Yvette Paletta Review of Genesys Regional Medical Cente...

We had to bring my 88 year old father to the ER on September 3rd with what we suspected to be a mini-stroke. Let me begin with the excellent part of this review: the entire ER staff (secretaries, aides, nurses, and doctors) were absolutely wonderful. Dad was brought in promptly and they began testing. He was then admitted to 4 North and again the entire staff was amazing the doctors, nurses, aides, nutrition, and housekeeping staff; absolutely no complaints!
Where the problem came in was with Social Services. My father who, prior to this had been in excellent health - still driving, politically and socially active (more like 58 than 88) was diagnosed with a mini-stroke caused by a pulmonary embolism that began with a blood clot in his leg that broke and traveled to his lung, along with numerous other clots in his leg. He is need of speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy and is weak as a kitten from this ordeal. I requested that, upon discharge, he be sent to a rehab facility near MY home in Orchard Lake (one hour away from Grand Blanc) as I am also caring for my mother (who has Alzheimer disease). Both his primary care physician and neurologist were in agreement with me that my father would heal faster and better in a rehab facility and since his insurance would cover it, let's do it. So what did the social worker do? DENY the request and order in-home care! I am almost 62 and am now caring for both Mom and Dad in my home which is absolutely outrageous! What I am going through is tantamount to running a nursing home.
All we can figure out is that the social worker denied the request for the rehab facility that I chose because it is not part of the HMO network that Genesys is affiliated with. What ever happened to putting the patient (and the care givers) first? Because of jurisdiction (Reverence has more than one area that they service) more than 2 weeks had passed since Dad was discharged and he had yet to receive one minute of therapy! The in-take nurse came after 5 days and finally the physical therapist several days after that THEN she had to fax her therapy notes to the PCP who then was supposed to submit the order and authorization for Dad to go to the rehab facility by my home (which, by the way, is ranked 5 out of 5 stars). The Social Worker responsible for this should be ashamed there is no excuse for this!
My father could have been well on his way to a speedy recovery but instead started his daily therapy sessions 17 days after his discharge. And will this social worker be reprimanded for this? Highly unlikely. I guess they try to make it as difficult as possible for the families of the patients to try to force them to use the network facilities in Grand Blanc. I can guarantee that something like this will never again happen to my family. Forewarned is forearmed and I will escalate the matter to a supervisor who WILL do it my way or I will expose this to the news media. Just shameful!
