I love CAL. My son, who is a frosh this year (2013/14) love Cal. Maybe there is less beauracracy at Yale, as an earlier commenter stated, but he, me, we made the effort, and have had personalized, hands-on tremendous service. No, they are not knocking on doors fluffing and spreading red carpets, like perhaps at Princeton and Yale where students are royalty and treated as such, but WOW, with a minimal amount of effort my son has , with my help, navigated all and it's all there, every kind of service, help, one can imagine, and UCB is just as well-thought of nationally and internationally as if it is Harvard or Stanford in enough circles and those closed circles may be able to be accessed with a jump from public ugrad UCB to snootville/connections U Ivy League grad school later.

There are NO Final Clubs (Harvard) or Eating Clubs (Princeton) where just money, but you and your family best have plenty, and power, and influence. there are notable social stratifications at the Ivy League, Dartmouth (drunkards with nothing to do but haze), that is absent from UC Berkeley. Cal is a dream-come-true and there are plenty here who prefer CA, SF Bay to freeze your patootie off, over-crowded East of Mississippi. At least we're warm at our bus stops! Pacific Rim, so much closer, too, I love and admire my son's Administrative Staff who are there with answers quicker than one can blink, if approached. Go Bears!!!!! Go Admissions. Go L&S Advising. Go Haas Advising. Go Polit Econ Advising. Go Russian and Mandarin departs and and and,...he's only touched the tip of the iceberg of CAL. Go Fin Aid. Go Go Go, wonderful students and staff everywhere...so says my son. I am not attending - didn't make it past Cupertino's De Anza's RN School community college. I live vicariously as so many parents do.

THIS SCHOOL ALLOWS PROFESSOR'S TO VIOLATE THE CONS...

THIS SCHOOL ALLOWS PROFESSOR'S TO VIOLATE THE CONSTITUTION! "SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE" LOOK THIS PROFESSOR UP!

Professor Hatem Bazian of the University of California at Berkeley has given his 100 students an unusual assignment. They must create a Twitter account and denounce Islamaphobia for his Asian American Studies 132AC: Islamaphobia, class. Tarek Fatah, a columnist for the Toronto Sun.says he received an email from a student in Bazian s class. The student wrote:

I ve been told by one of my professors I will be required, as part of my grade, to start a Twitter account and tweet weekly on Islamophobia. I can t help but feel this is unethical. This is his agenda not mine.

Bazian is co-founder of Zaytuna College, the first Muslim college in the United States.

The student claims Bazian is using his class for unpaid labor to further his goals:

There are 100 students in the class, all of us forced to create individual Twitter accounts. I m not wholly clear on what our final project is yet (I find it very interesting that he excludes both the Twitter account requirement AND the final project from his official syllabus), but we have to meet with a group in San Francisco, and our class will be surveying people of color on the impact of some ads put out by [anti-Sharia blogger] Pamela Gellar. Now I m no Pamela Gellar fan, I think she s nuts, but I feel between the Twitter stuff and the final project he s basically using us as unpaid labor to work on his agenda.

A representative from Berkeley has refused to comment on this issue. Bazian did offer a reply:

My course is designated as an American culture community engagement scholarship class Students are asked to send at least one posting per week on something related to the course content, be it from the actual reading or anything they read or came across. The class is titled De-Constructing Islamophobia and the History of Otherness [Students] are asked to post based on examining Islamophobia through looking at earlier historical examples.

