The "Met" is world renowned for its superior performances. It attracts the finest artistic talent in the country, and is on my "Top 5" venues for classical performance. Musicians, singers, costumes, production quality, are all first rate. The Met does tend to "play it safe" when it comes to the season repertoire. Lots of the standard works by Verdi, Puccinni, Mozart etc. I'm not saying it's a bad thing - it's actually a good thing. "Standard works" attract the audience and make opera accessible to more of us. The theater itself is deep burgundy and gold and it's cavernously large -- but it doesn't sacrifice acoustics. You are basically guaranteed a first class experience at The Met. Aside from the music, a really lavish opera is very visual so if you have never been to an opera because it's not your kind of thing, you must go to an opera and experience the orchestra and stage in real life with your eyes and ears. There are two (almost) floor to ceiling Chagall paintings that face out to Lincoln Center. If the sun is shining on the paintings, curtains automatically close to protect these masterpieces. And that's what the Met is - a masterpiece. But that's just me.
