On February 17th, during a snowstorm, I steered my 2016 Malibu into a snow drift to avoid hitting a dog on the interstate. I agrivated an existing injury to my shoulder. I called AAA for a tow and left the scene with my wife who was following me in our truck to seek medical treatment. I left my daughter (20 yrs old) with the car who will meet me at the medical facility. Deputy J. Mertzig arrived on scene after my departure. I was on the phone with my daughter (bluetooth in the car) and overheard Mertzig tell my daughter that the car was going to be extracted by HIS tow driver and that she was not to wait for AAA, who happened to be moments away. I instructed her to wait for AAA and not let some random person hook to my Malibu, explaining that AAA has proper equipment, training and insurance. Officer Mertzig threatened (extorted) her by staying that if she didn't allow his man to attempt the extraction, she would be cited. When she declined, following my instructions, officer Mertzig cited her for Failure to Maintain Control. She was not even driving. While officer Mertzig was issuing the citation, AAA arrived on scene. Officer Mertzig left the scene while AAA finished the extraction. I intend to file a complaint with the Sheriff's dept regarding his actions, dishonesty, and lack of professionalism.
