It is clean and often loud, as others have noted. But UC Merced's biggest flaw is that it strives to be something like a "bookless library." There are a few books in there, but surprisingly few for a UC caliber library. They will try to find you electronic versions of things, but there are many resources that don't have electronic versions, or have pay-only-access electronic versions that you may or may not be able to use. You couldn't do serious research in this library, with the resources they have.

UC Merced Library
My daughter studies there, she is always happy and it's always clean!
It's an alright library, but the quietest place throughout the library is the top floor, it's the only part of campus where I can have some peace and quiet, it'd be nice if there was another library, should've thought about that before they made the campus
A fine structure that encourages pursuing the depths of erudition indeed.
Clean and open late (usually till midnight), but is incredibly loud. People here have no filter, and will speak at near-shouting levels. There is a quiet section, but is fairly small. There are also rooms you can reserve for a max of 2 hours, but walls are extremely thin so you will hear your neighbors talking loudly. During the day, there are plenty of other places on campus that are not designated quiet areas, that will easily give you a more study-friendly environment.
