Unreliable. They have had no record of scheduled rides, so we've missed appointments. They have also shown up on days when we haven't scheduled anything. It is unfortunate that they are the only paid transportation option in Elkhorn.

At 2:08p on Jan 4, I set up my 1st ever ride to Walmart for Jan 5 at noon with return home at 12:30p, explained I just needed to pick up several liters of medicine, electrolytes, I forgot the day before. I also explained my disability accomodation needs and the woman assured me if the VIP vehicle was other than a minivan, she'D explain I'D need to go up in the wheelchair lift. I didn't think to remember her name, as I assumed she would do her job correctly.
When I was picked up on Jan 5 at noon, the driver demanded money before we even left. I founD that to be a bit rude. I gave her $2 and poured some change into my hand intending to give her dimes when she snapped, "Don't give me pennies!" It immediately made me uncomfortable, and we handn't even left yet. I calmly said, "I'm not going to give you pennies." Then I asked if she was picking me up from Walmart. She said I was going to Walgreens. I said my OTC medicine is only at Walmart. So she had to contact the dis patcher and my pick up driver, Lester. She even told Lester I'D be at McD's side. When done at 12:20p, I wheeled my cart to the front windows and saw a VIP van parked in far corner of lot near entrance from Hwy 120, and a KENOSHA public Transport van near McD's side. So I sat inside on bench and at 12:30p actually stood outside front waiting for my ride. What I thought was Kenosha van, was now VIP van, but county name was not on front so I didnt walk to it. I stood out front in the bitter cold thinking the driver would be on time. At 12:35p I called VIP to see if driver was running late, she put me on hold, I thought to contact driver, but she didn't. Then said my pick up is at 12:45. So I stood inside 10 more minutes, with the VIP driver RIGHT THERE thinking it was still the Kenosha van. Then at 12:45 the driver walked towards me and asked my name and we discussed the mixup. I asked if he was told about my disability accomodation, my difficulty with stairs. He said he was not. My first ride VIP got wrong the destination, the pick up time, and COMPLETELY IGNORED MY REASONABLE ACCOMODATION REQUEST. Going without meds would've been less stressful than this.

I'm the guardian for a young man with a host of disabilities who has worked for VIP for 10 years, and I'm a pretty tough critic. While there has been tough sledding at times, due to his extreme variability in functioning and brain health, we have found the VIP Services staff to be committed and in it for the long haul. There are issues that more funding could fix (ie., staff turnover) but that is the bane of every program like this. I've watched this young man obtain work skills and the pride of making money (he's very money-motivated!). The community embraces VIP, offering job placements to those doing well in training. FYI--this young man had chest pains yesterday and staff accompanied him in the ambulance and stayed with him throughout the ordeal--helping him to understand the process while advocating for him. Special shoutout to Kim B., Drea, and Dana K. for being there for him with incredible patience and caring.
