Great place to see monkeys bathing in a onsen. If you go there at a rainy day, I would recommend to rent shoes (5 min before the main entrance at the park). There you can also buy umbrellas or rain coats.

We did 1.5 km on foot, all uphill on foot .. Arrived at 16.50 .. they let us in safely .. and at 17.00 they close the park .. Also calling the monkeys (probably with food) .. The monkeys are not not wild at all .. !!
The place would be worth it .. But pay a full ticket for just 10 minutes to visit .. At least let it be known .. !! Too bad ..
Among other things, unkempt park .. Really little CARE ... considering that it is a JAPANESE park .. Leave a little dumbfounded ..

I arrived at a parking lot on a steep mountain road, and when I walked for about 15 minutes, there was a wildlife conservation area and a sign indicating that wild animals were appearing at the entrance of the park, but I was scared.

If you want to see snow monkeys this is the place to do it. They are a lot of them. Note that the snow monkeys only bath in the hot springs in the winter. Also they are some shops trying to sell you a lot of unneeded hiking gear at the beginning. The trail is no where near as bad as they try to make it out.

The child is cute. It was easy to go without snow, but it is a pity that nobody has taken a bath. After all I think that I will go to midwinter again even if I struggle.

Definitely worth visiting at least once in your life. Be careful though, because the way up really is a mountain path, so it's narrow and slippery (be it from ice or from mud).

The monkeys and their behaviour is amousing, so care free! Come early in the morning to avoid crowds. The walk to see the monkeys is just as nice as the destination.

Needless to say, the town of snow monkey. It's rare to see a wild monkey attacking or running away, and seeing it in a hot spring, but it's too common here. How did you come to believe in humans so much? It is a sight that you want to cherish.

Jigokudani Park

Who wants to watch wild monkeys in Onsen (hot water sources), is right here.
The Jigokudani Park is located in Nagano Prefecture and has a closed snow cover for about 4 months of the year.
In the photo you can see the base station of the valley and some representatives of the snow apes

I'm driving there then.
Small parking spaces are well signposted and nearby.
The remaining 2 kilometers then lead a trail through the forest ... you should be a bit afraid of heights and maybe not necessarily wearing flip-flops ... :-)

but withdraw in the dark in the woods.
I found this whole place very impressive ... whoever drives there should go
really treat the 3 - 4 hours, and look at that.

Perfect place for taking close look at monkeies. Highly recommended!

Great to see monkeys. There are no fences or so...you are surrounded by all the monkeys and don't worry...they don't mind you at all. The park is a little too small, I expected to get to walk a little more.

It's soothing to see the baby monkeys playing happily.

There are a lot of monkeys, and they are in groups to increase their production. About three hundred monkeys, about a hundred other monkeys. Not afraid of people, peaceful coexistence with mankind.

A great park. You can get real nice and close to the snow monkeys. Got to see a lot of monkeys. You only need about 30 mins in the park. Make sure to plan your trip accordingly.
Transportation: You can take the JR to Nagano and take a bus or Electric Train from there. The park is about a 30 mins walk on foot.

Well worth the effort to get here. Stay in a Ryokan in Yudanaka for a very Japanese experience. You might even get a free onsen! The monkeys are absolutely adorable playing in the snow and thermal baths.

There were more monkeys than I expected, and I was able to take as many photos as I wanted. The little monkey was so cute. There were foreigners. Since I went in summer, I couldn't see the monkeys entering the hot springs, but I was very happy.
Since the parking lot is a little walked, it may be a little difficult for older people or those with poor feet.

A wonderful place inside, a beautiful forest. Monkeys running around everywhere. It was a wonderful place to visit and I recommend everyone go if they get the chance. Monkeys in the snow is quite a sight.

This place is pretty cool! It is a hard place to get to but definitely worth the effort. You will see lots of monkeys in a semi wild environment. A nice experience for the whole family

A lovely walk through the forest from the entrance to the area where the monkeys hang out. Could be very snowy and or muddy at times, be sure to wear appropriate footwear.

Overcrowded at times. Monkeys are very tame and can thus be dangerous if you go too close. Do not take in any food or something that looks like food. Keep your personal belongings zipped up as the monkeys do pickpocket on occasion.

Dont have doubts like I did, no matter what time of year, this is definitely worth the trip!

