As illustrated in the accompanying photo below, those walking past the beautiful Lincoln Center For The Performing Arts complex in Manhattan s Lincoln Square section during the summer months are treated to the quintessentially New York City phenomenon of New Yorkers, whether or not they had tickets to a performance, enjoying a summer evening reclining in front of the Lincoln Center fountains with the Metropolitan Opera House serving as backdrop. While the Metropolitan Opera (commonly referred to as The Met ) has been around since 1880, it has made its home at the Lincoln Center Metropolitan Opera House building it currently occupies since 1966.
