Can't believe its taken me this long. I had gastro surgery end of October/'16; the ward was full, so they put me in ITU for the night (had some pain issues, as well). The staff (all of them) are fantastic. Very caring, very good at their jobs, and just very pleasant people. Of all the people I saw over a day and a half, most were from elsewhere abroad. It just drives home how essential the NHS is, and how essential immigration is. Could not have asked for better care; it was brilliant. If I could remember all their names, I'd thank them personally, but there are dozens of lovely people I've seen here.

I've gone private; it IS faster, but both the level of care and bedside manners are sorely lacking. Everything is a transaction.

EDIT: O6/2018. Have just had my gallbladder and a loop of intestine removed. Again, the level of care is truly an indictment on how much the NHS cares and how much they're needed. Though very painful, I don't think I'd have gotten through without the absolutely delightful staff; in particular the nurses. Doctors are fab, albeit very busy, of course. Also, love love love the lady at Day Centre reception. It's nice to have someone so positive when you walk through those doors feeling rather nervous. Great experience again, when it could have easily been terrible.