Very nice park with many monkeys, which you can take great pictures of. The park is easily accessible on foot, it is best to go early in the morning. Dress warm and good shoes are recommended.

Touching and feeding are forbidden, but they are smiled by passing under their feet and grooming in front of their eyes.
Nearby Jigokudani Onsen seems to be able to take a bath from 12:00 noon.
2019.12.27 I walked a few kilometers from the parking lot, but there was not much difference in elevation, and the sidewalk was a moderately settled road.
On the day, there was no snow and the roads were wet, and my shoes were dirty, but on the 28th it might be snowy and easy to walk.

Enjoyed our trip there at end of Feb. Only 40-50 people up there which I hear is quite good for 11am. It exceeded my expectations. Can be muddy/snowy on the trail in winter. I enjoyed the 30min walk up there too. Fun watching the monkeys relaxing in the hot spring.

One kilometer from the toll parking lot, famous for monkeys, and two kilometers up from the free parking side, soak in the hot springs. I don't know if it's a foundation, but you should be able to interact with the monkeys a little more freely, rather than protecting the monkeys, with a loud attitude, not caution, but a command tone! If you want to appeal to nature, the entrance 800 yen will be overkill! But! ! Monkeys feel healed

A magic place. In the summer the monkeys won't go inside the hot spring but are likely to drink the water from it. For this reason the information centre may tell you that there are no monkeys but in reality there are always a lot around.

First and foremost, places like the Jigokudani Monkey park really show the difference between Japan and the USA. In the US, it would have cost 4 times as much and the monkeys would all be in the distance and behind protective glass. No way in the world could you literally walk around a wild monkey habitat and literally touch them (though seriously, dont) for a few hundred yen.

There are other monkey parks around japan, and they fit that description more. I heard someone mention the irony of being in another monkey park where the humans were encaged. I feel like this park is best experience to be "in-scene" in a native habitat.

needless to say, this is definitely something to experience and one of the highlights of my entire japan trip (along with our lovely stay at the Shimaya Ryokan in this area). photo and video opps galore! but seriously, dont get too comfortable with the monkeys: the are still WILD monkeys. For the most part this pretty much ignore you and go about their day, but if you get too close to some, and appear "threatening" they will swat at you angrily. we didnt expect that, and what i believe to be a "walker" on the bench starting our gave us fair warning early on! that was the only scary encounter but paved caution the rest of the time.

as mentioned, it is over a mile walk from the base of the entrance into the park where you pay admission and start really seeing the monkeys. We came on a warm sunny day in March, no snow to be found, and not many monkeys in the hot springs. The grounds keepers throw food into the hot springs to coerce them to jump into it. artificial activity, but you are paying for "entertainment" i suppose.

You really only need about an hour to get your fill of the place. I couldn't stop taking photos and videos though, it was truly a trip. I loved seeing all the babies running around playing and climbing on their backs to get around. its worth visiting the gift shop and buying one of the photo books with all the information on the monkeys, their history, and the tribes.

Very proud, so happy to see the big and small stables at close range.

Great place for a little hike to see the nature and of course cute monkeys. Ps. they have some toads in the lobby.

Awesome. Macaques are very well behaved. Best to get here early and start the walk up the hillside before the opening times (you can get tickets at the top) to avoid the crowds as tours start to arrive around 9:30 - 10:00am.

Worth the visit. Path to the park could be muddy during late winter, thus better to be prepared (boots) else you will have cold feet ;-)
The monkeys are relatively oblivious of humans, but do follow the park instructions (e.g. no plastic bags, no selfie sticks, how to hold your phone when taking photos.. etc)

good walk. best visit during winter or early spring to see the monkey in the water

I walk a distance of 1.6 km, but not much up and down. Many people are walking, but mostly foreigners.

Access to the monkeys costs money and you should first inquire whether monkeys are there before buying the tickets. Otherwise it's worth it. But you should be good on foot.

Wonderful trek and Mother Nature is beautiful there ! Here baby monkeys are so so cute and seem to be really happy ( ouf !): it is NOT a Zoo ! There are totally free to enjoy (or not !) the private Onsen ( ), and you are the host...! So be respectful and kind please...

Don't miss golden chance to get close to another being similar to human...

