I don't go to Top of the Hill for the food. It's good, but it's the feeling of being in Chapel Hill, sitting outside looking over Franklin Street, that's so special. Sunset is a great time to sit, have a beer and a burger and experience Chapel Hill. Top of the Hill is the Towns equivalent of a waterfront restaurant.
Amazing view of Franklin St. Rooftop balcony. Brunch was delicious. Mimosas available for purchase. Breweries was awesome. Friendly staff.
Iconic place in chapel hill. The outdoor seating is awesome and overlooks Franklin st. The food is good but nothing special. Not to find of their beer though. Still a good place to go of you've never been.
The nachos were terrible, what a waste of money. No real cheese and a small portion. The service was awful and took forever and they were not even that busy. I would never go here again.
Casual or dressy, inside or out (on the third floor), Topo is a Chapel Hill institution with casual food, and good beer.
Good food with creative flavors. Nice open air rooftop seating.
My daughters love the Mac and cheese and green beans, I love the pear/goat cheese salad with grilled chicken. The goat cheese is SO FRESH and the chicken was cooked perfectly... that is not an exaggeration. It was the most perfectly grilled chicken I have ever put in my mouth.
TOH is at the top of the hill at Franklin and Columbia Streets. It's location on the third floor and outside deck area provide some great views and photo opportunities. But for our visit on 28 Oct that's where the "top" stops. Overall the food was just average as well as the microbrews. We had the Lizard Chips, Goat Cheese Salad, and the Jambalaya...all leaving us with a full but less than satisfying feeling. Service was just ok largely due to appetizers and the main courses arriving at the same time with the occasional flyby. So if you're looking for a place post game to have an average beer with a view, this is it.
Great IPA beer and burgers. Views and service outstanding. A must stop place in Chapel Hill.
Service, vibe, and tea were great, but the food was just ok.
Beer was bomb. Service was good. Wasn't too impressed with my dinner entree. I'd recommend top of the hill for appetizers and alcohol rather than for dinner.
The food was amazing. Looking forward to coming back with my relatives.
The food is mediocre but the ambiance and memories make it stand out.
This is a very fancy restaurant. Can be pricy but good to have a formal dinner here
Restaurant with iconic location, great food (The chicken breast, chicken park flatbread, and burger were ordered) but a decent, not mind-blowing IPA.
Awesome good food. Many locally sourced choices. Wonderful ambience!
Great place for Heels fans especially on game days!
Great view from the balcony. Cold beer, hot sunset.
Good food. I got the pork mac and cheese but I wouldn't recommend it, the pork tasted like it was refrigerated and not covered or frozen at one point. The sweet potatoe fries were so good, loved that weird dipping sauce. My wife loved her sangria.
Great place to eat and drink. My hubby is big on beer and I like a good virgin cocktail, which this place have both of those things in abundance. The appetizer with the house kettle chips is great, and the dishes we got were delicious as well. Plus they have very spacious roof top patio with the best view of the area. Oh and it's not too expensive, which is a great bonus
Pricey for what you're getting. This place is a staple in the Chapel Hill culture though - you've got to try it at least once.
Service and food were both average. The Sunday brunch menu was nice, and it didn't take long to be seated outside. The best part about the meal was the weather.
Great hangout place. I dine here whenever I get a chance to go near the downtown area in Chapel Hill. Great atmosphere, food and selection of micro-brewery beers. Definitely Chapel Hill's party place on the week-ends; get there early if you don't want to wait in line.
Nice place, good atmosphere, reasonable prices, nice food, very good beer.
Great food, great beer, great service. Julie gave food service; order whatever she suggests.
Service was great, burger was very good, pulled pork sandwich was uneatable
Beer was good, no complaints about the food, service was fine. Perhaps it was just the wet early Monday evening but the place just lacked a vibe... an atmosphere...
My husband and I live in Virginia, but travel to Chapel Hill to watch a UNC game at least once a year. We always look forward to eating at TOPO. It's usually too chilly to eat on the deck but one time we went, it was great weather. I ordered a red pepper goat cheese chicken sandwich that was amazing. My husband has the long sleeved Carolina Blue T-shirt from TOPO, and I steal it all the time because its soft and reminds me of Chapel Hill.
Good food and great atmosphere, you have to sit out outside and the view is fantastic
Come for the beer (they brew their own) and the ambiance. Not for the food. Mediocre at best.
