Good place for children. My child enjoyed be there
Love this place. Had so much fun checking out the museum and special events. The best part tho? All for FREE! Definitely a must see.
It s really exciting to see the formation of media with a bunch of interactive activities
Such an awesome place with the most unique experiences
One of our favourite family destinations when in the city. The tech interactions and the moving image history is a great way to amuse the kids and the kiddults .
The Screen World is very fun and exciting to visit, very enjoyable activities and interesting media history of Australia. Staff was also very helpful and is very knowledgeable of their workplace!
Free museum in Melbourne. Few hours of fun not a whole day experience
So much fun at the Wonderland exhibit! Beautiful, creative, and interactive. The Mad Hatter's tea party scene was incredible in its high-tech imaging. Not just for kids.
ACMI is bloody awesome. You can't say a bad word about the place. Every city should have one (except you'd have to call it something else of course).
This place celebrates the moving image in all its forms. I love cinema (that's what posh folk call movies) and ACMI facilitates this love by bringing out and showing films that matter. They have no kind of ethos in terms of style and genre etc, so you get a real insight here into the world of cinema and its many niches. I've seen union documentaries, remastered classics, music doc's and new releases here and the cinemas themselves are some of the more comfy around and they sport world-class sound and projection technology.
They also have exhibition spaces here and along with their running historical sort of stuff, they show amazing collections of movie paraphernalia, props and memorabilia from Kubrick to Burton and beyond. Seriously, this is an incredible resource and all Australians should be encouraged to to get into it. Do it.
Interesting place for the history of moving images. Plenty of interactive exhibits as well to keep visitors engaged. Even visiting just for the free galleries is worth it.
A fun place to visit for adults and kids alike. Great exhibitions too.
Heaps of fun for everyone! The video games were heaps of fun to play and we even had a go at VR! Most of it is free besides the movie screening.
Really cool museum to check out if you're into film and technology. The screen worlds exhibition showcases films an actors and actresses that are connected to Australia over the years. There are also many displays of old film technology and game consoles. It's a great place to take your kids, as there are many cool interactive things to do, and kid-friendly games.
During the time I went there was also an Alice in Wonderland exhibit going on which was absolutely amazing. I've always been a fan of Alice and Wonderland, and they did a great job of recapping the history and making it fun for people of all ages. Definitely recommend!
This place was really cool to explore. I enjoyed the interactive nature of the exhibits, thought they were interesting and well set up. It was quite fun and I got to learn some new things along the way.
A very cool museum - its also free and a great way to spend a few hours
A great place to visit. Be sure to catch their major exhibition and also see a film in one of the two excellent cinemas. Lots to buy at the shop too!
A very cool museum right in federation square - fun way to kill a few hours and even better - it's free
Great exhibitions I have attended quite a few. I also Enjoy the different movies screenings. Also worth popping into the gift shop if you are in the area.
Fantastic! Well worth the trip. Friendly, helpful staff, high standard of cleanliness and absolutely brilliant displays.
Amazing learning, exploring, and fun. Children monopolize much of the interactive sections. All together, the ACMI encourages you to consider the technological, esthetic, social, cultural, political, and entertainment aspects of "moving images."
Good displays and friendly staff. To enjoy it you really need to be familiar with some of the old Australian shoes
Great place for kids to discover and learn about the film industry and internet / games evolution.
The entry is free, there are lot of interactive stations including games stations from all ages (street fighter, minecraft, etc).
We spent 3 hours there and didn't want to leave.
Great place for a school excursion, or a day out with your family. The kids will love it. Very interactive and interesting with a bit of history of Australian cinematography and movie making in general.
Some of the rooms are worth visiting and there are lots of games you can play.
Watched another hour of The Clock - only 22 hours to go between now &? 10th March - I had better get a wriggle on - I am loving The Clock
We went to the Wonderland Exhibit and had so much fun! It was like going back to our childhood where everything just fills us with awe.
Great place to visit for people of all ages. Many interactive sections and lots to see. A very interesting place, especially if you like tv and film. we spent hours in there and really enjoyed it. Highly recommend!
I was impressed by the "Screen Worlds" exhibition at this wonderfully modern museum.
We saw the excellent 'Alice in wonderland' exhibition with the kids. It was very well done and highly recommend. Whist there we had a look at the exhibition on television and digital media thinking it would be a quick drop in and out. The kids loved it! Had to drag them out after about an hour.
