If I could give no stars I would. The Virginia Beach Jail treats their inmates like animals. All of the staff and officers give little to no help when you call for information. I have been hung up on by the sheriffs office and been left on hold for 45 minutes by the visitation center until eventually having them hang up on me too. I never usually leave reviews but after today I felt it necessary. I had a visit canceled on Monday because their visitation machines were down, so I moved it to Wednesday. Today I looked at my account and saw my visit was again cancelled. When I called visitation and asked why they told me their machines were still down and wouldn't be working for a WEEK. If I hadn't checked my account I would have drove 30 minutes to the courthouse just to get turned away cause they can't bother to call and let people know. This wouldn't be an issue and people would be able to see their loved ones without technological issues if they allowed people to visit in person instead of over a computer screen. This is where our tax dollars are going. And it's absolutely ridiculous.
Sure it's jail... but the way that they release inmates is despicable.
My friend was released a day early and unable to notify anyone in her group scheduled to pick her up the following night of the change. She was dismissed at midnight, in freezing temps (with no jacket), no cash, no phone, no phone-call... nothing. She was quickly kicked out of a local 24/7 grocery store for loitering after begging strangers to use a phone to make a call since payphones are non existent these days and the ones at your property have been removed.
How about when we release people we give them some sort of chance at success in their first moments instead of depriving them even more. At least call a taxi for them after taking all of their cash for Jail Fees while staying there....
They are caring group of guidance and protect. The justice system wouldn t function if not for the time and dedication the service of the departments women, men, to the men and women in the correctional system.

I have done collectively 3.5 out of the last 6 years of my life in this facility. To say the least, it is absolutely gross, filthy, the staff is either extremely lazy & disrespectful, the jail is run by the inmates especially when it comes to classification, deputies for sure play favorites, and canteen is through the roof and if you do not have people with money supporting you, you are SOL for sure.
I'm very disappointed in the Sherrifs Office, the City of Virginia Beach and the State of Virginia for the abuses it allows of the friends and family of inmates. Why do you make friends and family have to pay for basic living conditions?
The services offered by the Sherrifs department are poor, but the fact that they hold friends and family hostage over the conditions offered to inmates is criminal. All of the communications, food, clothing and miscellaneous services offered are thru outsourced companies that pay kickbacks to the city and charge ridiculous fees to friends and family. The websites are terrible, always have glitches, and often aren't functioning. There is no mechanism for registering a problem or making a complaint. The delivery process is 50+ years out of date. What is the justification for punishing friends and family of inmates? They are often victims too!
City officials should be ashamed and should be brought up on criminals charges themselves.
It's even worse for the people without friends and family for the city to blackmail. These people suffer suffer thru very poor conditions with no help.
They seem to "lose paperwork" often , of course they wouldn't care to move urgently to release the inmate when they're getting paid to have them there. A petition will be initiated very soon :)
I have to agree with the posting its sad, they have all those inmates making money of them and can't upgrade their system, can't visit your love ones in person only by video thats sad, and schedule visits , people are being locked up for anything just sitting in jail someone needs to do something thats why the jail is overcrowded so many cases over looked and they never answer the phone in the visitation department ts crazy I stayed on hold from Chesapeake traveling all the way to the courthouse I decided I had to go in person just to schedule a list and ask questions, they do need to be investigated on how they treat inmates I know they committed crimes and their are consequences however they are human and some of the inmates do face mental health issues that need to attentive to and protected , no reason people should be raped beat up what are the guards doing, you wonder and after reading review maybe some of the employees need to be investigated I read some are perverts crazy don't know how true it is but something needs to be done the system suppose to rehabilitate they making things worse to me and I'm tired of paying my tax dollars I have visited other jails and they are no way like va beach beach out dated and what do they do to help the ones who wanna help them selves I'm praying and I hope others are to , visits are canceled due to computers down what considerations they have for others who travel long distance none they don't even have a back up a lady came from Kentucky and couldn't visit her loved one how sad and they didn't do nothing

Listen, some people.here are complaining it is overcrowded, or their son was on suicide watch. Get over it. Jail sucks, that's what it's for. However, as rich as va beach is, they DO need to expand to accommodate the number of inmates. Sleeping on the concrete floor is awful. But th e number one legitimate complaint that can be made about this place is their lack of proper nutrition. Not quality of food, quanitity. They don't even provide 3 hot meals a day. The sherif cut back on every expense possible. This is one of the worst jails in Hampton Roads by far. If you have no outside financial support you will starve in this place, causing inmates to do illegal activities to hustle up extra soups or crackers or whatever it is just so they aren't hurting from hunger. DOC requires more than va bea ch jail provides, and when doc inspectors come thru for those few days living conditions, primarily food, is much improved.
If I could give this jail zero stars that would be it. Worms in the food. Prisoners have not been outside for over one year. Prisoners pay 1.00 per day to eat days old food. Profit maker but that's Americas Prison system set up Va Beach Jail is just part of the system that is draining the families of the prisoners. HAVE MERCY
Va Beach get 0 stars. How can you not have visitation at all? not because of the inmates acting out, but because of your systems being down. They act like they are a high security prison that hold dangerous serial killers that will never see the streets again when its JUST a city jail. When you call to ask any questions you may have about anything not just visitation you get the run around. This jail is the worst!

