I attended a function here and I wasn't impressed. The location is excellent, and the hotel grand, but the three course meal with coffee and petit fours generally wasn't of the high quality I was expecting of a hotel of this standard. I was told by others that the pork for the main course wasn't very well cooked (apparently it was dry), while my vegetarian offering was somewhat disappointing, being asparagus wrapped in pastry served with a small quantity of vegetables and some cheese sauce. The starter was a slightly odd dish of smoked salmon slices (melon slices for myself) accompanied by melon soup, and many weren't keen on it. The portion sizes also weren't large enough to leave me (or many of the other guests) feeling satisfied, and the coffee was a very small serving. The creme brulee desert however was excellent.
I was also unable to drink alcohol due to my pregnancy, but was only offered a glass of water as an alternative to champagne on arrival when I asked if there was a non-alcoholic alternative. I then had to specifically ask them for a non-alcoholic alternative drink to wine at the meal after turning the alcohol down, and felt like I was putting the staff out by doing so. I felt particularly for a hotel like the Balmoral, there should have been a better and more readily available alternative for those who cannot or prefer not to drink alcohol. It didn't seem to have been considered.
However the surroundings are beautiful, the hotel smart and grand, and it is a location that is very central and easy to get to, so it would probably be excellent if staying here on a luxury break as a tourist or on business. I just unfortunately wouldn't be able to recommend it for a function given my experience on this occasion.