Kenan lager is great! Me and my wife ate early lunch and the food was wonderful. Good food and drink for the money. Great location as well!
Good service. A few strange flavors but good food overall. Sweet potato fries were great.
They do have a kids menu also though they don't list it on their website. Very generic stuff though. Nothing special
Great time with family celebrating a birthday. Jambalaya and coffee came to the table luke warm...not hot. Flavor of all dishes was excellent however. Choice of dessert for birthday boy was free. Delicious cheesecake.
Fantabulous distillery tour! Not only informative & fascinating, but led by the enthusiastic owner himself. They have you sample top brands next to theirs which is eye-opening because there's no comparison! And our dinner beforehand at the restaurant was amazing - I had the wild mushroom grit cakes - yummm! We ate outside. I'd recommend both the restaurant and the tour to anyone!
Nice view of roof top view of Chapel Hill. Decent selection of comfort food
We hosted our company holiday party in The Great Room at Top of the Hill. The atmosphere, service, and food were all amazing. We received tons of compliments from the party guests. I would highly recommend this venue for a party!
Service was fantastic, nachos were amazing, beer was fabulous.
Ordered hush puppies and the fried chicken sandwich. I would have preferred a chik-fil-a sandwich but the hush puppies were awesome. Service was good.
A very good and a famous restaurant in Chapel Hill. The good is great
We have been waiting f our foods for over 2 hours, because they have a big party, the place is empty is 3:00 pm not even dinner time.
Last time coming here
This is the premiere, go to spot in Chapel Hill for a great beer, snack or a meal. We often use this for Pre-Game kick off. Go Heels!
We went here for my birthday last year and had a great time! Sit on the roof and enjoy a blueberry beer. I know it sounds crazy, but it was totally delicious and I still dream about it! Can't wait to go back.
Forget the name of the dish. I know it's not on the menu but it has tater tots, pulled pike, and a couple other things. Wanna say cheese pot, but whatever it was, very good.
I have only gone for lunches here so keep that in mind with this review. Service, food, and prices were all good.
I ate the beef brisket and it was delicious. The restaurant overlooks Chapel Hill.
I'd rate more stars but Google only lets you pick 5! Service was great, my food was great, and the view was great. I'll stop by again next time I'm in town.
Very good cevezas and service. I can't say the same about the cymbals
This place makes every game day great! 100% worth the wait if packed and the best place in Chapel Hill every game day.
It's a staple to the Chapel Hill community. They brew great beer, have good food, distill liquor, and a great night life scene. Be sure to find the back bar and try the blueberry beer when in season.
This place tends to be very crowded on the weekends, but for a really good reason: Rooftop seating. I d recommend getting the Bavarian Pretzels with Beer Cheese as your appetizer, and get either the Buttermilk Chicken or try the Coke Braised Beef!
The local Institution and staple. Terrific food, great service, prime location!
Get the fried chicken. It is delicious! Service was excellent! The atmosphere is great!
My girlfriend and I went this past weekend. She had the Jambalaya and I had the BBQ Eggs Benedict. Both dishes were great. She enjoyed their White which is a big step for her considering it's the first craft beer I've been able to get her to enjoy.
Their Brown (very good) was on cask along with their Pumpkin. I'm tired of Pumpkin but it was good. I would have liked their beers to have been served a bit colder, but the temperature wasn't far off. All in all, a great place to go to enjoy good food and decent beer at a good price. A great middle of the road brewery.
Good place. Good drinks. Pork and grits were awesome!
It's a great place to chill off. The patio tables are awesome. The pizzas are real good.
Good place to sit outside on the terrace, enjoy pint or two of their beers and nibble on an appetizer or two.
Tried this restaurant out a few times and enjoyed it for the most part. They have a nice distillery and beer selection. I ordered the beef brisket (Really good) however they could improve upon a couple of things. Firstly, turn the AC down! It was unusually hot both times I visited this restaurant and I am in no way a fat person; second the tiles on the balcony could use some reinforcement as they appear to be coming loose.
TOPO is a great place to have a business/academic lunch, or to bring your folks from out of town. It has good food, excellent views of Franklin St, amazing location, and a solid selection of beers. It's main appeal is that it is so close to campus, since there are much better options for dining and drinking in town.
Awesome atmosphere, great view of Franklin Street, delectable food! Choose the salmon dish and you won't be disappointed.
Certainly the premiere place to drink and have a night out in Chapel Hill
Great view, great vibe, and great fun. Although, it is important to make a reservation ahead of time to avoid a wait. I recommend the sweet potato fries appetizer and to sit outside. However.... GO WOLFPACK!!
