I have taken my grandkids many times to this place since they were little. It is a great place to walk around at a leisurely pace. The workers always explain about the birds while feeding them. Very educational and fun. Programs are great! Free but can donate!

This is a terrific place to take the kids for free. (Donations are appreciated.) Located on the road to Lone Elk park, the World Bird Sanctuary is one of only a few locations that takes in and rehabilitates injured birds. There are hiking trails, bird enclosures, a playground, a gift shop, and a hospital for injured birds. The staff does storytelling, keeper talks, and shows where you can see some of the birds up close.

A great place to go for free and spend a hour or two looking at and learning about the large birds of prey. Many of the birds are native to the local region, but they do have several from other parts of the world as well. In the visitors center/gift shop near the amphitheater they also have some other animals on display like tropical parrots, boa constrictors, rabbits, and turtles.

It is located right next to the entrance of Lone Elk Park and it is easy to visit both in a single trip of 2-3 hours.

Such a hidden gem in STL! Mostly outdoors with a few indoor enclosures. Small gravel on the main trail which could impede those with mobility restrictions.

They used to have a bird summer camp. It was my daughters all time favorite camp!

Very fun learning experience and lots of things to look at! Perfect for all ages, but little ones will especially love it. Very serene and lots of trees. Not only will you see the exhibits, but you also have multiple opportunities to observe the chipmunks, birds, & squirrels around the visitor's center. Highly recommend! They are donation-based, so if you love wildlife, you have a chance to chip in. With everything there is to see, there isn't a dull moment! Again, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We had an incredible time at the world bird sanctuary. All of the staff were extremely friendly, knowledgeable and wanted to ensure we had a great experience. We arrived around 9:30 a.m. and were able to see them take measurements on a bird as well as see a keeper feed most of the birds. Our 6 year old absolutely loved it! In addition to birds there is a great playground and an accessible walking trail. We will be back!

We love birds anyway so this was a lot of fun. These wonderful people rescue and care for these birds and use the opportunity to learn more about them and educate others. Great place for kids to see these beautiful birds where otherwise it would not be possible. There is a cute little gift shop where we found some cute little animals inside too.
The Sanctuary also hosts many events throughout the season such as, bird demos, educational events etc, and some sell out early.

My wife and I attended a 7p.m. Owl program. The staff member and volunteer presenting were friendly and knowledgeable. The hour long inside portion of the program included the display of several different types of owls with several "fly-overs". The outdoor portion was cut short due to rain, but both were wiling to stay with the audience as long as they had questions. I recommend this for young and old alike.

It's a lovely place. The outdoor birds appear to be happy to be residents of the facility. All of the volunteers with whom I have interacted are very friendly and seem to know what the hell they're doing. I highly recommend to everyone who adores birds a visit to this place.

The facility itself sits inside beautiful and serene forest with incredible natural scenery. The grounds themselves are clean with lots of seating areas, even an amphitheater, as well as a playground. There are dozens of gorgeous birds from all over the world there for various reasons. The staff there are passionate and friendly, and just being there is an amazing and educational experience. I will most definitely be returning.

This is usually a quiet place to see birds. You can tell the staff really care about the animals. They have a playground, shows, and a gift shop. It is right next to lone elk park so you can visit there when you leave as well

Wonderful for hiking and learning about birds at the same time. They've gotten more forward about asking for donations ($8 suggested per car) but I honestly don't mind for how great the animals are cared for and the fun I have here. I have several items from the gift shop too (owl coin purse, parrot mug, elephant face mask, snakes tee, long sleeved birds tee with all the avian residents of the sanctuary). It's not only for kids, as I don't have any and still really enjoy my time here.

Love this place. Many many kinds of birds who have all been rescued and given a good home. Many of them have the bird's story posted which my kids loved learning about. They also have Educators and educator Birds that will do learning events which my kids always enjoyed. Definitely nice place to go check out and best of all it's free.

We have been here many, many times. I am still shocked at how large Sea Eagles are. Take your children here there is a playground and live shows where they let eagles fly to perches on the risers. Very nice workers and miles of trails to walk through a ghost town where all that remains are foundations from the miners old homes

What a great place to visit. It's free, but I recommend you leave a donation because that's how they survive. Just beyond this place are bison and elk that you can see from your car as you drive through.

Good presentation about owls. Interesting collection of various birds of prey that you could get very near with no bars or glass to look through. Food vendor had a small but nice selection. Lovely setting in the woods. Close to St. Louis.

About World Bird Sanctuary

World Bird Sanctuary: A Haven for Birds of Prey

World Bird Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that provides a safe haven for birds of prey. Located on 305 acres of Missouri hardwood forest, the sanctuary is adjacent to Lone Elk County Park and the Chubb Trail. The sanctuary features free seasonal shows, nature trails, educational programs, and picnic pavilions.

The World Bird Sanctuary has been in operation since 1977 and has grown to become one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the United States. The sanctuary's mission is to preserve the earth's biological diversity and to secure the future of threatened bird species in their natural habitats.

The sanctuary's large outdoor avian exhibits provide housing for a variety of non-releasable birds. These birds are unable to survive in their natural habitats due to injuries or other disabilities. Visitors can observe these magnificent creatures up close as they soar through the air or perch on tree branches.

In addition to providing a home for non-releasable birds, World Bird Sanctuary also operates an on-site Wildlife Hospital where injured birds are rehabilitated before being released back into their natural habitats whenever possible.

The sanctuary offers educational programs that teach visitors about conservation efforts and how they can help protect endangered species. These programs include guided tours, classroom presentations, and hands-on activities that allow visitors to interact with live animals.

Visitors can also explore nature trails that wind through the forested areas surrounding the sanctuary. These trails offer opportunities for bird watching as well as glimpses of other wildlife such as deer, foxes, and raccoons.

For those looking for a unique venue for events such as weddings or corporate retreats, World Bird Sanctuary offers several picnic pavilions that can accommodate groups of various sizes. The serene surroundings provide an ideal backdrop for any occasion.

In conclusion, World Bird Sanctuary is not just another tourist attraction but rather an important institution dedicated to preserving our planet's biodiversity by providing shelter and care for injured or disabled birds while educating visitors about conservation efforts aimed at protecting endangered species worldwide. With its vast acreage filled with beautiful flora & fauna along with its knowledgeable staff who are passionate about what they do - this place truly stands out among others!