Sponsors of the course includes:

Zaytuna College, Bay Area Shura Council (a non-profit organization of mosques), the Council on Islamic Relations, Mosaic TV, Arab Talk Radio and Illume Magazine

Berkeley is a difficult place. There is undeniably an impersonal, cut-throat atmosphere in most classes, particularly the larger ones (so, again, most of them). Students are primarily preoccupied with their phones and laptops rather than with their peers and lecturers. Additionally, clubs are competitive to gain entrance into, so simply putting yourself "out there" isn't a guarantee of social acceptance. In humanities courses, B-grades are mostly manageable, whereas A's typically take effort; in STEM, it's probably more difficult to maintain a reasonable GPA. With all that said, having taken a handful of interesting courses so far, I do feel mentally stimulated here, and there are definitely lots of things to do, beyond the standard drinking/partying college culture (hiking, sailing, kayaking; going out to eat; going to the movies; going to the city; etc.). However, it is finding the people here to do them with, and the time to do them, that are the limiting factors.

Always my favorite place to visit when I'm home. My grand daughter is named after this city. So many things to do and see. People's park. The book store, Rasputin's, I miss Blondies. Berkeley is the best.

Go Bear! A uniquely beautiful campus and great studies programs. As all universities it has both great and not so great cariculums ,as well as great and not so great professors, ie: previous Mathematical Phd. and genius level Dr. Ted Kaczynski. (AKA: The Unibomber).
Still, all in all a highly excelled and perfect in so many ways a great domain of study.

My dad and I have been going to Cal football and basketball games for a long time now and it has always been a great experience. On time we even went to a USA swim meet (at Speiker Aquatics Center)and the Cal v.s. Stanford game at Stanford in one day. We love to go to Blondie's Pizza, Top Dog, and Smart Alex's and Triple Rock Brew House. (All of which highly recommend.) We enjoy the halls, buildings and most of all the school. I definitely want to go to Berkley when I grow up. I give 5 thumbs up.

I really want to return as a readmit student and complete my B.S. in Applied Mathematics. I could probably make a difference in the world with this degree. I could also get a Master's degree in Mathematical modeling. I want to keep learning. My parents met at UC Berkeley in the 1960s. I think UC Berkeley is the most significant university in the US given what it stands for. I will update. I am also an MGF writer with some funny stories sprinkled in comparing UCSD to UC Berkeley.

Best public university in the world; though Berkeley is more of a frenemy when it comes to the amount of work I have to do. Realistically though, my education here has taught me to be Critical or the world around me.

You can't fight or hope to end racism or any kind of intolerance by promoting a different kind of racism or intolerance... I would have expected academics to have understood that basic principle.

Sad to see how many poor millennials confuse regressive with progressive today.

Allowing a segregation of color protest on campus ...

Allowing a segregation of color protest on campus is rediculous. Congratulations Dean you just put this country 50 years into the past. These students should be reprimanded or expelled for having a race hating protest on campus and not allowing students and staff into the school. My children will never go to this school. Thank you.

I am a Cal student, so might be biased but the campus is huge and gorgeous! If you are in the neighborhood definitely take a tour. There are so many interesting facts about our campus that still amaze me. My 2 favorite spots would be the Morrison reading room in doe library and memorial glade.

So much to see and do around Berkeley.

One of the best and famous universities in the wor...

One of the best and famous universities in the world. Renowned for its historical academic achievements, staffs, and atmosphere.
Facility-wise, old and new interlocked; major-wise, liberal arts and science exchanged; inhabitant-wise, intelligence and passion fused.
That said, some buildings and structures are antiqued enough to be historical monuments, but more are plain old and heavy-mood. New buildings are erecting, but they are a whole different story. Berkeley, or Cal, is known for its iconic Campanile and the hilly campus (and fogs), meaning if one isn't at least minimally physically fit, one better not take classes that would require repetitive up-down walking daily.
Downtown Berkeley is both ghetto and renovated, in the sense of one could experience very sophisticated and liberal events, while also spotting mess-up incidents right next. All in all, it is a "well balanced" scene.
---and this unique mixture extends well inside the campus (well, there are not really any practical walls blocking it, while the University has multiple off-campus buildings buried in the town; and there are frats and srats), except with a much thicker academic feelings, and higher chances hearing intelligent exchanges of words.
Education here is inspiring and thoughtful. Although some majors are fiercely competitive and popular, while some are the exact opposite. The spirit of sparkling new ideas and merging different ones are common everywhere. Undergraduate classes often aren't ideal in the area of class size and chance to interact with professors, but some of the liberal literature / general education classes unrelated to one's major, could have longlasting effects throughout life and career, which I think is valuable.

