A bit crowded by shelves but it does have some items you can't find elsewhere like chung king chow mein in cans that we haven't seen in years. It has a lot of stock and produce is good but just a bit narrow in the aisles.

On the pricey side, and the store is always very cold. The butcher can cut good meat but is expensive. Overall, where else are you going to go? It's a good place to shop for fresh produce and the such.

Pricing has improved slightly with new owners but many products are regularly unavailable. I would estimate on about 50% of the time I can find the meat product i am looking for. I try and buy most of our groceries out of town, not because of the price/selection but the gospel music and kids art from Christian learning week at school (but no other religions) make me feel unwelcome and I would rather support an inclusive business.

They're convenient for being located right downtown but with there closest competition being 30min away there prices are higher. The Staff is friendly and will help you find anything you're looking for if they have it.

Had to go in three times to get what I needed for dinner (thanks to an absent-minded cook) so I had lots of time to assess this store! It was nice and clean with very nice produce, shelves were well stocked, floor associates very helpful asking if I needed help finding anything!

The cashier I went thru the first two times was very friendly and efficient and I breezed right through the line up. She also knew how to properly pack grocery bags!!!

When I went back for the third time in 10min, the line ups were 5-6 people deep, but another associate quickly jumped on cash and I was through in a flash again! Kudos, Valu Mart! Great job!!

Friendly place to shop. I work in Deep River every month for just one day and make sure to shop here. It's the only place I've found where I can buy paneer in the whole Ottawa valley (outside Ottawa)!

Overpriced on every item by about $2.00 and I frequently find that items I routinely buy are out of stock. I shop elsewhere when I have the opportunity for better prices. However; the staff are excellent and extremely friendly.

Isolation Chronicles: Part Six

Isolation Chronicles: Part Six

My mom lives in rural Ontario approximately 3 hours north of Ottawa (where we live, feeling helpless to help her with what she needed). She is in isolation, as are we, and doesn't have the luxury of many stores nearby (none in fact, closest being about 30 min away). Groceries under the best of times are a thought-out event for Mom, let alone during a pandemic!

With bad asthma, we didn't want her to go out needlessly even for necessities. I contacted Jan's Valumart to see if there was anything they could do.

They responded within minutes of my request, professionally and efficiently. The store was well stocked and had almost everything Mom needed AND they delivered to her (30 minutes away!) Contactless! Less than a few days later. WOW .. talk about taking care of your community.

It was easy to pay with credit card over the phone, and her and her team were wonderful to deal with. Unsung heroes during these times of need.

I was astonished by the care and attention given to my request. Thank you, Jan!

Picked up cooked wedges at the deli department at 5pm today, which were, as is often the case, rock hard (as if they were cooked hours ago) without almost any actual potatoe in them (i e. Just hard fried shells of oil). I wanted to purchase a bbq'ed chicken from the deli as well, but, as is almost always the case, they were sold out. Knowing they would likely be sold out, I tried calling the store several times between 4 and 4:30 to reserve one, but no one answered the phone. Any grocery store in a city that routinely had this pitiful selection of dinner food available at 5pm would go out of business in weeks. And don't get me started with the produce section that is routinely completely out of stock of several fruits and vegetables, and rarely has any bananas that aren't completely green.

Good

Always sold out of things on sale. They also list things for sale that are not actually on sale (example: they have had No Name peanut butter "on sale" for 3 months now but its the same price as they have always been so its not truthful. They just put the sale label on to move more products)