It's a building with normal amenities and friendly staff. Unless you're going to see a Dave Hughes comedy show here you should be fine and if you're going to a Dave Hughes comedy show I assume you don't bother reading reviews anyway
Nice free exhibition about the media age! And so interactive! You could try old video games or watch documentaries about movies. Film equipment, movie posters and other interesting stuff. A highlight was the camera room where you could make your own time slice jump/move from matrix...
Highly recommend it... Until next time!
Recently went to the Alice in Wonderland exhibition. It was a really well layed out exhibit, lots of memorabilia and interactive displays. The tea party projection show was a fun installation.
Really fun, really good to go alone or with a group. The exhibition is actually really interesting and there are a lot of interacrive displays :)
Old computer games consoles/machines to have a play with and great visual effects involving yourself. Very interactive. Great for kids. Plus a replica of the 'Last V8 Interceptor' and various other bits of movie memorabilia.
Hey we go. Just one of amazing places in Melbourne city. Just 1 minutes walk from flinders station. The ground level gallery have a free entry. It's more than enough for kids to spend 2hours playing with the activity. It's really so good. Adult will enjoy it as well. It's a cinema upstairs for a bit of money.
The kids did the holiday program here. Apparently they loved it. They got to make a movie with a bloopers reel and they got to make a claymation which was neat. The kids were able to come up with their own stories and see them come to life on the big screen. I'm sure it was an amazing experience. And it comes highly recommended. I was glad to see they actually checked who the child left with. Other holiday programs don't seem to care much.
Cinema experience was great but the snack bar selection can be improved.
Always been my go to places when I was younger and always still has
Great exhibitions on. The regular displays are cool too, but try to pick a time when it's quiet to get the most out of it. Loved the Terror Nullius compilation movie.
Even if you don't enter the centre it's a good place to just hang around the areas outside and relax while one is shopping in the CBD.
It was a surprise that the entry to this museum was free (excludes the special exhibition) and it was actually a nice experience going through the evolution of media and games. I went here with a friend of mine and we were able to try out a variety of games, such as Minecraft (console) and Pong. Other than that, there was also a variety of interactive displays which you can photograph. The staff was also quite nice here, as we were interested in the VR that was provided, and told us there was a wait for it. Would come here again.
Google said they were open. So I walked blocks and blocks in the heat of the day and then I get there to find it's closed for renovations. Fantastic.
Best of Melbourne. Contemporary, interactive, fun: definetly visit ACMI
Had attended some events here in the past and the experience was great. Would recommend others to host their events here.
I bought my ticket from a very nice staff member who acknowledged me. The staff were very kind when directing me to drop off my bag and then welcomed me with a smile. The actual exhibition was incredible. I loved the immersing experience with actual references from the movies. I loved the artworks and amazingly detailed descriptions of both the story s development and about the creators themselves. I was also amazed from how many little activities that were available for all ages. I believe this is a great show if you want a fun time with your children or friends. Especially if you order the tea party tickets.
Thought the organisation of the staff was really lacking. Show started at 8.20pm and we were all standing out 15 mins later. They then herded us in really quickly and the show finished at the time it was supposed to so the comedian obviously curtailed their set.
Theres an art gallery there, art = 5 stars m8. Also saw some electronic music there, electronic music = 5 stars m8. Sick 1
Free entrance and wifi l, nice place to stay and interesting place for all ages
Quirky museum with fascinating temporary exhibitions. Handily located in federation square near transport and restaurants. The shop is worth a look too.
I remembered visiting the ACMI museum end of 2015, and spending a very interesting and good time there. We can learn a lot of stuff while having fun and even test few experiences.
Now, ACMI is unfortunately closed for a new 'development' and will re-open in 2020. Too bad that I can't visit again now, but be patient, it will worth ;)
The museum itself isn't too spectacular and after viewing it once I don't think I would return but the special exhibit for Alice in Wonderland was spectacular and I cried when leaving because I wished I didn't have to. 10/10 reccomend going if there something specific you want to see but otherwise it's possibly not worth it.
Great place to uncover the film history, fun to interact with the gadgets and get inspirations for free!
I'm gonna give this place 4 stars because I love movies and have great interest in learning how the magic happens behind the camera or digital pens, CGI and whatever.