Fun bar with good dancing music and an awesome balcony. Great beer selections too.
Morgan the barkeep is the absolute best! Even at 2am.
Fun place to eat, great place to chill and drink. The blue ridge blueberry wheat is excellent. Saturday nights are a must! Best views in chapel hill
I would describe Top of the Hill as the classiest bar/restaurant in town. This is the absolute best place to watch any sporting outside of being in Kenan or the Dean Dome. The drinks are cheap (relative to DC) and there is always a great party crowd. I would advise that you get to the bar early on the weekends or you will end up waiting at least 30 mins trying to get through the door. I would say that this is a more strict bar so you won't find may underagers at this bar. Topo is a great place to take a date and/or reunite with other alumni.
Good atmosphere for watching a game with good food and house made beers.
I give this place a solid 3.5. It s really hit or miss when it comes to service. Considering the price point and location, I would have expected better trained staff. Despite the occasional absentminded waiters, the location is great - the rooftop bar overlooking Franklin is really the biggest selling point, in my opinion.
We had a party of 13, on a busy Thursday night and they seated us within 5 minutes. Service was exceptional and equally as fast. Food was outstanding, an opinion shared by everyone in our party. Would definitely recommend.
The atmosphere is lovely, the drinks are strong, the bartenders are so nice and the food is delicious!
if you like beer this place is for you, but I do not like beer, so not a place for me.
Visiting from out of town and had an absolutely incredible experience. The house made organic vodka was definitely on point. Service and food equally impressive and would visit again. Thanks for the wonderful time.
The latest venture from Scott Maitland and Esteban McMahan, owners of Chapel Hill s popular Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery, the Distillery is a bare bones warehouse space and tasting room. (The ambience is provided by the gleaming pots and stills visible beyond a floor-to-ceiling glass wall and a vintage, army-issue bicycle belonging to McMahan.) No matter, all attention is on the organic distillations anyway. Using 100% soft red winter wheat harvested two hours east in Scotland Neck, N.C., the distillery currently produces three different spirits: Carolina whiskey (also known as white dog or moonshine), wheat-based vodka (notably sweet and smooth) and a beautifully floral Piedmont gin. Reserve a tasting in advance and compare against other known labels for yourself. While you can find all three bottles at many local pubs, wholesale distribution remains regional. So you may want to pack a few bottles for the plane.
omg this place is so amazing they got some really good tasty food
I would call this "the" hot spot bar in Chapel Hill right now. I'm a senior undergrad and it's hardly worth texting people to ask where they're going out. Everyone will be at TopO at some point.
They have lots of bar space, fun DJs occasionally, a location that can't be beat, and quality facilities.
Drinks are a little too expensive for college students on a budget and they rarely do specials. Maybe have a few cheaper drinks elsewhere before ending the night with great company at a really classy bar.
Bar we went to after Kelsey wedding. Popular where ppl go to especially after school wins a national championship.
The food was excellent. I gave it 4 stars because the service could have been much better. Refills finally came at the end of our lunch. Although, I have been there and the service was a little better.
The hush puppies were the best item we ordered. The fried chicken was very good but not the best we ve had. The southwest pasta needed more flavor. The chicken in it was rubbery, which I m told is due to being overcooked. The cheesecake was still partially frozen.
It was a good dinner but wasn t stellar.
Average might be too positive of a word to describe my experience there. Waitress rarely came by and the Chicken Bacon Roulade was VERY mediocre. The potatoes were without a doubt instant, from a box. The chicken and sauce had 0 flavor. FOR $15.99?! Extremely disappointing. I get its a college restaurant, but I shouldn't have felt like I was eating cafeteria food.
Blueberry wheat beer was actually pretty good, but that's because it didn't taste like blueberries.
My grilled chicken sandwich was just familiar enough to be wonderful and just surprising enough to be interesting. I also loved getting to sit outdoors on their deck.
This should be your go to bar in chapel hill, especially during this pandemic. The food is excellent, drinks (beer and liquor) are made in house, and the rooftop bar atmosphere is so fun.
We were on a tour of Chapel Hill and Top of the Hill Restaurant was suggested to us by our tour guide, Mike. The food and service was amazing, no complaints! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. I had the grit cakes with shrimp and the blueberry wheat beer. We all agreed this was the best meal we have had our entire vacation!