This jail is very much rude and the staff is very rude and nasty and don't know how to talk to people.
While I don't care for the fact that my husband is currently incarcerated, I can't blame the officers or the judge for doing their jobs. I also have to say that each time I contact the Sheriff's Office with a question since I live out of state and I'm not familiar with all the procedures, each person I have spoke with has been very polite and pleasant. They have answered all my questions, gave me information I needed and never once have they been rude to me. Thank you Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office for making a very difficult time a little more bearable.

My son was transferred here 4 days ago, he is diagnosed with Depression and has NOT received any medication since Monday. Has not met with his public defender and missed his bond hearing.
at one time one of the worst run facilities in Va ..overcrowded and poor classification process..all you halfwits crowing about "its jail,its not supposed to be pleasant "youre partially right..BUT..you dont put the guy or gal that had an extra glass on wine with dinner(then was pulled over) in the same area with armed robbers,rapists and hard core drug dealers or unidentified gang members (no prison or street gang task forces is available) overcrowding is abysmal .The sheriff has taken over the kitchen,the canteen and just about every other profit driven program..They now serve (delivered to your block) hot food is you or your family can afford it..obviously causes problems with inmates (for whatever reason) have NOTHING and or NO ONE on the outside looking out for them..and with whatever the price per day fee,the last thing they do is walk you down to the accounting office and hand you a bill.which is fine for some..The others with NO support structure upon release are saddled with the accumulation of their debt upon release..DEBT,NO job programs upon release,no after release support system to insure a lower rate of repeat offenders...the person that has NOTHING but a bill upon release will go back to doing what he or she did BEFORE their arrest.Human nature is to do whatever needs to be done in order to survive.NO JOBS?! They will go right back to selling drugs or stealing to eat and shelter themselves..abolishing parole sounds good to short sighted people that cant see past their own lives but in reality it has insured overcrowding and the previously mentioned mixing of Violent inmates and NON violent inmates(both with nothing to aim for).OH..also the sheriff has seen fit to sell e ciggs//all the profit was supposed to go back into the facility to fund some of the above mentioned programs..it DID /DOES not..gave themselves pay raises and hired more deputies.a few things might seem better to the Inmate that has the support system (and the money) to do their time in semi luxury but those that dont..react with resentment..so..YES,,,jail is supposed to be unpleasant..FOR EVERYBODY...Not just for the ones that cant afford luxury items.alternative sentencing for non Violent offenders,a larger substance abuse program,parole and LOTS of community service is the answer..let em work off their fines (all of them) and get them cleaning up the city.lots of low income areas that have elderly citizens that can no longer afford,or are capable of caring for their yards,..Highways,streets,snow removal in winter..there is plenty for NON violent inmates to do...Virginia inmate advocate Russell L.Gitlitz (and former inmate at one time)
My son is currently in the Virginia Beach Jail and has been since the 18th of December for a failure to appear for a DWI. That's horrible but he turned himself in to do the right thing.. His first night in Jail he was made to take off all of his clothes with 4 other inmates and for over 24 hours stay in a pod together with only a sheet and a guard watching them the entire time. He then was put into a pod that sleeps 2 but has 3 men in it, there are only 2 beds and he sleeps on the floor. He is sore and very tierd he cannot get comfortable enough to sleep of course. He tries to ask the deputies questions and they look tight through him. He didn't not hurt anyone he does not deserve to be treated this way. This is absolutely unacceptable and something needs to be done about this.
Called to ask for a civil standby and they recommended calling a lawyer. Absolutely ridiculous. Perform your duties.

