Wonderful old Inn and restaurant. The view and atmosphere on the patio are amazing. The food was excellent and the staff were very polite and attentive.

I was there most recently for a private party. The service was fast, the people were nice and the food was amazing. They had some of the best prime rib I've had in a while. I love the house dressing! Hands down my favorite of all dressings. The view outside on the terrace is great and I highly recommend sitting out there.

This place has it all. Excellent ambiance. The food is remarkable. The view is breathtaking. The staff is helpful and friendly. It closes for a time in the winter.

If your going for the view that was great but the food was a huge disappointment. Scallops were sliced in half horizontal (that was tacky) and there were 5 halfs swimming in garlic butter which is all I tasted. Shrimp cocktail dont bother 5 large shrimp very tough and flavorless. Veal was paper thin and was more breading than meat. Served with white rice which wasn't hot. Veggies were a mix of yellow and green thinly sliced squash and was good. Wait staff was friendly but appeared overwhelmed.Wont go again, don't get what the hype is all about. Bring a sandwich and sit on a bench in front of property you'll save yourself 100 bucks for 2 on lunch and get the view for free.

Quiet place to rest and with a wonderful lake where you can walk and play sports. The terrace has a lot of atmosphere in summer.

Simply the best restaurant in New England period. Maybe the world. Value is half of what you would pay at hoity toitee venues. It's Austrian in theme, think German lite. Backendell Chicken is amazing. Duck is excellent. The ambience of the outdoor eating area overlooks the lake is a stunner.

Food was hot and excellent. View was spectacular. Service was very accommodating. Apple strudel with vanilla sauce great finish to any meal. Would definitely visit again.

The setting is beyond words..we sat outdoors with a veiw of the lake and surrounding hills. It made you feel like you where in Europe. The service was outstanding and we had an awesome meal of snitzel.

tomorrow will be our 7th time this summer on the terrace...........our favorite place....great food........great people............great view...........

I am so underwhelmed and disappointed. I was so looking forward to coming here for Thanksgiving, and my expectation of delicious food being served wasn't met. Firstly, my scallops were cut in half, which is truly just shameful, especially since the price of them was over $50. The prime rib was bland, absolutely no seasoning whatsoever, and extremely fatty. The escargot was tough and very small. Additionally, the theme of the restaurant was outdated and tacky, and in need of a Gordon Ramsey renovation.

Founds this little gem and had a wonderful time! The views are great. The food is delicious. The winery next door is a nice touch. It was a great experience and we cannot wait to go back.

Location is beautiful, amazing scenery, excellent food, friendly and attentive staff. Kind of expensive, but that's what you expect being in that part of the state.

Our wedding was on April 21st, 2018 at The Hopkins Inn. If you want a dinner party wedding for 60 or under, at the most beautiful, elegant, cozy, classy place inside, and the most beautiful surroundings and view with Lake Waramaug outside, with the best food, and a place that takes care of all the details, including baking the wedding cake, flowers on the tables, and provides wine, beer and hors d'oeuvre to guests, as well as overnight rooms, if needed, then you have found the place. The staff is the best, especially Ryan, and most especially Anke, who is the wedding coordinator. I can't say enough about how nice she is, how experienced, professional, well-organized, thoughtful and caring about your wedding, and willing to work with you and your budget beyond what would ever be expected, including easy to contact and prompt at returning calls. Our guests were fully satisfied with all the hors d'oeuvre and food served. I can't imagine how they manage to get out all those dinners, hot, and timely for everyone , at the same time as serving guests in other dining rooms of the Inn. The wedding ceremony can be held on the porch, with picturesque Lake Waramaug in the background, or in a room that was perfectly set up with an "altar" and seating for up to the 60 guests. The bride has an "aisle" to walk down. You could probably get a small 1-3 piece live musician situation in, but we played a song with ipod/speaker, and were able to play a Pandora station during dinner. You won't hear it too well with people talking, but after dinner was coming to an end, we had some music that we danced to that everyone could then hear when they were more quiet. Thank you to The Hopkins Inn for the wedding, and one of the happiest days of my life - you were such a big part of that!

Excellent food. Can t beat the views. There is a winery next door for wine tasting and gift buying.

Expensive bit worth every penny. Food cooked to perfection. Great views when eating outside but be prepared to swat away the yellow jackets this time of yr (August). And don't forget to stop at the winery to pick up a bottle of local wine .

