Romeo et Juliet is the one and only performance I ...

Romeo et Juliet is the one and only performance I have seen at the Met. I worked here for a short time years ago calling benefactors to give generously. When running an errand I made a wrong turn to find the ballerinas readying themselves for rehearsal. Years later I saw my first major league opera.

The Metropolitan Opera is world-renowned, a class act. Is a review really necessary? I don't think so, but I continue. The chandeliers descend and rise to notify patrons the performance is about to begin. Time to finish your wine served on the Mezzanine at intermission and gracefully make your way back to your seat. Guys can be graceful also you know. Some dance here.

My only disappointment: I was the only man in the house wearing a suit and tie. A mecca like the Met is a celebration itself regardless of the production on stage. I was taught to dress my best for such occasions. This theatre is so different from the New York State Theater next door on the Quadrangle which is more laid back. That is the "People's House. The Met is where the imaginary royalty reside.

I attended four operas in one year at the NYS Theater on various leaves from the military. It wasn't until recently that my visit here finally became a reality. It was unfortunate that after the final curtain we had to rush to a fine Italian restaurant in the Village, then catch a 6am flight out of LGA.

This is arguably, the finest opera house in the world that is immeasurably more glamorous than its sister venue facing north and I will never forget this special moment with my Sweetheart. Eight years later the Met and my Lady are still with me in spirit...as well as in reality here in New York.