I probably would have given them 2 stars but no one ever answers the phone. Then when they do answer they can't do anything. Medical treatment sketchy at best if inmates can ever even get treatment. If someone attacks an inmate, the inmate who was attacked also gets thrown in the hole. Again with no treatment for their injuries. Animals are treated better than the inmates at this facility. And not to leave out, there are not enough beds so many inmates have to sleep on the floor. Who are these people??? Apparently the jail is an entity unto itself and answers to no one. There is a reason someone is in jail, but they are still human and should be treated that way!
During my time as a trustee in your jail I worked in many parts of said facility. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A LACK OF INTEGRITY AS IVE SEEN IN YOUR OFFICERS. There was a man on full restraints in medical isolation. Granted he was being released back into society mentally disturbed hungry and angry. When I asked the officers if they release him in hand cuffs then slam the door behind him. The officers laughed and joked with me saying that they didn't know the exact procedure and they would ask a superior. Serious lack of integrity. They just cycle these mental ill folks in and out of this facility. Oh and don't let the federal government find out about C3F where they store the mentally ill as if they are cattle.
my sister has been in and out of this facility for several years...basically her home...whenever I call to find out information on a new charge of hers, I have always been treated with courtousy...also, when my family and myself would send her money, she was able to get special sandwiches...jails do not have to do that! they go out of their way to make these criminals feel at home...so I suggest that the people complaining on here, to do your homework..also, my family nor I support these sandwiches and other commissary moneys...due to if you continue to do such, you are only enabling the person incarcerated....basically giving them a pat on the back for being bad I used to send her cards ...sometimes 4 per week...but after years of doing this...and she continues to be a bad girl..well, what's the point?!?!? main point here, is that VA Beach jail is one of the best jails my sister has been to, as she thinks it's a hotel...seriously....and they always go out of their way to give me information that has to do with my sister...always very kind. Ok so yes these people have either been accused or convicted of a crime but even they deserve to be treated like a human being not an animal. People made to sleep on the cold concrete floor price gouging indifferent uncaring guards and even some making cruel unsolicited remarks. I'll be damned if I keep my mouth shut on this. First thing Monday morning I'm going to be on the phone to the ACLU asking for help leveling a lawsuit against them.

My brother was supposed to be realized on Wednesday April 22,2015. Ironically they screwed up some paper work. We called up there to ask the status, they tell us he has only been in there since April 13,2015 mind you he has been in there since Nov. 15, 2014.... how do u cheat somebody out of all that time. So we finally get to the bottom of things and we came to the conclusion that the people in the records department are LAZY and they have no sense of urgency. Something needs to be done and they need to be under investigation. When I was speaking to my brother about the situation, apparently, they have been doing this to several other inmates. SMH Where are our tax dollars going???? the commonwealth not a good place to get in trouble lesson learned for everybody
I would of gave no star or half star but in order to put my opinion in I had to atleast put1star which is bogus, I think the pink room is inhumane and Va Beach is the only place that does that not only that but they just throw inmates right in any block without be medically cleared, they don't do the delice stuff and make you shower, what they do is give you a(TB)shot and come check it a couple days later... That's not fair to other inmates! When I had to do an 18 month bid I came in 10 day's after a very bad accident and surgery on my kelious(heel) that I broke and surgery on knee and had lost all my hearing in right ear, no feeling under jawline down my neck and I had a frontal lobe injury to my brain... They take me in on crutches, completely screwed up in every aspect of my body at this time and I can barely walk on these crutches because they wouldn't let me put padding on the crutches which hurt my under arms badly and I had a big black boot with my leg in a splint so I could barely walk and mind you I was coming off all my pain management medication so I was in pain that is indescribable and withdrawaling from all my medication that could of killed me!!! I could not do anything for myself, couldn't get my tray, or my canteen and anything getting in or out of the shower and I thank God for the wonderful women that really helped me through that and what's sad is that they totally neglected to do wound change on me and then it got infected and I was thinking about how dirty and the black mold I was going to lose my leg and heel, when they took me to outside medical twice they didn't do anything my doctor told them to do and the medication that they gave to the deputies that transported me back and forth all the paperwork from their office to go back and given to medical in the jail but nothing was ever done except for 1 morning they called me for physical therapy and when I went down we discussed what happened and the asked me to do a couple thing's and then gave me my physical therapy paperwork and I was never called again and I taught myself how to walk again with the help of the wonderful ladies to help me with doing the physical therapy the paperwork said and I got through the time but because of lack of care and neglecting to get me healed properly, I now need a second surgery that I can't afford!!! Also 2 trays a day and 2 sandwiches in between isn't right the food is all carbs and God only knows what else! We could talk about alot but let me handle1thing at a time... But does anyone think they see a lawsuit in my future???
All of these one star reviews, from people who are upset about the jail. Here's an idea, look at the root of the problem...you. Don't want to have these problems, don't break the law. Have some responsibility and accountability for yourselves and quit pointing the finger at everyone else for your problems. Life is all about the choices you make.
