The Waltham YMCA is a pleasure to visit...it is very clean, the staff is friendly and it has an excellent array of exercise equipment. When my Needham YMCA was closed due to COVID, I began using the Waltham Y, and have continued to go there some, even though Needham has re-opened.

Great Gym love the free weights and everything it has. Only problems that arise is that the pool is a bit dirty but that is an easy fix another problem maybe it's personal is that the shower room is open which might get kids a little creeped out
I ve called and the person who answers the phone told me that there is open gym in the basketball court and 5 times I ve come to be kicked off of the basketball court. They are not concerned about the time of people who come here and the response I ve gotten each time I ve been kicked off after being told that the gym is open is sorry we didn t know there was a birthday party or some other response as if they couldn t have checked to tell me over the phone, they are inconsiderate and have wasted my time on multiple occasions.
Update: young Y worker just shouted through the Y that a 5-year old [and yelled her entire name] was left by her grandmother at the Y. If I wanted to kidnap [insert kids name], I could walk to the counter right now and say, "I'm here to pickup [kid]. She's five." and these juvenile reps would probably let her go. NOT COOL. End Update 06/07/18 I love the YMCA OVERALL, but this Y is subpar, especially related to neighboring Y's. The only reason I'm not cancelling my membership during the 30 day trial is because of the other Ys. I've been to Salem, Greater Boston, West suburban, and they've all been impressive, even without extra amenities like hot tubs. This Y has a hot tub, but it can be randomly and inexplicably closed after you've battled traffic for 45 minutes thinking about the tub. No one here seems to know what customer service is. They can't replace the machine wipe-down towels without a maintenance person. They don't enforce any rules (cameras and phones used in the bathroom; people with rashes all over their body using the hot tub and doing veritable yoga in it; music with offensive lyrics on the building's system. etc.). Hot tub water is SUPER chlorinated (should be brominated) and burns eyes from just being in it. They have HUGE speed bumps that will destroy your car if you're not SUPER careful, and HUGE crowds in a hurry that ride your butt all the way out to the road. The daycare looks good. The showers and men's locker looks like it goes all day without a cleaning. Walls are stained. Tissues, dust, and discarded things in lockers. Where this Y is good, they do well, but on everything else requiring a modicum of attention, effort, or enforcement, they fall down, I suspect because the staff is so young and inexperienced. I even submitted an application to volunteer and never heard from them (and don't really trust that my private information isn't sitting on a desk somewhere in the open). The Away at the Y program makes membership worth it, though.
My wife and I toured the daycare in January. Our baby is to be born in June, and we were looking for October enrollment. They assured us they would have a spot, but enrollment would not start until April. They took our information and assured us that they would contact us when enrollment opened. We called a handful of times throughout April, and they kept informing us that enrollment was not open, and seemed annoyed at our calls. Finally, today, 5/11/19, my wife called and was informed that there are no open spots. They never called us to inform us enrollment was open or that there were no spots open. A terrible experience that leaves us searching for a daycare.
Staff is very nice, the gym is kept clean and has a lot of machines. The pool is great though it gets full pretty fast when the outside pool closes for the winter. There is a sauna and steamroom in the locker rooms and a jacuzzi by the pool.
Great organization with a great mission. This branch has plenty of classes, machines and two large pools indoor and out. The grounds are a little small so outdoor activities are more limited for kids camps. Small archery range and no climbing wall for example.
I go to this Y all the time to use the gym areas and swim in the pool. Overall, my experiences are good. Once in a while there are other patrons who ignore the policies or are rude ... but I think you find that everywhere. Some of the young lifeguards that monitor the pool are fine, and others have no work ethic and are very unprofessional. My most aggravating incident was when I was kicked out of a designated lap lane so that one kid could get her swim lesson ... this, when there was an uncrowded open swim area with about 3 people in it. That lifeguard was very rude to me and used poor judgement. Why does one kid need a whole lap lane for her swim lesson? Not a good day! But all in all, if I time my swims right, they are mostly fine. This is definitely my Y of choice.
The infrastructure of Waltham YMCA is appreciable with huge Cardio room, weights room, studios for latin zumba, Y-pump, cycling, mixed fit and other varieties of group excercises. Waltham YMCA also has a huge outdoor and indoor swimming pools. Well maintained and thoroughly trained staff. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Another plus is that there is a babywatch section with spacious colorfully decorated area with two to three babywatchers while you burn your calories. Waltham YMCA always keeps me motivated to do my regular workout even after a long day. It revives me from inside.
