I have had pizza as good as this only in and within a relatively short driving distance of Chicago. The plentiful sauce is spiced perfectly and chunky and there is plenty of gooey cheese, with the spinach and mushrooms. Though I carried my order out, I recognized the atmosphere as very much like places close to my home, simple decor, a big vibrant crowd of friendly neighborhood family types mingling with students, the staff was friendly and efficient while seemingly moving at light speed. Located In Rockridge, near the BART station. IMHO, Zachary s is a pizza to go out of your way to obtain.

Definitely some of the best Chicago-style pizza I've had in the Bay. When I went, it looked like the wait would be long, but since they let you pre-order your pizza, everyone gets in and out pretty efficiently.

An East Bay Institution for deep dish pizza is known throughout the area. Super fast service, courteous. Sit-down or take-out available.
They also have a good selection of beers and other drinks, and can have parties.
Excellent location on College Avenue near Rockridge BART as well as a second location on Solano two of the major shopping districts for the East Bay.

If you are in Berkeley enjoy this pizza is totally different from the other Chicago style, the prices and attention are very good that yes for the quality sometimes stays very full But it is worth the wait.

Even a really small place in berkley it's really good pizza and always is crowded. Fulton service is excellent and it's worth the wait.

Better Chicago style pizza than you can get in Chicago. Although they don't deliver, you can buy a half-baked pizza to finish in the oven at home. They offer thin crust as well as deep dish, and their sauce is lusciously chunky with flavorful tomatoes. Truly excellent pizza.

Zach's has always had a cult'ish following. People wait outside in in inclement weather for pizza. Berkeley eateries take themselves seriously. Zachary's couldn't have lasted in this market for all these years if their food was subpar and here the bar is higher than you would suspect. Zach's is less antiestablishment than Blondies focusing more on value then volume, to your benefit. The ballance between large portions to feed broke college students and quality to satisfy the bourgeois Berkeley Rockridge locals is perfectly struck. Before Zach's opened a satellite east we would drive to Berkeley, passing 10 pizza places to get it. It never disappointed. Order deep dish, order early (45+ min) bring your appetite.

If you have not been you should.

If you have not been you should.

This is amazing pizza.... buuuuut..... something changed about a year ago. lve been enjoying zacharys, and sending all friends and random strangers coming from out of town, for 30 years. ... since I was 5 ok?
A year ago the slices got small. I mean, before if you ordered by the slice you got this monstrosity that could be easily sliced down center and made into 2 very long slices, or nibbled on secretly, and "fixed" at home , and cut into 2 normal sized ones... no more alas. The slices fit 2 to a box....... not right.

And something happened to the sauce.. I dunno. It seems overly salty...??

Aside that, it's employee owned, some stuff Is organic yay, and sourced locally (double yay ).... er.. and the cider is local and the f'ng sh!$! Booozie.

Oh and the worker/owner females are mostly hot and some used to drink at Gdubs.... but who knows in today's crazy world. .... haha I want a slice now.

The pizza here is good but really heavy. I Like the vegan cheese and wheat crust combo to make a fully vegan pizza. I just wish the slices of the "thin" crust pizza came out crisper. Even when I did a take and bake the pizza was soft and got soggy quickly. I'll stick to the cheese board for now unless I need a ultra filling pizza.

If you haven't had Zachary's pizza yet, call now and put in a pre-order, then get in the car and start driving. Then you can read the rest of this review, if you want. I first had Zachary's Chicago Pizza fifteen years ago as a kid--that pizza was so good like nothing I had ever had before, and the memory still is clear for me. Later, as car-less students at Berkeley, friends & I occasionally would trek out to Zachary's for a special occasion, or just when we REALLY wanted good deep dish pizza! After 10 years exiled in SoCal, I finally made a pilgrimage to the East Bay and of course Zachary's. I wanted the classic Spinach & Mushroom but the other half likes meat, so we got a Large Stuffed Carne to share for four normal adults. What a joy! I think we each ate a giant slice and a half, which left about two slices to take on the plane home. Even after all the years of pining, the memory held true and Zachary's Chicago Pizza still holds reign as #1 pizza for our family. A final word--the staff at the Oakland location took amazing care of us, and they all seemed like such genuinely good people. Wish I could eat with you guys every day.

The pizza was slightly overrated, but not horrible. There are better choices for Chicago style in the Bay Area. I feel like this one has a good rep because it s a local joint and has been a part of the community for decades.

We had the Zachary s Special... which wasn t that special. Oof. The undercrust was soggy, and very difficult to cut. The pizza itself came out lukewarm. Maybe it has been sitting for too long. Tomato sauce was pretty good.

When we think of top pizzas, especially deep dish,...

When we think of top pizzas, especially deep dish, Zachary's pizza is near or at the top of our list. The staple is they spinach and mushroom deep dish which is what we usually get. It takes about 30m to order a fresh pies as it's usually made to order.

This time around they offered to sell by the slice which was great for my family so we didn't have to wait or buy a whole pie. However it came out lukewarm so it's not going to be as good as if it were fresh. But i could tell the flavoring was still there.

Also bought a slice of the "thin" crust cheese slice. It's the same as a regular cut pizza in my book but I suppose it's "thin" compared to the deep dish. Not near as good and too salty for my taste. That's not their specialty here.

Brother and sister-in-law love this place. It's a great atmosphere and service was absolutely great. The pizzas were not really my style--we got the Mediterranean and it was too salty for me, and there was more sauce than I generally care for, but it's definitely worth trying for yourself.

I assume the good reviews are because this is local older pizza place. Im not sure if Chicago style is this much irrelevant to what any other kind of pizza tastes like... I don't like it! The chicken tastes old, the tomato sauce tastes ugly ( maybe this is what it should be like) and the dow is too thick and not fully cooked. I can see the line where the upper side is raw and only the bottom is cooked.
I also I had to wait about half an hour which is too much. Before opening it I asked them to do takeaway because I couldnt stay longer. If I tried it when I was still there I'd politely return it. Really not my taste, and it was $25 for a small one.

This place is amazing. It is famous for it's deep dish pizzas. I tried a couple and they were all great. The mushroom&spinach and Zach's special is what we always get. I add pineapples to both. For two people, I would recommend the small size. If you eat a lot, the medium size should be okay also.

Oakland s Zachary's Chicago Pizza on college has the best pizza. The two biggest problems with Zachary's Chicago Pizza are parking and wait time. There is a parking lot across the street, but I do not think we are supposed to park there. There really is much that can be done about wait time because it takes time to make great pizza.