We went to see the DreamWorks Animation last week and I have to say that I had a great time. From the hilarious KungFu Panda to the ever-popular Shrek, the awesome wow How To Train Your Dragon and the fun and 'I like to move it move it' Madagascar plus many more; it's a great opportunity to watch learn how Po, Shrek, Fiona and the other characters that we love so much were born.
The exhibition is a celebration of over 20 years of DreamWorks animation and features over 400 items such as concept drawings, original artworks, interviews and interactive displays.
Seriously guys, it's worth a visit so make sure you have a look if you haven't been yet. The Dragon Flight experience was the highlight of the arvo for us. You go into a room and they've set it up so that it feels like you're sitting on Toothless on the screen and you basically fly over Berk. It's pretty cool when it starts because they've made it so that the screen is blank and the scenery, people, landscape is drawn as you fly over. It was wicked!
Tickets are about $24 I think so it's alright. Oh I love Toothless............
Great meeting place. Always love coming back to my hometown. We came to Federation Square to see the Wonderland exhibition. It was fantastic! Federation square is looking great as usual and Melbourne is one of the worlds best cities to visit.
Great location to enjoy performances! Very friendly and helpful staff. The public galleries are well set out and very interesting -kids will love the interactive game tables, and lots of throw-back advertisements keep the nostalgia value high. A real gem to visit when in Melbourne.
Amazingly well done museum. Lots to do, see, and listen to. Gift shop has some great items at reasonable prices. No entry fee, so suggest leaving a donation so they can continue to offer interesting exhibits like "Cleverman", which rocked. Need to get the series now!!
Kudos to the ACMI for protecting and celebrating our film industry in Australia. Amazing screenings with today being no exception - a donutumentary and the film 'Pawnshop' - a great exhibition of life in Footscray. Keep up the great work
Always love visiting here, strange but cool exhibits- most are interactive as well! Great history about all technologys around screens and media including games and tv.
Interesting and engaging exhibitions on the moving image. The touring exhibitions are usually worth the cost and well put together. Easy to access from public transport.
We had a work event there, great place and location
Brilliant museum, ended up spending far longer than I planned here due to all the interesting exhibits. Well worth a visit.
Awesome experience at ACMI. 3 separate schools in the one lecture. A seamless experience in viewing an important film (Rear Window) for all students was accompanied by an expertly researched and engaging lecture.
Great place to kill a few hours (especially in the 40 degree heat) and very kid friendly.
Great place to explore. Loads too see. Like the exhibits. You can learn a great deal in a short period of time. If you are in Melbourne. Go and see it. If you live in melbourne, go an explore it.
One of the most interactive, fun, interesting museums I've ever been to. Highly recommend visiting and checking out the exhibitions before they finish. We got to try augmented reality VR and loved it. The Clock exhibition was fascinating and really recommend it (a great concept). It's also family friendly and has food and drink options as well. The best part is that it was completely FREE! Trust me and go to ACMI ASAP!
Super cool interactive museum! I had a lot of fun playing there
Great free day out with amazing interactive experiences. Definitely worth visiting.
Really enjoyed the Wonderland exhibition. Lots of original content and quirky details to bring us into the looking glass world. A world class museum.
Very nice and informative. Lots of things to check out. Very interactive.
Definitely recommend. Appreciate how its free but it doesnt hurt to donate $5.
Great place with lots of information and interactive exhibits.
Great. Definitely worth a visit even if it's just to reminisce about the TV programmes you watched as a kid. If you are interested in the cinema and it's history this place is a must
Good to go see. Shows history of alice in wonderland and the many different variations that got produced over its life. Would recommend to go see with the family and let the kids explore the mysteries that the expo has to offer
Very interesting history of TV in this country. Well worth spending as much time as possible.
Love the film and TV exhibit. Excellent snapshot into Australia's vibrant media history.
When I said Kino was my favourite cinema I was lying. THIS is my favourite cinema. But unfortunately it's going under renovations at the moment (which is unnecessary because it is already PERFECT) so is currently unavailable. ACMI Cinema 2 was basically my home. It even had a peculiar, nice smell that was very comforting. The seats are SO comfortable. The staff are really great and know their stuff. ACMI also show some really interesting retrospectives, as well as normal movies, which is much better than the Astor's itinerary imo. When they showed The Clock, they showed it at a cinema that was underneath the building, and walking to this particular room was so appropriately surreal, because it involved a huge, dark, spotlit passage in which one had to wait in to get in to the screening room, even at like 10, 11pm at night, because this is WHERE THE CULTURE LIVES! It's also close to the beautiful Flinders Station, and they have a cool shop and cafe/ bar. However, once I believe I caught a pretty bad cold in ACMI, after watching some experimental shorts.