During our recent visit to Japan, visiting the snow monkeys was top of our list and we weren't disappointed. It's a 2km hike from the bus drop-off point up to the monkeys but it's such a lovely walk through the trees. Once there we could spend as much time watching the monkeys as we liked. Whilst only a couple were in the hot springs, there were still plenty around to keep us entertained. We came in mid-April and I'd definitely recommend wrapping up warm. Well worth a visit.

The snow scene is beautiful, but unfortunately there are no public toilets in the 1.6 kilometers in front of the park. It is the most inadequate public facilities in the attractions I have visited. Some tourists also disturb the residents on the mountain and secretly urinate.

You can see the monkey up close. It s a very fun space.

I went there to see the monkeys having a bath, but I was unlucky because wasn't cold enough for them to taste the water. Anyway is nice to see them around the hot pool, and drinking the water. I enjoy to see them. They are pretty close and they walk around the people.
The park itself isn't very nice. Is ugly, some construction rubbish around. They should had more care about it.

I expected to not see any monkeys because the day was kind of cloudy but right outside the entrance there was a monkey chilling on the roof. Was not disappointed. Took a nice photo too with my brother from another mother.

Going by the bus stop, with a 5-year-old child, it takes only one hour to walk one way. The road along the way is the mode of country parks. It is worth seeing.

Because it was not so cold, few monkeys entered the hot springs even when they came nearby. He hates getting wet.

Extremely valid tour for those passing through or near Nagano city. Monkeys accept humans nearby and act naturally. It's great to see them playing and interacting and having a lot of tourists. It is important to note that access by car or bus is to the park entrance, then there is another 25 minute walk through the woods to the hot spring, so come with proper shoes and clothing.
For those coming from Nagano Station, it is interesting to shop at the daily Free-Pass Station which frees the use of the bus to the onsen, the use of the Nagano Dentetsu Line, the bus that takes you from Yudanaka Station to the park and free admission to. the park.

It was really neat to see the monkeys but it was very crowded. Pretty easy hike.

Not so easy to get to which is a good thing. On your way, (1.6km along the edge of hills- wear spikes in winter as the warm earth tends to melt settling snow making it slippery ) you get to see other native Japanese wildlife especially birds. The experience as a whole is worth it. It is a natural park to expect to experience a whole lot of smells as well. Watch your step on that same note. Dont be scared if the monkeys come up to you or walk around you. There use to seeing alot of people, just DONT TOUCH THEM!

Walk about 40 minutes from the bus stop to the mountains. Since it was midwinter, I walked on the snowy road and fell three times, but it was really wonderful! The monkeys are in front of you! ! I am happy to see the monkeys in the hot springs. Even if you make a mistake in winter, don't go with heeled shoes. There seems to be a day-trip hot spring where people can enter just across the bridge just before the public entrance.

It was a far walk from the bus stop. The monkeys are super chill and the views are amazing. If you have a kid I highly recommended to bring a carrier of some type.

This is famous for hot spring monkeys. You are warned not to get too close to the monkey, but it is a force majeure for the approaching monkey, so if you sit still without moving, a nice close encounter will occur.
When a little monkey pulled a sleeve, I wanted to ask, "Will you come in?"

I can't explain how beautiful and peaceful is that place , it was really a good decision I made by visiting that spot.

You will need to hike about 2km on the snowy mountain, and then you will reach your destination, trees with ice on them is a really nice view also monkeys on some of these trees.
Monkeys are a little bit shy (Japanese) , so whenever you look at them they will always look the other side .

Great scenic walk out to the super surreal Onsen where you see Snow Moneys bathing, or relaxing near the onsen. Went in winter and it was freezing, had plenty of layer on and still could have done with more - HOWEVER, it was still absolutely incredible, very serene and very enjoyable.

The parking lot manager was so rude.
I approached the parking building to read the signs.
The monkey in front of the building threatens me,
I and the monkey were facing for more than 20 seconds.
Somehow I thought it would be a bite or a quill if I moved here.
The manager who looked at it clearly later stopped the monkeys and threatened me with monkeys

I would have really turned it over, but it was frustrating, but I just said I was sorry.
It was the most shitty experience of my trip to Japan.

Very fun place to visit. They feed the monkeys early in the morning and there are plenty to see. If it is cold enough, the monkeys will even relax in the hot springs
