A bit crowded by shelves but it does have some items you can't find elsewhere like chung king chow mein in cans that we haven't seen in years. It has a lot of stock and produce is good but just a bit narrow in the aisles.
They had everything I need. The staff are very good.
Things are getting pretty expensive so I try to stay away
Fresh produce, very good selection of other food, earn and redeem PC points.
On the pricey side, and the store is always very cold. The butcher can cut good meat but is expensive. Overall, where else are you going to go? It's a good place to shop for fresh produce and the such.
Clean store, friendly professional staff who are always helpful.
Pricing has improved slightly with new owners but many products are regularly unavailable. I would estimate on about 50% of the time I can find the meat product i am looking for. I try and buy most of our groceries out of town, not because of the price/selection but the gospel music and kids art from Christian learning week at school (but no other religions) make me feel unwelcome and I would rather support an inclusive business.
Best produce around. Always vlean and a great butcher.
Good sized store, fresh produce, decent selection of meat. Under new ownership. They are slowly converting me from Giant Tiger.
Decent. Not cheap but besides the small grocery section in Giant Tiger, what are you going to do?
Nice grocery store. A little small but well laid out.
Good store, lots of friendly staff and good selection for a small town.
However, it would be nice if the employees would follow the directional arrows that are laid out right now
Jan's continues to improve it's setup. Servers are great.
Very kind attentive staff. Found a number of items on the shelves that were about to expire.
Dear valu mart... Your Ice cream fridge is alittle ice hairy. Kids love poking the Ice off. Good prices and usually friendly staff. It's clean and fresh.
Its a good store with lots of choice but the prices for meat are sky high. Its sister store 15 minutes down the highway (Independant) has almost half the prices for meat it seems.
For a small town, this store probably works as a life line. All grocery items along with many other things are available. Staff is very humble and helpful.
Very expensive for a grocery store. Quality is good but I'd rather drive to petawawa or pembroke, so I can get more for my money
Solid an employee helped fight a rat in the seafood section
Definitely going again for the brave employees!
Amazing variety for a small town grocery store but you pay top dollar for the selection. If you only buy sale items then it's good.
Great store always bringing in new stuff for customers to try, friendly helpful staff.
Such a nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Organized and clean! Didn't get to meet Jan, but her staff was very accommodating. Thanx Jan for running such a nice store.
They're convenient for being located right downtown but with there closest competition being 30min away there prices are higher. The Staff is friendly and will help you find anything you're looking for if they have it.
Produce is always fresh. Alot of choices for brand names
Wasnt expecting this many gluten free options in a small town, will be happy to get groceries here again instead of bringing some from elsewhere.
Had to go in three times to get what I needed for dinner (thanks to an absent-minded cook) so I had lots of time to assess this store! It was nice and clean with very nice produce, shelves were well stocked, floor associates very helpful asking if I needed help finding anything!
The cashier I went thru the first two times was very friendly and efficient and I breezed right through the line up. She also knew how to properly pack grocery bags!!!
When I went back for the third time in 10min, the line ups were 5-6 people deep, but another associate quickly jumped on cash and I was through in a flash again! Kudos, Valu Mart! Great job!!
Friendly place to shop. I work in Deep River every month for just one day and make sure to shop here. It's the only place I've found where I can buy paneer in the whole Ottawa valley (outside Ottawa)!
Overpriced on every item by about $2.00 and I frequently find that items I routinely buy are out of stock. I shop elsewhere when I have the opportunity for better prices. However; the staff are excellent and extremely friendly.
Well stocked, although very overpriced on most items....
Expensive, often poorly stocked, slow to add a cashier when busy. Worth the drive to independent Petawawa.
Very clean and organised. Staff are helpful. The only downfall us they Don't price match.
Great store. Friendly service. Cashiers are wonderful!
I was astounded at the price of ground beef. It's not steak! Over-priced groceries must be sending consumers to Petawawa and Pembroke.
A must for any one living in Chalk River,Great produce
Considering it's not one of the mega grocery stores, it has a very good selection. It has President's Choice, too, which is great, because I have PC Points.
This small town with big heart and Jan's Valu Mart is a big part of that
Isolation Chronicles: Part Six
My mom lives in rural Ontario approximately 3 hours north of Ottawa (where we live, feeling helpless to help her with what she needed). She is in isolation, as are we, and doesn't have the luxury of many stores nearby (none in fact, closest being about 30 min away). Groceries under the best of times are a thought-out event for Mom, let alone during a pandemic!
With bad asthma, we didn't want her to go out needlessly even for necessities. I contacted Jan's Valumart to see if there was anything they could do.
They responded within minutes of my request, professionally and efficiently. The store was well stocked and had almost everything Mom needed AND they delivered to her (30 minutes away!) Contactless! Less than a few days later. WOW .. talk about taking care of your community.
It was easy to pay with credit card over the phone, and her and her team were wonderful to deal with. Unsung heroes during these times of need.
I was astonished by the care and attention given to my request. Thank you, Jan!
Not a wide selection of meat or produce..but adequate
Staff friendly and helpful
Surprisingly and unexpectedly a lot of choices in a small village
Small town grocery with friendly people to help. Bring your own bags, as they charge you if you need some. Prices are fair and reasonable.
We went here to get lunch and it was a nice store that had everything. Even stuff on sale, for the garden. Ramona, was really nice to us very friendly.
It's the only major grocery in town. Giant tiger gives it some competition.
Fruits and vegetables are above average.
Very nice clean store, meat section is great. This is my go to store for groceries
A little expensive but has a great selection considering it is a small store.
Way over priced, cramped store with poor quality food, it's worth it to make the trip to Petawawa
Picked up cooked wedges at the deli department at 5pm today, which were, as is often the case, rock hard (as if they were cooked hours ago) without almost any actual potatoe in them (i e. Just hard fried shells of oil). I wanted to purchase a bbq'ed chicken from the deli as well, but, as is almost always the case, they were sold out. Knowing they would likely be sold out, I tried calling the store several times between 4 and 4:30 to reserve one, but no one answered the phone. Any grocery store in a city that routinely had this pitiful selection of dinner food available at 5pm would go out of business in weeks. And don't get me started with the produce section that is routinely completely out of stock of several fruits and vegetables, and rarely has any bananas that aren't completely green.
Very tight area to move around.
Wait in line to long to be checked out.
Great staff here prices a bit high but staffs service can almost offset that
Great small town store. Prices are a bit high at times but overall a great store for such a small town.
Always sold out of things on sale. They also list things for sale that are not actually on sale (example: they have had No Name peanut butter "on sale" for 3 months now but its the same price as they have always been so its not truthful. They just put the sale label on to move more products)
Prices are about 30% higher than Pembroke, but there is a good selection.
