A majestic campus surounded by tall redwoods and eucalyptus tree. The wildlife here is use to people walking around so don't be surprized to see a deer or squirrel walk passed without any hesitation.

One of a kind campus with a variety of advanced programs to match most interests. Hey, they mapped the human genome here and did it first, so they must be doing something right. A good fit both for physically or intellectually active people and any combination of the two.

Professors are active in their field, top notch college/public radio station on board, and an unbeatable natural environment with highly competitive div 3 sports teams. I biked and walked all around campus even though shuttles are available. I took classes from stag at the top of their field, produced an educational documentary, got licensed then programmed radio shows, and played on a national championship tennis team. Unofficial fight song of UCSC is also top notch even though it came out after i graduated. Check it out...

Close to a world class city San Francisco and has the ocean and bay add a backdrop and playground. Worth a visit if you're in the area to see how the buildings mesh (ala Frank Lloyd Wright) and are tucked into the natural environment. If nothing else visit for a hike, bike, run, or trip to the arboretum. Enjoy!

Forest forest forest. Great place to walk and enjoy the forest as well as scenic views of the plains, Santa Cruz city and its views of the Monterrey Bay. But be warned, for those allergic to pollen, I always get allergies up here during warmer temperatures.

Beautiful campus located in short vicinity to many beaches, hiking trails, restaurants and town attractions. Friendly and helpful staff, with plenty of nice students to help out as well. In general, the campus was easy to navigate with a map, and the free transit made it very easy to get where you wanted to go in no time. Or you can take your time and enjoy peaceful walks off the paved roads to various locations on campus. The on cafeteria food was priced reasonably, and tasted delicious. Overall, a very attractive school. I'd be happy to attend it!

Don't get me wrong, the professors, student body, ...

Don't get me wrong, the professors, student body, staff, and location are all wonderful. Especially the professors. They're very interested in students succeeding as individuals and make themselves very available, despite this being a research University. But there have been constant strikes since I started here three years ago and the administration generally would rather arrest protesters and threaten their contracts than come to the table. It's all greenwashing. Don't come here thinking it's a real liberal college, because that's just a facade. There are plenty of genuine colleges that also have great professors. I recommend looking into one of them if this doesn't improve.

Also, housing here is obscenely competitive and expensive (no guaranteed housing all 4 years either), and the meal plan, while ok, is repetitive and expensive and often not covered by financial aid. I recommend getting an on-campus apartment for the same price as a dorm and cooking for yourself. Transportation into town is also very slow and difficult due to traffic. Buses are packed like sardine cans. Public transportation to the Bay area takes several hours. Most students can't bring cars on campus, and frankly they shouldn't anyway because that would make traffic worse. The best way to get around is by jump bike. If you email their support you can get a $30/mo subscription for an hour of riding a day! Fast and bypasses traffic.

I got my undergraduate degree here in Computer Science: Game Design. The campus is beautiful, the student culture at UCSC is great, and I would recommend the Game Design program. The program is practical if you want to do game development after you graduate - they focus a lot on the technical aspects, like data structures and algorithms, but you get to have some fun making games too. Expect to have a few truly amazing professors, a lot of good ones, and a small handful that are so bad at teaching that you wonder how they even got there.

Got my undergraduate degree here. The most gorgeous campus I ever had the privilege of studying at! You'll see wildlife roaming the campus on a stroll to class, and you'll have infinite shade from all the trees!

UC Santa Cruz Campus is beautiful with many redwood trees. Also campus is huge. Not bicycle friendly campus, since there are lot of climbing and downhill involved. But walking is a good exercise for students. You can see view of the pacific ocean from some parts of the campus. You will also see many deer in the campus. Great campus for nature lovers.

The dining hall food gets really bad the further you go into the quarter. School management is terrible, but what can I say when Janet is still the UC President. I like the meme account ran by "George Blumenthal."

Just dropped out of this place. Everyone who is saying this is a good school is probably not a student here, or at least hasn't been within the last 5-10 years.

There are over 18,000 students and the campus can't handle them all. 300+ students in a single upper division class. Tuition keeps going up and up, despite the overcrowding. $450 for a parking permit, and you still can't park remotely close to any of your classes! $1600 a month for a triple dorm room with mold. Busses are always PACKED, and there aren't enough of them. Dining hall food is mostly junk, especially at the smaller dining halls, and costs a pretty penny. Place smells like sewage a lot because the pipes can't even handle all the students either.

I was in STEM, and some of the teachers are extremely ineffective educators with unrealistic expectations for their students (some, of course, are good.) The people on campus usually don't look very happy, and I don't blame them. I have tried UCSC twice, once in 2014-15 and more recently in 2018-19, and things have only gotten worse in the last 4 years.

Do NOT recommend!!

This review is based strictly on a visit made for a graduation.

The campus is honestly amazing. Sure it's going to have a bunch of trees everywhere given it's locations, but there is more to it. The people I talked to were friendly and patient giving me directions to the graduation location. The students that were not graduating that were still living on campus were polite when I was clearly lost walking around their dorm area. As a whole the place was well cared for, no tagging or random trash around. (Yes I bet they cleaning for the graduations, but with students STILL living on site trash usually appears UNLESS you show respect and keep your "home" aka campus clean. During the graduation speeches the faculty and students made references that the school, no matter how long ago you may have graduated, it will always be a place held deeply in your heart. I believe that. Before my visit I thought this was a "party school" and it maybe at times, but they also know how to keep a straight business face when its necessary.

I graduated UCSC in 1987. Sadly I am giving the University a one star review because of the appalling betrayal of the principles of education and learning by the UCSC administration in how they are responding to the graduate students strike.

Grad students at UCSC exercise their freedom of speech, assembly, and labor organizing to demand an end to exploitation and unsafe work conditions. A cost of living raise is a reasonable demand; everyone benefits when graduate students and all workers are given fair pay and can cover their needs for housing healthcare and raising families.

Instead of welcoming needed change and recognizing the real needs of overworked and underpaid grad students and UCSC employees, the University instead responded with mass firings, threats, intimidation, and treating the organizing students as the enemy and a danger to homeland security.

Something is very wrong at the top of the UCSC administration. Anyone considering becoming a student at UCSC should look elsewhere until UCSC can support its student workers and create a safe environment with fair pay and respect for all.

Be sure to note that all the positive reviews are:

A) From short term visits

B) Not from students

C) About how nice the campus looks

Guess what your actual lived experience will be, fools.

You might thing you're good, and you are, for now but when the cards are down, get ready to see how friendly it actually is.

Though the campus is spectacular and the research is, supposedly, top-notch the education seems spotty, to say the least. As an undergrad I struggled to land the classes I needed, let alone wanted. Fortunately, the biggest issues are UC not SC problems. Enjoy the town, it's a lot funkier than you might expect.

Graduated from Merrill College in 2009. Had the most amazing instructors for Aikido and Japanese classes. Beautiful campus. Great hiking easily accessible from the dorm rooms.

Some decent choices of restaurants, and the dining hall food was great. Too many problems with bureaucracy, politics, and lack of infrastructure to support a growing student body.
