The crown jewels were underwhelming, but the buildings we're fascinating! Prepare to spend hours here. I wish more of the tower floors were open.

This was totally worth the effort of going there. You get to see the Crown Jewels (pro tip: go there first, early if you can) and an amazing amount of English history. The overwhelming amount of armaments did get to be a bit much, but that was the role of the institution so it is only right that they would emphasize them. We went on the Beefeater tour (included in the price of admission, we had Scott Kelly who was a wonder and a treat) and we also went on the tour in the White Tower that starts in the chapel and is _much_ more low key. We wandered around for a couple of hours beyond that and got the impression there were definitely things we missed.

We were not planning on going into London on this trip. However our plans changed and since my wife had not seen the Tower that was our choice.
We paid the money and used the audio guides but of all the place we used it, surprisingly the Tower was the least beneficial. Some of our friends disagreed with this opinion and so your experience may differ.
We looked at the line up for viewing the Crown Jewels and we decided to pass. An hour later, ~45 minutes before closure, the line was more reasonable and so we saw the Crown Jewels. Hence, at least that day, waiting for the end of the day worked well.
The Tower of London is a castle located in London ...
The Tower of London is a castle located in London alongside the River Thames which was first built by William the Conqueror from c. 1077 CE and significantly added to over the centuries. Often referred to in England as simply the Tower , it has served as a fortress, palace, prison, treasury, arsenal, and zoo. Fallen kings, queens, and traitors were amongst those sent to the Tower, although surprisingly few inmates were executed within the castle's grounds. Today, it is a major tourist attraction with visitors eager to experience for themselves a place steeped in the history of England like no other, to admire the picturesque Beefeaters, and be dazzled by the fabulous Crown Jewels.

Lots to see at Tower of London! The Beefeater guide was interesting and insightful. Be sure to come early to avoid the crowds. Otherwise it will be difficult to hear what they have to say from a distance!

Fantastic family day out, you will need the best part of the day to enjoy all that is in offer. Spike, our Yeoman of the Guard , had a great personality and introduced the Tower and it's history brilliantly. The cafe was great with a wide range of food and drink, London prices though!!!! Don't be surprised if you have to que to see the Crown Jewels, but well worth the effort.

The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Roya...
The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins),although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under kings Richard I, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

As excellent as you can expect. The opportunity to walk where so many of the great names from English history have walked. Big tip: talk to as many of the yeomen standing around as you can. Find out about living there now and engage with them as individuals. They have fascinating stories to tell. The crown jewels will please many. Winter months make it very cold walking around but definitely worth it for a smaller number of visitors.

Is there a place more imposing in London than william the conquerors great white tower. It stands proudly over the rest of the castle. A visit around all the other towers is a must. The free guided tour is very informative and entertaining. See the places of royal execution. Have a look at the crown jewels. The price may be high but it is well worth it. This is norman architecture at it's best and just sums up how they imposed themselves upon the country after the 1066 conquest.

Lived in London for two years and never saw it. On a recent visit, went and was glad I did. It deepened my appreciation for historical life in London and the British monarchy. Tours of the buildings are conducted by Yeoman Warders, an honor bestowed on veterans who have served in the British armed forced for at least 22 years. Their knowledge and experience give a unique and valuable insight to British culture.

It is best to arrive at off peak times but this is truly not to be missed on any visit to London. The Beefeaters are what truly make the visit special. Make sure to join the tour upon arrival. The history combined with the crown jewels is absolutely worth the stop. Our kids were exceptionally engaged. Having a raven pay special attention to us really made the visit as well.

The Tower is a well thought out place to visit, we (including a 13 year old) spent over 4 hours there!
The State Regalia was well laid out and stunning with the right amount of information. Plus you can spend as much time as you wanted. I went round some sections once and then went back again.
Value for money, esp if you book on line for the discount.
Steps - I chickened out of the White Tower due to the steps, the others went up. There are steps for various towers and the walls.
Feeding the Raven was fun, trying on an old iron helmet was incredibly heavy. I couldn't lift the Army Backpack fully, new appreciation of Army personnel.
Map - what was nice was being able to plan your visit from the site map and go to places in any order you wanted.
Audio Guide - it's worth getting the audio guide, but take time to learn how to use it.

I have been to London many times and never had the chance to visit the Tower. It was a wonderful experience. We joined the tour given by the Yeoman Warden which was very informative and entertaining at the same time. So much history and drama within these walls. The Crown Jewels are here on display as well. Definitely worth a visit.

A MUST SEE IN LONDON!!!
It is possible to spend the whole day here. Take the tour with the Beefeater, definitely worth the time. I suggest going early and seeing the Crown Jewels first and then going on the tour because the queue fills up quickly and it can be a kind wait. Go into each tower, there is plenty to see, even if you aren't into history, it's amazing to see and learn about.

Was lucky enough to go for a "Ceremony of the Keys" a 700 year old tradition where they lock up the tower at 10pm each night. You need to book online a long time in advance (about 10 months at the moment) but is well worth it. Amazing evening and great talk by the beefeater.

Having Traveled by Train i took advantage of the 2 - for - 1 offer and visited this iconic piece of English history. Having fell for tour guide traps in the past i was a little hesitant to go on a guided tour by one of the Towers Yeoman, I was glad i did tho as Yeoman Jim was fantastic. A 1 hour guide seemed to last 20 min due to how entertained i was. After the tour we wandered round but due to large crowds avoided going to look at the Jewels (it was a Sunday tho). We enjoyed our visit and would return on another visit on our next trip

Classic tourist place, and a place everyone has seen, icon of London. Busy with tourists although no queue to get in. Information was very good, and guide tours every hour with the yeoman guards. The Tower of London is rightly known as one of the must see sights of London. I have been there a few times, most recently in March 2003. It is a good idea to get to the Tower as early as possible (not sure what time it actually opens though) and head straight for the Jewel House. It is quiet at this time of day and gives you an oppurtunity to get in and see the Crown Jewels without a crowd around you 'oohing' and 'aahing' After that you can set your own pace and explore the walls and the various buildings. I have never joined one of the Beefeater tours as I have a great love of history and therefore know a lot about events and people who inhabited the Tower. However the tour is the only way you can get into the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula and having never managed to do that before I tagged on to a tour just before they got to the chapel and was able to get inside. The restaurant inside the Tower is quite good but I did see all the school parties tucking into their packed lunches so that is also an option. Bottom line - it's expensive but well worth the visit.

The tower has had a make over inside the oldest part, the white tower and is interactive with the public.
What I cannot understand, as being a member of the British armed forces and once a guardsman protecting this iconic place is that we fail to have free entry into the grounds... I feel utterly devalued as a serviceman having to explain at the ticket desk to a person who does not speak English and in turn giving out attitude..not impressed..

Classic historic site and definite must go. Caution though about queuing for your tickets... order them online from the Tower and print them out ahead of time to AND arrive as early as possible to get a decent space in the queue. We did not present ahead but were early and were frustrated with the queuing system after purchasing our tickets from our concierge but then had to exchange our proof of purchase for paper tickets. That cumbersome and obnoxious detail plus the limited number of women's bathrooms compared to men's bathrooms, pushy crowds, and feral children lowers my review. The super nice staff at the Raven Shoppe, the fantastic fasionistia ravens themselves, and Gareth our guide in the White Tower certainly deserve 5 + star rating, but on balance sadly I can't rate them separately...sorry guys!