The Australian Centre for the Moving Image is one of the better museums that Melbourne has on offer. It is located right on Fed Square, just across the road from Hosiers Lane and nestled in amongst the impressive postmodern architecture.
Their website describes their story as follows:
"A unique institution at the heart of Melbourne's iconic meeting place, Federation Square, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) celebrates, explores and promotes the cultural and creative richness of the moving image in all its forms - film, television and digital culture."
I have mainly experience the exhibitions that change quite frequently. One of which was a free exhibition that told through a range of short videos Australia's love affair with travelling and the Kombi camper vans. The other exhibition that I remember quite vividly was a video games one that offered you the chance to explore its history and also play a large number of classic games.
Fun seeing the car from George Miller's Mad Max movies, I did not expect that. Even if it's just a replica... And fun playing a bit of Super Mario even though I couldn't get past the first level. All in all an okay exhibition.
Fantastic venue for more unusual movies. We sat a 50th anniversary screening of the film "On the Beach". The cinema was quite full. It was great to see pictures of Melbourne from 50 years ago.
My son just loved looking at Alice in Wonderland. So did his Great Uncle and myself (Mum). The tea room that was all projectors, protected an afternoon tea onto a table and the walls, was utterly amazing. It was really well set up, with heaps for parents/adults and children alike. My son especially enjoyed making a card and protecting it and himself into a wall. The history in the exhibit and the modern day Alice in Wonderland was very diverse, fun and interactive. Would go again if it was there next time in Melbourne.
(Can't remove photos that are meant to be worth artVo review for some reason)
The idea of the museum is great, I just think the path could have been structured better since was not clear were to go next.
Alice in wondeand exhibit was fantastic, great quality display.
Great exhibit ! I had a few hours to kill before my flight and stumbled on it by accident. Even better, was the fact they had a very big free area, where you could appreciate classic and modern games
A full package of entertainment under a single roof. Art lovers will always find some interesting exhibitions going on there. There is a cinema hall and a pub as well.
But the most amazing thing is the gallery where history and facts blend with entertainment in stylized fashion. There are plenty of games, illusions, installation arts and all of them are free.
One of the enjoyable place that we visited during our Melbourne visit. The advancement in movie techniques since early 90's was well documented here. Kids as well as others can enjoy playing video games here. The concept of catching your moves by 36 cameras, converting in movie and then getting link of same through mail is fantastic.
Awesome interactive museum, great cafe, highly recommended!
Great audio visual experience. Helpful and friendly staff. Sensory overload but great. Thoroughly recommended
Great place for families, students or a fun place to go and explore and play some games. Unfortunetly the screen world area doesn't change much at all over the months or years so that's one thing to improve but besides that it's a great place in the city to check out :)
ACMI enhances Melbourne's cultural status. I love seeing a movie here, especially a foreign film or as part of a film festival like the Japanese one. To have a coffee or a glass of wine beforehand at the ACMI cafe enhances the pleasure. Long live ACMI
Second time visiting and enjoyed it so much I brought the kids this time. They loved it too.
Do take your friends who come to visit Melbourne if they have a discerning taste for art and craft.
Even if you are not going inside you can just relax here outside ACMI on a beautiful sunny day and just relax.
Love the Family Sundays activities at ACMI. Staff at ACMI are friendly and very helpful. Love the Screen World exhibition as it showcased how moving images evolved through the years. We had a blast of a time recreating our own Matrix scene which we were able to send to ourselves.
There is a staff named McQueen who was very engaging and he was very informative and helpful too.
Where culture lives. Always interesting exhibitions
A great anthology of our moving pictures, games and popular culture ..... a pleasant surprise and very teenager friendly! Loved seeing Kylie and Edna's dresses.
A great place to spend, kids will love it, Computer games, VR experience, motion capture, history of cinema etc are a few things to do. Cafe, bar, cinema theatre, toilets are available inside, u don't have to step out for anything. We spent 5 hours there as my kids were spending a lot time exploring the computer games, these games are mostly the previous gen games of the 90s and 2k period and u play these with ps4 and led screens.
Great place to visit if you're looking for something to do
Best place to learn about movie and TV history in Australia
