Great store with multiple options (CDs, cassettes, DVDs, VHS tapes, vinyl, record players, and more). I love that you can try out record players to test records and the quality of the players.

No better place to find music here in Austin! Weather one's looking for local musicians or regional or major artist, they have an excellent selection of albums to find. In the back, there's also a large area for vinyls if one wants to spin the black circle :-)

There're a lot of reasons to be irritated at Austin.
The residents can be somewhat smug and seem to believe they invented weird.
The traffic in Austin is pretty awful, typical of a town that has grown too fast.
And like most of Texas, it's just too hot in Austin.
But the most irritating thing about Austin is Waterloo Records. It's the kind if record store every town wants, but somehow only Austin has.
I never fail to find twice as much as I can afford. It's why I drive 4 hours to shop there.
Jerks.

I've been going to Waterloo Records for almost 20 years. They have almost anything you could be looking for, usually in CD format. They almost certainly have the most comprehensive vinyl selection in town. They also sell record player needles and new turntables, which ensures there will be a next generation of vinyl collectors and lovers.

A must for music lovers. This place has vinyl CD s and even cassettes. The staff is not under the mistaken belief they are Rockstars, although there is a fair amount of musicians that work there . Music of all genres . Used new vinyl etc... ample parking. Great location. Great inshore performances

You may have a hard time finding popular older vinyls, but that is pretty much the case everywhere (I'm looking at you, Hot Fuss by the Killers - no, I will not pay $200 for you). Keep an eye out for their in-store events, the concerts are among the most intimate I've experienced AND you get free beer. Even bigger plus? Get your stuff autographed if you purchase it that same day - just show your receipt!

Awesome selection with a great enviroment. Not just music, but DVDs and Blu Ray too including a massive portion of the Criterion Collection. Prices are a bit steep for new records, but there are plenty of bargain bins and the like with real quality selections if you're tight on cash. My only real complaint is finding nearby parking, but that's not on them! Great shop!

This place is the real deal. They've got just about any piece of vinyl you could possibly want. Plus an absolutely amazing selection of old movies including all the cult classics you can imagine. Definitely a staple of the Austin experience and totally worth a check if you enjoy vintage movies, music, and more.

Sloppy! This store has become very sloppy with their customer service. I went to an in store signing of Meatloaf back on 8/4, for his new CD. It was great to meet him in person after all these years, and he could not have been nicer. The deal was, if you purchased his new CD in advance, you could get advance liner notes signed. The CD was to come out on 9/16, a Friday. Well, I drove down there after work, and was told, no, they don't have any in stock! Huh? 150-200 people in line, who paid in advance, and they didn't get the CD's in? They said to check back with them on the 20th, which was a Tuesday. So that meant for me, I had to drive back down town, make a special trip, all they way from Cedar Park. There were no apologies, no discounts offered to me, no nothing. They didn't seem to care one bit! Just sloppy guys, very, very sloppy. They were also supposed to have the new Led Zepplin 3 CD set of the BBC recordings in on Friday, but they didn't get them in either. So I ordered it on Amazon as soon as I got to the parking lot.

if you still purchase physical music and movies, then purchase them here. i believe it is more expensive than purchasing vinyl from end of an ear; however, i enjoy the live music in-store events. which is the only time i visit waterloo records.

whatever you do don't sell your records here! i knew i was in the wrong place when i asked him how much for my original pressed iggy pop funhouse (retail at $350-$400) and he had no idea and said somewhere around $30 with a blank stare... they basically offered about $2 for some five star records that would retail around $2500 and offered me $340. they told me it would be the next day before they would be done and then called me back in 3 hours and demanded i pick them after I told them I would not accept the offer. not expecting retail but not expecting insulting robbery either...

while it's not my favorite record store in austin (i prefer antone's and end of an ear because they cater a little better to my weirder tastes), it is a pretty centrally located mecca with a worthwhile and massive selection of commercial and underground music of all genres, neat t-shirts and worthwhile free in-store performances.

A staple of downtown Austin and music life. This place is just a treat for any media lover. Vast selection of new and used to find some items that many times can't be found online as well.

They hold am outdoor concert series during SXSW for free which is fantastic. During the year they offer sometimes indoor events for free as well.

If you enjoy collecting cds, records, or movies most defiantly check this place out.

great record shop and one that dates back to the early days of an up and coming austin. selection of vinyls is impressive but lacking in certain genre's. as a venue, it is always fun to catch a local or travelling band rocking out in the store.

Best record store in Austin. They have great used records and CDs. I love the instore concerts too. The people are great and I like that you can purchase hard tickets for concerts around town.

Lots of new records, hardly any used ones. I rarley see any outside of the New arrivals They do have a lot of Special Presses but they all have a cover made from glossy card stock and the LP is almost always clear, this has me wondering where they re even getting these from or if they make them themselves with them all being the same price. If you re starting out this is a good place, but it s not Ameoba that s for sure.

Generations change. Listening habits evolve. The way people buy and consume music never stays still. But the song... well the song remains the same much like Waterloo Records remains an epicenter of the "live music capital of the world" in Austin, TX.

After more than 30 years in business, countless album releases, intimate in-store performances, and what's evolved into one of the best free events in town during SXSW (talking of course about the outdoor parking lot shows with killer lineups), Waterloo Records has gone from a humble neighborhood record shop to a cultural institution - and while some might pine for the old days when the music wasn't compressed into digitally-rendered purgatory, plenty more will happily recognize that Waterloo is a record store that still values honest-to-goodness music discovery, the lost art of sifting through the used vinyl bin, and a staff always armed with quality recommendations.

You visit Waterloo records because you love music. You go back because they do too. And when people who love music get together, good things happen. Bands form. Friendships are forged. New sounds are heard. Old feelings are rekindled. That's Waterloo. Now go see, and hear it, for yourself.

Very helpful in selling a large quantity of DVDs from a friend's estate. I love visiting here and putting my hands on real physical media and seeing a vast selection of music with very knowledgeable staff (well, not so much about classical, but I buy that stuff online directly from the labels). I always feel like a kid in a candy store when I visit this place.

I'm visiting Austin and given the reputation I thought the record stores would be worth checking out. You won't be disappointed. The store is small, but they have some QUALITY!! I'm into metal and they a really nice selection to choose from. Too nice. I spent too much. And they had some artists that I've never seen records for in stores- like Rammstein. There's also a ton of CDs which surprised me a lot. The staff was really nice and chill as well. A pretty awesome little place and I'll have to stop by next time I'm in town!

I think too many Austinites take Waterloo Records for granted. We have all gone and purchased CDs and Vinyls here, but how often do we really visit it? I've discovered this after moving away to Manhattan two years ago. Since I came to Austin, I make sure to go once a week. Very friendly staff with solid picks and most impressive is that all seem to know who is playing in the week locally. Their selection is more than impressive and you can listen to anything in the store. I love checking out the Shiner TX Top 10 list. My favorite is their Vinyl happy hour. Every Tuesday from 7pm to 11pm, all records are 10% off. Support local businesses!!