Went here for Thanksgiving dinner (early in the day). Staff was friendly, though clearly working at capacity. Menu was classic Continental cuisine. In addition to Turkey, there was such, scallops, prime rib, pork chops as the entree. Fixed price menu included appetizers (some of which were German themed), and very nice desserts. Side dishes were basically classic Thanksgiving. Dinner was very good, although Turkey was rather bland. Had the maple syrup Indian pudding which was excellent. Solid meal in classic new England inn setting. Well worth $55, but lacked the spark that would make it memorable.

Amazing prime rib ajeu was melt in your mouth and view over lake was amazing . Bring a sweater . In fall .

Great food for a Sunday afternoon or a special occasion. The key lime pie is great. Reservations are a must.

Gorgeous views at this historic Connecticut location. Definitely worth a visit and even to stay overnight. Nice restaurant as well.

Our host was exceptional, I dont remember his name but he was wonderful, he was patient, kind and do his job well... I'll definitely be back!!

Relaxing with good food. Its worth the drive. They even a bench where you can sit and drink wine you bought by the bottle from the tasting area and look at the water. There is also like a tent in a garden area in the back with a small pond that people sit at tables and enjoy their wine at.

A wonderful place to experience rural Connecticut. Rest your bones in comfort and wake up with a fine breakfast offering from the restaurant. Their lunch and dinner menus offer more excellent dishes than you can eat in just one visit.

Very nice, was there getting ready for a wedding at the Vineyard. Rooms were small for the amount of people we had, but that was our fault! Clean, quiet, and busy during events. Beautiful views, cute rooms.

My wife and I had our wedding reception dinner with our family here. This place is beautiful. The food was delicious the service was amazing. They even supplied us with our wedding cake and the cake was amazing. If your going to have a very small intimate wedding like my wife and I did, I definitely recommend this place for dinner. We only had like 15 ppl.

Many memorable lunches here with my grandmother in the 1980s and 1990s. Beautiful location and exceptional views of Lake Waramaug.

I ate lunch here and the service was awful. I wanna say half of the seats had people in it, was not busy at all. I was waiting with my mom and sister for 20 minutes just to get bread. We had to ask twice to put our order in. I hope they see this and maybe make their staff a little less chilled out and more professional.

We have been going for dinner on our anniversary for at least 25 years now. Great place for eating a romantic dinner under the stars.

I'm here during the same lunch service of the previous reviewer. I'm having a wonderful meal. The staff has been super attentive and friendly. The staff member in lederhosen came and spoke to us about his authentic outfit and was very nice. It sounds like the previous reviewer had a singularly bad experience but I don't find it to be representative.

There aren't many restaurants in Connecticut that have outside patio seating and such a beautiful view of water under lovely old trees. The menu has many choices. The food was good.

Stayed one night during a foliage trip. Reasonable price (~$150) at the season. Lovely lake-view rooms. Beautiful decoration. Warm service.

The food here is great, but the atmosphere is unapologetically geared toward a particular clientele: WASPy, wealthy New England retirees. Do not expect to feel particularly welcome or noticed if you're under 40 (even when you're shelling out the same good money as everybody else). The management of the inn also had a few problems during our stay. We had a hangup with our reservation and ended up bouncing between two different rooms with mixed messages from the management about what they wanted us to do. And although we had been told checkout was at eleven, housekeeping was already knocking on doors at 9:55 on the last day. Sure, the place is quaint and conveniently located next to a lake and winery, but I can't say I felt particularly welcome or impressed during my stay.

Attended a special event at The Hopkins Inn. The atmostphere is very intimate and all of the rooms and dining areas are comfortable. Most important was the care from the staff. They work hard and are incredibly helpful in making the event enjoyable.

The service was such that you feel welcomed. Even small talk with the little ones helped keeping them in great spirits. The food was very good. Really the cuisine was way up on top. Excellent time.

Nice get away destination. Food always good. Picturesque outdoor and indoor window seating. Plus, their delicious house salad dressing is sold in regional grocery stores... that s a bonus! Love the Hopkins!

We go for the atmosphere and because it is a great family tradition. The primary seating is outdoors on a hill overlooking a beautiful lake. The food is German fare and is good and the service is good too.

Perfect day for lunch on the terrace at Hopkins Inn overlooking Lake Waramaug. Huge crowd including several multi generational families celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. House pate was excellent as were Weiner schnitzel and veal piccata. Hot dishes served hot, as it should be. Very generous portions, decent service and fair prices. Looking forward to our next visit.

