Disappointing is my one word summary. The extensive menu had me anticipating one of the best meals in years; the presentation of each course was straight out of a photo shoot. Service was fine; the setting elegant in an old fashioned bordello way. But the food...
I ordered the Oregon foraged wild mushroom bagatelle. The "butter pastry" was overly crisp, bland, like a paper thin piece of day old toast; the shallot jus was too salty and strong, overpowering the mushrooms. The mushroom filling itself was like something you'd get out of a can. I expressed my specific concerns to our waiter who said he would inform the chef. My entree, the oven pressed Maine lobster with local shellfish and pork belly looked gorgeous, but the shellfish (mussels and clams) were close to flavorless, the pork belly tasted like something sliced off a pork roast that had been sitting in the refrigerator too long, and the lobster was also lacking flavor (as was the citrus sauce) although the texture was fine. Not quite ready to give up, my companion and I ordered the hazelnut semifreddo for dessert. It was more like a whipped cream in texture than like a semifreddo and had very little flavor. The "candied" hazelnuts sprinkled around were a bit rancid.
Since it was my birthday, the waiter did bring a candle and a chocolate "Happy Birthday" inscription on the dessert plate.
Aside from the unsatisfactory food, the failure of staff to offer to remove the charge for the mushroom starter or to comp the dessert since it was my birthday, was a bit surprising. I've rarely had occasion to complain about the quality or taste of my meals at finer restaurants, but on the few occasions when something was unsatisfactory, the server would either offer to replace the item or to remove the charge. And many places offer a complimentary dessert for special occasions such as birthdays.
If only the flavor balances of the food matched the presentation, this would've been a wonderfully memorable meal. Instead, it was memorable like a bad dream.
