Of the course the productions at the Met are wonderful, with the latest presentation of Mephistophele no exception. However, the drinks and food at intermission are absurdly overpriced. $6 for a tiny plastic bottle of water that would cost $0.99 elsewhere. $15 for a cold, plastic-wrapped, sandwich. $8 for a chocolate chip cookie. And nary a surface anywhere to put down your $5 cup of drip coffee or $21 flute of Champagne. Sure, I get it, they re an arts organization and need to make money somehow. Still, I suspect they would actually make more money if they priced refreshments in the realm of sanity, which would encourage a greater number of people to buy something at intermissions.