Beautiful inn on the top of a hill overlooking the lake. Outstanding menu with a huge selection. Kind and attentive wait staff. Rooms were well maintained and clean. Vineyard literally shares the parking lot with them, so it's nice if you're looking for a wine weekend. Parents: Not the place for kids. We were staying there so we took our 3 year old with her grandmothers and parents. It took all 4 of us to keep her quiet enough for the formal setting. The staff was super helpful and accommodating. They had a kids menu they gave us verbally. No coloring or other activities so bring your own.

WOW! This place was awesome, incredible views, delicious food and lovely area. As soon as you sit, you ll be brought delicious home made bread that is so fluffy! For Appetisers we enjoyed the escagarot and clams - both seriously delicious. For mains we had the veal special and red wine Meat. A truly awesome place with welcoming service. Friends got the ceaser salad and bratwurst!

Lovely Inn with beautiful surroundings amid the vineyards and across the lake Waramaug. All rooms, however, don't have attached baths and those which have, are teeny weeny bathrooms.

Hopkins inn is like my second home... Wonderfull staff and amazing service... The guys in the restaurant are so nice and you can enjoy a coffee with a view... Rooms are so confortable specially in winter so 100% recommended

This is an extraordinary place !! My admiration has no limits! Insanely friendly staff !! Clean rooms !! Everything is designed in one style, as if you are in another world !! And the nature around the breath stops, there is a lake nearby, a great place for fishing and a picnic in nature, you can swim in the lake, there is a beach. Here you can see vineyards that are over 100 years old. In the lake you can catch carp. It definitely won't be boring here! Fresh air. In the morning, the kitchen was still closed, my husband and I wanted to drink coffee, the hostess of the establishment greeted us very warmly, invited us to the kitchen, prepared herself tea and coffee and did not charge us any money! It was very welcoming. This we have not met anywhere !!! Great stay, great place !!! Recommend!!!

My fiance and I dined out on the front terrace looking over Lake Waramaug, our favorite lake in Connecticut! Just so peaceful and beautiful.Our meals were fabulous! Service was great! Kim was our waitress and was very knowledgeable about the menu, we enjoyed her! What a memorable evening! Thank you and keep up the great work

This restaurant is a perennial favorite! The view over Lake Waramaug makes one feel that she is in Europe; however, views alone can't sustain. The food itself is fresh and delicious! The mushroom and bacon saute on the spinach salad is to die for, the sea scallops are tender and seaworthy, fresh veggies on all plates are perfectly cooked. All the meat dishes are generous and yummy. Servers are always friendly and efficient.

Our server Anna was so attentive and knowledgeable! We will be back!

I highly recommend dining at the restaurant. I would not recommend staying at the inn. The food at the restaurant is excellent. The restaurant features gourmet meals that are excellent, but please keep in mind that they will be quite expensive. The inn is underwhelming. While true to the authentic colonial aesthetic that they are keen to maintain, the rooms are woefully unequipped for the modern traveler who is likely used to amenities - such as their own bathroom in their room - or used to decor that isn't ripped straight from the late 1950s. Notably, the management of the inn itself seems secondary to that of the restaurant. Our reservations were improperly entered into the computer, leading to our room being initially unavailable. While we were upgraded to a much larger room for no additional cost, my wife and I were a left more than a little confused about whether our entire two night stay had been upgraded or if it was a single night being upgraded. The following day, I approached the front desk to ask about the issue after we received a phone call I did not manage to answer in time. At that time, I was assured that no one had called and no one indicated that there was a need to switch rooms. At three in the afternoon, I received a phone call asking us to switch rooms. I was happy to do so, although the late notice and lack of clarity about the issue suggested that the inn seemed poorly managed. Additionally, the management staff is not friendly toward younger folks or first-times to the inn. For example, after our less-than-warm reception, we went to the dining hall to see if we could eat without a reservation. Notably, someone made a bit of a snide comment when we approached, which I can only imagine had to do with our age and inexperience with the inn, as my wife and I were the only persons in attendance under the age of 65. I find this unprofessional behavior, at best, and, as a whole, I found that the staff was largely unwelcoming. Not the best behavior for running a hotel. I can't recommend staying at the inn, although the restaurant is quite good.

Reliably wonderful German/Austrian fare in a beautiful hillside country setting overlooking Lake Wauramaug, adjacent to the Hopkins Vineyard. Desserts are great and service is excellent. Dining on the patio under a canopy of tall trees is an added delight.
