The Old Brewery Tavern (ABode Chain), Canterbury Review

A great place for food and drinks, albeit a little pricey.

Came for Christmas lunch. Food was good, service was friendly. But they're hugely missing a trick by only offering a few different house wines with the meal. Would have happily spent more on good wine and a cocktail or two, having pre-paid for the meal a few weeks ago.

I came out of there unhappy, insulted and ill. Me and my wife shared a bean burger and a beef burger. I ate my halves quite quickly as I was very hungry, but my wife took only a few bites of the bean burger before realizing that it tasted a bit odd, yet sour. 10 minutes after I started to feel ache in my stomach and I ended up visiting the toilet to throw up. When I complained, the waiter and the manager could not conceive that a bean burger could go bad and make me sick. That explains it all: they serve clients bean burgers kept in the fridge for weeks. I ended up paying for everything, including 12.5% gratuity. The waiter didn't even take the responsibility to talk to the manager about my complain; I had to do it myself! Stupid me. This place should be called Old Bean Burgers.

I have mixed feelings about this pub because of a disagreement with staff. For a visitor the pub is an attractive looking pub with a fair range of beers and a good eating area.

Pretty bad experience. Slow bar service (e.g.,chap at bar sipping his own drink instead of serving), food wasn't great and an overall disappointing experience.

Chef couldn't abide by my dietary requirements. I don't think this is a hard thing to do!

Stickiest patch of floor in front of a bar that I have EVER got stuck to! Prices OK. Good for Xmas parties.

Christmas Dinner & Party: OMG we all sat freezing whilst eating Christmas Dinner, all of us had our coats on, not a care in the world from staff. This wasn't just our table but at least 4 others. The veg served? brussels, nothing else! Seriously i wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend anyone to book a Christmas Dinner there.

Poor planning on my part meant we were in Canterbury with 5 adults and 5 children (all under 5), and nowhere to eat. We stumbled across The Old Brewery Tavern by accident, and were lucky to do so. The food was good, as was the beer and the children ate free. We weren't an easy party to accommodate, but tables were moved and menus adapted, and the kids got an activity pack so were made up. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful so top marks all round.

It's okay here. It is attached to the hotel at the front. In the evenings the chairs and tables are moved away and it becomes a dancefloor and they bring out a DJ set. However the acoustics are not great at all and there isn't really enough space to dance. When we were there, everyone was crowded in a small bottleneck between the bar area and the dining area turned DJ booth. As the only way off the dancefloor is accross it back to the bar this means that you are constantly being pushed past and this can get very annoying, with drinks getting spilt and glasses broken.

Great experience here. Full beer menu with some interesting off the beaten track options with some great food.

Historic pub serving typical pub fare and good selection of beers. Staff friendly and efficient. Worth a visit.

The staff was really nice and very gracious. They stayed open a little later than intended, and we had a really great conversation with one of the waiters. And I can't say enough good things about the dessert - we had sticky toffee pudding with caramel ice cream. Yum!

Serving the same beers as whetherspoons for double the price at half the quality

Okay if you don't mind sick on the floor in the beer garden.

It was a while ago, but I wasn't impressed when we went there. Had a burger and the waiter seemed offended and snobbish that we asked for ketchup...? It wasn't a gourmet meal! Personally wouldn't go back.

This place is disgusting. My husband was sick from their bean burger and they didn't care for it.

Very quiet intimate bar, good range of drinks. TV screens kept losing signal which was slightly annoying!

Nice, efficient service, tasty freshly prepared food, relaxed and contemporary atmosphere, reasonable prices. It's a pity that we went out for dinner without a real hunger, because the simple plates we ordered were really nice! I would definitely recommend this to friends for a dinner and after dinner night out.

Filled with idiots, nice garden on a quiet evening however.

Good atmosphere, good sounds, no cask ales on but hey, we had a very good time.

I went to this restaurant with my friends yesterday. We arrived around 7:30. We ordered drinks right away a food few mins later. We recived drinks around 8 and been served food around 9. I don't recommend this restaurant if some's starving. I've noticed as well that customers who came in later got their food earlier than us. Food was good but portion were small. Nice place but horrible service

Super warm welcome, smiling service. We are (really) well served for a frankly reasonable price. The vegetarian burger is just huge !! The fries are good (word of ch'ti) and obviously the fish'n'chip also deposits.

It's fine, better than average pub food which makes up in presentation what it lacks in finesse. Service was a little personal for my taste, the front of house manager ( I presume) was trying to do a good job but his execution was a bit off.

Friday night was not very good and the Drinks selection was terrible.

OMG The food was mind blowing!!! Pork belly and starter of mackerel. We shared both and it seems they gave us a large serving because they knew they we were sharing. The Desert pana cotta with mango with so good too..!!!

Ale was off. Dark and busy and too loud. Maybe I'm too old.

the place itself is quite nice... the bouncers at night though are among the worst I've ever come across. seen them beat people up for no reason

A nice friendly welcome. Only called in for coffee( very nice) but will return at some point for a meal and a pint

Food was very bland and the whole restaurant was freezing cold.

Service wasn't all that either, avoid.

Upon going out in Canterbury for a colleagues stag do on Saturday 10th may. we was told by the bouncers that we was not allowed into the building (nighttime DJ nights) because there was too many of us (only 10 people smartly dressed) we even said we would hand over are ID's so that we wouldn't cause any trouble. nope wouldn't allow us in. but then was the most interesting bit he allowed 40 people in. we asked why, he ignored us. so i ask why?! BTW this is the 1st time this has happened before.

Lovely bar. Lovely lads behind the bar. No females behind the bar, which was weird. They were collecting glasses though. All a bit odd tbh.

Do not go here, you have been warned. This was without doubt the worst food and service I have ever received, absolute rubbish! Who on earth serves only Brussel sprouts with a Christmas, nothing else just overcooked Brussel sprouts. Everything else on the plate was hard to identify. Some of the staff behind the bar were rude

It's a decent place, but it depends on what's being hosted here.

Its a classic, not changed in years but it does it well. Good space and atmosphere with a good space for shaking your body and showing off your moves...