The Administration at UC Berkeley is shameful for creating an environment of Liberal Anti-Free Speech advocates and then trying to limit the free speech of others by charging huge security fees. The administration is complicit in encouraging this environment themselves which creates the necessity of the security fees. My money and my kids will not be going to UC Berkeley.

This is the perfect place to go if you want to complain about how your problems are everyone else's fault. Your free speech is only defended if your speech supports the state. A beautiful Marxist Paradise that even Vladimir Putin would be proud of. Berkley offers many socialist amnemities to aid on your tightly controlled experience. For example: being able to wear a mask while you protest here (as long as you side with the state) so you don't need to be held accountable for your actions while rioting. (Of chorse we endorse this just look us up on YouTube!) This finely tuned state propaganda machine is well supported by the local Berkeley police as well as the Berkeley city police and even the very Mayor to ensure that supporters of the state are well defended from the hateful capitalist scum that want to hurt your feelings by speaking. The Berkeley school police are even bound by policy to allow you to beat and attack capitalists to your hearts content... Literally! Just don't try to kill anyone. Berkeley will have to step in if it looks like that is an absolute certainty. But hey, who knows what the future brings right?

How in the world could you think that segregating ...

How in the world could you think that segregating students because of color was a good idea? There were great men and women who fought for all races to be equal and you have just thrown us back into a tumultuous time. As a southern woman I'm appalled as a mother of teens I'm irate. I would never send my children to a school that didn't treat it's students as equal. Students and faculty who were involved in the protest should be punished. Racism comes in all color but a popular university that establishes this practice is disgusting. How can you claim to care about the students that attend your university and knowingly place some in higher regard. This country needs to pull together instead of apart. This generation whom feel as if they're entitled will surely fail when the time comes that life gets to hard.

We walked to campus early one morning and just wandered around. The campus was bustling, and the students seemed to be rushing somewhere. The buildings are lovely, with some upgrades going on. The carillon is definitely the centerpiece of the fantastic campus.
My only regret was that we did not have time to tour the vast facilities.
One of the most lovely college campuses we have ever been to.

Thus school allows these lunatic children to protest, disrupt classes, and be completely racist to white students. They should not have safe spaces in schools. How is this preparing these students for the real world? It's not, in fact it is doing the exact opposite.

The students need to stop throwing M80s into the crowd because people who aren't involved in their political arguments are getting hit with explosive weapons. This place is going downhill at an astounding rate. There's no way that the current 4.6 rating for this college is a real number, look at everyone besides me who are sick of the violence and intimidation and racism that we are a victim of. I feel justified in saying I think it's one of the worst colleges ever, it's unsafe to express your calm, peaceful, freedom of ideas because you have a high chance to be physically or financially harmed out of the effect if you are the race and political stance that they have proven to hate to the point of violent terroristic attacks against those who are different than the majority.

Amazing - Innovators and trail blazers. Created Spark on Hadoop, the concept of open source with BSD unix, gene editing technology CRISPR... a long list. Nobel prize and Genius grant awardees abound. Also entrepreneurs from here create top companies like Apple. Sometimes good inventions could be used for evil like atomic bomb from Dr Oppenheimer but application aside UC Berkeley is a key hub of world's innovation.

Also ignore the alt right commenters, it is Berkeley innovation to reject the ideas of hate and anti-fact, anti-science views that could be disproved methodically. Like saying human induced climate change is not real - this view cant be accepted as a alternative truth since the science and facts are convincing.

Best Product Management Program around. I attended an immersion class earlier this year. You learn from the participants as much as from the instructors. The classes are open to encourage new thinking.
