning, my son stated that he was itching on the back of his neck. When I looked at the back of his neck, I noticed a lot of small red bumps that went down his back. Initially I thought maybe he was allergic to something but I thought about he hadn't eaten anything so I didn't understand where the bumps came from. I asked for new linens for the couch bed. They were never brought but someone did come to clean the room. Later that day, he took a nap and when he woke up his stomach was now covered in red bumps. I came to the conclusion that maybe we had bed bugs. My husband went downstairs to talk to the front desk about it. The manager happened to be there with some people from corporate office. They came up, examined my son's body, and the couch bed. They decided to move us to another room. They were very friendly and understanding to our needs. The next morning, someone from corporate office spoke to my husband, apologized for everything that happened, promised that he would send out LabCorp to examine the room, and Gathered information so that LabCorp can contact us and let us know what it was. He stated they had a dog convention the week before and maybe something could have contracted from the dogs that were there in the building. Either way, it was very disappointing to go to a family reunion and leave with your four-year-old son body covered in small red itchy bumps. Although the managerial staff and corporate office that was present was friendly we will not be staying at this hotel again.

I attended a work event here and thoroughly enjoyed the staff and meeting rooms the only flaw that I saw was they did not have quite enough drinks, refreshments, and chairs for all of our staff however that could have been a miscommunication on either side. I would highly recommend having any type of business function here.

Headphones went missing from the room. I contacted lost and found. A month later no one has given me an update to tell me that they even bothered to check. The front desk staff are great, but the fact that their customer service team can't seem to be bothered to even look into this issue is troubling. If you stay here, be sure to not leave valuables out.

A newly remodeled with a great vibe with its update. The staff is second to none. Very friendly and very accommodating. The sales staff does a great job in meeting all of our group needs. We have been staying there for 4 years in a row when we go to Birmingham.

This is one of the only business hotels along the 280 corridor and it is no big deal. The hotel is not very clean and the rooms are not cleaned to a high level everyday. The housekeeping staff only will change sheets when a room is being turned over. The management of this hotel are absolutely incompetent and the front desk staff is hit or miss. There are some spectacular people on the front desk but their are some absolute non- customer focused people working on the front desk as well. The people who are in charge are purely incompetent. This is one of the few Marriott hotels that I have stayed in where the food is absolutely awful. I have stayed in this hotel for the past 4 months every other week and the rooms are not cleaned. There is hair and trash left from the previous guests the executive lounge on the first floor and the food that is served is pitiful. Another hotel that cuts cost to the detriment of their frequent guests. I have requested the toilet to be unstopped on several occasions and have come back from a workday and the room has not been serviced on multiple occasions. The management team are just plain incompetent and the housekeeping staff are not held accountable. Unfortunately, this is allowed to continue since their are few options for good business hotels in the area at this quality level. I also believe that this type of stuff continues because of the frequent Marriott Rewards customers chasing that false status of being a diamond member. I am choosing to pull my companies entire corporate contract from this hotel because I have had too many excuses for the overall poor service given at this hotel.

Went for a professional development speaker. Did not have much interaction with the hotel but it was very classy from what I saw and could use a few interior updates. Also the credit card machine was down so I couldn't buy snacks.

They were not following CDC guidelines. There wasn't any soap in the bathroom, not even hand soap. My husband went to get soap and shampoo they charged me $3.00 for the 1/2 travel size stuff. The employee were not helpful. Bkft was supposed to be free and it wasn't.

Opportunities for improvements: the Wi-Fi system room+last name not working, I did not pay attention when checked in. Had to asked again the next day.

Had to switch rooms because of spider problem. Called for late night room service and was told the hours were a misprint. Front desk clerk said the kitchen had limited items and it's up to staff if they want to prepare late night meals. Have been waiting 45 minutes for bedding for pull out couch. Went to front desk and they didn't have any linens. Still don't have bedding. Very large family reunion being held in hotel and was told the security guard was very busy on errands and our bedding should be here "any minute". Security guard just got here with a top sheet. No pillow, blanket or other sheet. Told me he knew it wouldn't be enough and I'd just have to call the front desk again. Marriott, you can do better! Update. Had to go downstairs again and got two more rolled up sheets. Front desk clerk checked housekeeping and said there is no more bedding available for pull out couches. He's now checking all available unoccupied rooms to find me bedding.

2am update. Front desk clerk now states he's calling other Marriott's in the area to find blankets. My son is now curled up under a sheet and towels. Ridiculous.

The room was reasonably nice, but there were a few things that bugged me. For one, no free wifi. Also, while the breakfast appeared to be complimentary, it was not. It was $18 for food that just was not in any way worth that. Not to mention the fact that the price was not mentioned anywhere that I could see. The last thing was the staff. Check-in was a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Ultimately, this was very disappointing considering the Hyatt down the street was such a pleasure and cheaper.

Was there fore work in 2016. Nothing good or bad to report about the hotel itself. HOWEVER I'd like to commend the shuttle driver for going above and beyond- I was sitting outside on a bench by the side entrance when the shuttle pulled up. He had a very very drunk lady passenger and he treated her like gold getting her out of the van and to the door even though she was litterally doing anything you could think a drink person would on the 20' journey. If all there staff is like that then everyone should pick this hotel.
