A true highlight of our Japan trip. Get in early to enjoy a ~1 mile walk through the forest and still beat the mid-morning rush of visitors to capture some great lasting memories of this unique place. You'll leave wondering just how alike we are to these beautiful animals.

It s a great and very unique experience. Went during winter and it was incredibly scenic with snow in the background. The hike up in itself is already enjoyable if you bring a pair of good boots (or rent some at the shop) and it s not that cold, just dress accordingly.
The monkeys were adorable and we were able to get some close looks since the crowds weren t too bad in the morning.
I would suggest staying overnight in a cosy ryokan around Yudanaka, so the entire trip will be more relaxed.

Loved this place. Recommend starting your trek there from the visitor center around 20-30 minutes before they open. The trail was pretty muddy when I went so it may be a good idea to wear boots or rent them at the booth near the visitor center. Once you get into the park itself where most of the monkeys are, it is not a very large place, so take your time to enjoy!

We went in winter. Took a bus here from Nagano Station, so it was a 5-10 minute walk up the hill to the entrance of the park. There is a nice cafe along the way which is often packed.

Once you enter the park, it is an about 1.6km walk in to see the snow monkeys. It is a little bit uphill, but mostly flat. The only problem at the time was that the ground was very muddy, so our shoes got dirtied. You can rent shoes at the entrance of the park.

Once in, it may be very crowded and chilly as well. There may be crowds of people at one area taking photos of a group of monkeys, so find a good spot before snapping your photos.

However, the snow monkeys are very cute and it really depends on the person if he/she will find it worth the walk. I personally found it worth the walk.

Now it has become a very popular spot for foreigners, and there are more foreign tourists than Japanese tourists.

In winter, monkeys who enter hot springs are often seen, but in summer, it is hot, so there are monkeys who roam around the hot spring, and sometimes they enter the hot spring.

I really liked the place, it is more a natural reserve than a park. After all, the monkeys are wild animals and free to roam everywhere. You need to do a little trek (1.3km from what the sign said) on the mountain path. The path is large and nice but when I went (spring) mud was everywhere! I suggest you pack your trekking boots and be careful. Also there is only one spot to sit down on the way.
You'll know when you reach the park because the sulfur smell will hit you. And you will start to see monkeys everywhere.

Exactly what you would expect it to be: an opportunity to get up close and personal with the snow monkeys. It's great fun to watch them play and groom one another. It's nice that they can come and go as they please. It's was getting very busy as we made our way out, so it seems advisable to go early and avoid the crowds.

40 minute walk from bus is quite cold and icy and is along the side of a mountain so dress warm. Unfortunately, only need to spend an hour max at the actual park. The walk may be 80mins round trip, but it is pretty amazing in the snow.

Visit at the end of March. Not good without snow. At 11:00, there are no monkeys taking a bath. It was parked in the parking lot because it was free, but it may be difficult during peak hours. He says he won't do much autumn.

Very cool park. Quite a long hike into the snow monkey area but worth it. There are many monkeys enjoying the hot springs and you can take some great photos. At the base there is an excellent coffee shop with delicious coffee and apple pie.

It was the second time, but it is the best! There are some places where the snow freezes and there are some dangers, so please use shoes that are suitable for climbing or snow. It is my second visit and have to say loved every minute of it again :) !! The path was not cleaned and was very icy so definitely wear shoes for snow or hiking shoes.Definitely recommend :)

The park area is quite small and everything is very prepared for the monkeys to do what is expected of them. It is not that they are trained, and in fact it is advisable to be a little careful, but those responsible are responsible for food to be lowered and to be thrown into the water for bathing.
It is worth going first thing before the monkeys have arrived to see the descent they make on the hillside.
The visit should last between two and three hours as it requires a 20-minute walk from where the car is left to the park entrance.

Honestly speaking I didn t find this place very amusing except that I could find many monkeys in a pool of water!!. The infrastructure is not well organized or kept tidy. For me it was kind of waste of time.

Few inputs I would like to share here
- There is almost 30 minutes climb to reach to the place. The trail is muddy and slippery if it rains or snows. Carry your hiking boots and gears along to have a safe walk.
- There seems to be few places which emits sulfur dioxide gas. It may make asthma patients sick, so please take precautions.
- Parking can be crowded and if you are not lucky you might have to park bit far away from the spot and walk around 15 min to reach the hiking trail.
- As far as I am concerned, there were not very many good restaurants in and around the place, so plan accordingly.
- You are not allowed to carry Food or plastic while hiking. So make sure to secure those in your car or backpack.
