Very racist towards white people and we're trying to cause racial divide and if a white person got near or tried to pass the recent protest they were attacked absolutely disgusted with the staff for encouraging this to happen my children won't go near there

Great school! Professors for the most part foster critical thinking skills and lend voice to students' different experiences on campus! I wouldn't trade being here for the world!
I visited the campus as I was seriously considering graduate school here, its californian, therefore snobby as hell and arrogant, but the campus looked amazing and it got me really fired up when I think about how many amazing PIs this school brings in.. But after seeing how they have allowed riots to take place like that and pat themselves on the back for it, I realized I might be better off doing work someplace else, not only would I feel unsafe living here, the cost of attendance is insane for some reason california is bankrupt still and at other places they will actually pay me to get my grad degree rather than the other way around,
Horribly racist. Strongly opposes free speech. Education concentrated on preparing students for the real world severely lacking. Proves only that if you fight the monster long enough, you become the monster.
Graduated in 2016 from this amazing institution! Not only is the education top-notch, taught by professors who are pioneers in their fields, but the diverse and welcoming atmosphere and culture of excellence has helped me develop a global perspective! I've met and befriended people from vastly different walks of life, and I'm grateful for the eye-opening discussions and experiences we've had!
What makes the university great is its student body. These people are some of the most determined, forward-thinking, smart, world-class and wonderful people in the world! You learn something new everyday, not only in class, but just from being present among your peers and faculty and engaging them!
Academics are obviously world-leading, as Berkeley has many departments consistently ranked in the top 10 and top 5 perennially. As such, there is a palpable sense of competition and rigor that goes with being a California Golden Bear. No one will hold your hand and guide you step by step here. You need to be a go-getter and proactive in everything you do.
Regarding the recent protests and anti-free-speech connotation that people are associating with Berkeley, I just want to say that the actions of a few non-students and maybe even a few students don't represent the views of the University and the vast majority of the student and faculty body. As the home of the Free Speech Movement, we will never prevent the right to speech and peaceful protest, but keep in mind that protesting hate speech doesn't mean we are anti-free-speech. We are within our rights to peacefully protest hate speech.
Moving on to athletics, Cal is D-1, and although our football team was on the rise with Jared Goff (#1 NFL draft pick in 2016 and QB of the LA Rams), we've hit another slump. Hopefully, we climb out of that soon. Regardless, the game-day atmosphere is always electric and the student section is rocking! Its a great experience that every undergrad should have at least once! Our basketball team is also competitive every year, and gives a nice indoor event to attend during the winter. Same as in football, the atmosphere is electric and the student section is rocking! Although football and basketball are the main sports students follow, we have top-notch championship teams in water polo, rugby, soccer, and more!
Dorms are okay, and most people move out after their first year unless you are lucky enough to snag a dorm suite or mini-suite. Berkeley seems to get more crowded every year, and its basically an urban college town. Rents are high, which is why everyone has housemates. However, the campus grounds themselves are beautiful and open. From the base of the Campanile (school tower), you can see the Bay, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate bridge!
The food is amazing in Berkeley, not so much the dining hall food, but the surrounding eateries and hole-in-the-walls serve up some seriously good grub. They have everything from Asian cuisine to Italian/Mediterranean to good ol' hot dogs and hamburgers. Whatever you're feeling for the day, it'll be there! The food is as diverse as Berkeley is!
Going back to academics, Berkeley has not only given me a world-class education, but the connections I've made here helped open more doors of opportunity. There are many successful Cal alumni in the Bay Area, California, and around the world looking to give back and willing to help the next generation of Cal students!
I was an undergrad in the EECS and MSE joint major at this university. For undergrad engineering students, the school should teach you how to think for yourself. Don't expect to get hand-holding here. You are paying for an education, so professors are supposed to do standard things for you like answer your questions after class or write rec letters for you. Besides that, expect to only get serious recognition if a) you win awards that make the university more reputable, b) you make a solid research contribution/discovery, or c) you "show commitment to" profs (this may involve badgering them).
I don't necessarily recommend the EECS and MSE joint major unless you are absolutely committed to exploring the two majors OR you are for sure into device research/fabrication. My personal take is that it is safer to choose EECS as your major if you had to choose between EECS & MSE or just EECS.
After being here 4 years, my impression is that this school is worth it for in-staters, maybe worth it for internationals, and probably not worth it for out-of-staters. Lower-division class sizes can be ginormous (e.g. 1200 students), so a lot of people don't go to lecture. Also consider that homework/test questions tend to be re-used for some classes, so it's important that an undergraduate student take the initiative to learn course material.
The best thing about this university is the people you meet. You learn how to deal with different types of ambitious and smart people here, and you get to see a wide range of personalities. This is probably what I will miss the most about here.
To undergrads: I also recommend taking graduate level (200 level) classes as soon as possible if you have the opportunity.