Don't go to this YMCA for youth class! They can cancel your class at their will and you lose your money. I registered my two kids for basketball clinic over the summer. They cancelled the last session without any reason. I didn't even get notification! I only found it out when I arrived. I contacted them several times and it was hard to reach the manager. At the end, they said they could only offer credit but not refund. That means I have to buy another session or membership to be able to use their credit. I rather lose the credit than to deal with them anymore!
Also, their system kept charging me $77/month for 3 more months after I completed the membership cancellation! I found these charges on my credit card statement and had to call in to get money back. Be careful with this business!
pretty disappointing bathroom, very unsanitary. The pool is kind of unsanitary too, also crowded, but other than that the pool is fine. You get what you payed for, nice programs, but for me the day camp is very bad. Staff is . The showers for boys doesn't even have curtains. Overall, the YMCA is your below average, workout place.
Has everything a person could want in a gym like basketball, an indoor and outdoor pool, exercise classes, a steam room, kids care, weight room, spin room and jacuzzi. Staff are friendly. Lots of open gym time for adults to play basketball. Good basketball leagues here throughout the year.
Reliable, friendly, and caring after school staff and program coordinated with Waltham public schools. Every time the program is at the actual ymca I have had nothing but good experiences- they host activities and events on weekends for the kids.
This YMCA is nice but a bit run down and could use a thorough remodel, particularly in the locker rooms. It looks like at least part of the shower area is scheduled for a remodel starting in February 2020.
If you are looking for a place to swim, this isn t fancy, but it s perfectly adequate.
The staff and other patrons were helpful and friendly. I mention this because obviously some reviewers have not had the same positive experience.
A friendly staff member gave me a tour and sparked my interest in joining the YMCA. I like how social the "Y" is. You can join in on any game on the basketball court. I love the free weights and the cardio room. It's nice to have the baby sitting room in the center of the building with all windows so you can clearly see how the babies are being treated which is with love and care. (They are so cute by the way.) The swimming pool is awesome and with some of the water classes they have to offer makes it more enjoyable. There are so many different kinds of classes available, name it and they most likely have it. My favorite overall, after a intensive work out, I enjoy what I call the spa, which includes the sauna, steam room and the jaquzzi. It's nice to relax after working out. And they have showers for after which is ideal. Join the YMCA, there are many gyms out there but I like how the "Y" has some much more to offer. If you join they give you two free sessions with a personal trainer. What more of an incentive do you need to join.
1.My daughter is enrolled in toddler program, but the management send her to preschool since they have more children in toddler class. We mentioned multiple times not to send her to preschool. But the management over the center is negligent. Without any prior intimation they use to change her to preschool. No consistency in the classrooms. They will not think about the kid. 2. There is no proper note on her daily activities. 3. The teacher with whom she is with is not aware of what she eats. 4. All the food which i packed for her is left in her bag. 5. The crib sheet and blanket were left in an unclean place.
We are loving our new programs. My 8 year old daughter just started with private swim lessons and with Sunday youth soccer. It s safe, not crowded and we love the diversity!!!
I ADORE those whom work for the Waltham YMCA. Every time you enter your always greeted by the staff and when you leave they wish you a good day. It's a great way to start your workout/day. The machines all have big touch screans with choice of TV. Everything is clean except the bathrooms. I certainly wish for the price we pay to have even half decent showers/sinks...I'm afraid of athletes foot everytime I change..not cool :(
Meh. Pool probably needs better sanitary maintenance. It was murky and had hair floating in it and a strong chloramine smell (due to swimmers not showering or too many little kids peeing in it.) Rest of facility seemed OK. They should get rid of the prison-style cinderblock walls though... It's not the 70's anymore.
I'm really happy with the YMCA. Overall I think they're a great org and give a lot to the community. Pre-COVID I enjoyed using the Waltham gym/workout area. We've loved their pool and their 2020-2021 Learning Center has been wonderful for our 5 year old. So I definitely recommend them and appreciate them, not just as a place, but they feel like an important part of the Waltham community as a whole, too.
Pretty nice gym, you pay $85 for 2 people if you're 30 or older. I'm not aware of a lower charge if you make less than $37K/yr. This Y offers a lot of interesting classes (e.g. barre and Bollywood dancing), and they have both an indoor and outdoor pool. I love the outdoor pool, although both changing areas could use a deep, scrubbed cleaning. There's also a separate studio for yoga, and the kids daycare is popular. The parents' night out events (where you drop your kid for 3+ hrs on a weeknight and go on a date) are really appealing, too. I love the free weights, quality weight machines, and the TVs on every cardio machine, too.
This is a good fitness center with complete facilities and complete staff. The attitude of the staff is also very good. Unfortunately, the water in the swimming pool is sometimes turbid.