Beyond the academics and intellectualism of the school, I would say there are plenty of things to do in the area, which definitely makes Berkeley (for undergrad and grad) attractive.
By far the worst police department ever! We wish less people like their officers would be in this world thinking they have a little power they can treat any human being the way they want! I hope the also have mental training not only physical as they show they are! "Less brain more physical"
Racist student body supported by an equally racist faculty (not all). Safe spaces rendering future students socially maladjusted and unable to accept the diversity of thought in the world.
Id be so embarrassed to go here. Much racism was done with a protest with all colored people blocking main entrances. No "whites" were aloud to pass and this is how history is going to repeat itself. No faith in humanity at this point
I'm a current student and I expected more from the "#1 public university in the world". Doesn't gave a safe environment. For example, there's always sexual assaults, robberies, assaults etc. Makes one think how the chancellor spent hundreds of thousands for a couple of days of free speech week and poof cops disappeared. In other words, the chancellor militarized the capus for a week and then wasn't spending money on protecting its student after that. The campus is dirty, unsafe, overrated, expensive etc. I thought this raved about campus would have pride in being the "#1 public university in the world" it clearly doesn't give a duck.
There is a ton of history on the original University of California. Highly recommend scheduling a campus tour with the visitor's center. Explore the libraries!
Went on a tour of the campus and was discriminated against and blocked from certain routes due to me being white.....not what I expected from such a prestigious school. I guess this is how they treat disabled veterans. I'll be looking elsewhere to continue my education.
I'm a white male and neither liberal nor conservative. I've never been offended or something like that. It frightens me a lot how people trying to make this place bad only because of their political attitude. Please be smart and draw your own conclusions! Don't be unsettled by those stupid reviews!
We're so lucky to have the best public university in the world, and one of the best universities of all, right here, with its amazing and high-achieving faculty and its committed and high-achieving students and its fascinating and eclectic and historic and open campus and its impressive libraries and collections and its dinosaurs and other fossils and its collection of Mark Twain papers and its Sather Gate and its Campanile and its poets and artists and its museums and its Strawberry Creek and redwood trees and its political history of struggle and social change and its tremendous actuality and potential for so much more to be learned, discovered, enjoyed!
The recent actions of many of the faculty and students in association with this institution are utterly reprehensible and illustrate blatant hypocrisy. Equality and respect are not gained through the employment of malicious intent. Actions such as these propagate division and mistrust amongst the common people; which is exactly what the establishment desires. Division through: ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual preferences, political preferences, etc. All for us to remain squabbling and distracted; that we might be more easily manipulated. Through micro evolution there are many colors, but there is only one race. To the multitudes of hypnotized individuals I implore you to wake. Another adversary is in need of your attention.
I walked around this university and was accused of being a racist just for being a white male! It needs to be defunded and shut down for being a communist training camp.
Study here if you like Kool-Aid and are interested in joining a political religion. Free cleansing of your mind on admission. Students with no understanding or experience of the world they occupy will be sure to tell you how to live in it, and faculty remain complacent in suppressing anything that threatens liberal doctrine.
An overpriced adult care care center. I'll never accept contracts here again.
Really not as great as everyone thinks. I transferred to Yale. There are schools with as good or better reputations that don't have as much bureaucracy & paperwork when trying to get administrative things done. But, heck it's a public institution. Not for everyone. . . just sayin'.
I graduated within the last few years and UC Berkeley has pushed me to grow - academically, interpersonally, and in terms of time management. At this school, I had to work very hard for my grades, but that effort has paid off in how I deal with others in the professional world. The resources are there, and I was challenged to reach out of my comfort zone and utilize them to the best of my ability.
It boggles my mind that hundreds of commenters who haven't even physically been to this school would leave one-star reviews based on their political opinions, not the value of education or anything multi-facated for that matter. Shame on you for your immaturity.
This school is allowing racism in order to protest racism. White people are no longer safe or welcome there. If I were you I'd consider the university of Chicago.
Very nice campus , rich in history. The most popular club is the Republican Club ! Don't be fooled by how liberal the city is. Also the birth of free speech on college campus started right here in Berkeley. John 3:16
I got beat and stabbed by a bunch of kids while i was walking on the side walk...I have no idea what I did, I was just walking. They were calling me a capitalist pig while beating me half to death.
The students at University of California at Berkeley held a violent protest on. Campu last Friday to demand additional segregated "spaces of color" to exclude all white students. During the protest, the students of color blocked traffic, would not let white student pass through, but would allow other students of "color" to pass. This was encouraged by the faculty and staff of the university. This is blatent discrimination of white people! Discrimination of anyone is wrong. Why is it now acceptable to openly discriminate?????
I met her in 1982 for two months from July 4 to September 5. Beautiful university and many people from all over the world saw each other at the university. Beautiful memories
