My wife and I were due to stay at this hotel on Sunday 9th April but unfortunately our daughter took ill and had to be rushed to hospital. The room had to be cancelled, the hotel took full payment including an add-on breakfast. They showed no empathy what so ever for what has been a very traumatic and stressful few days. At the very least they could have offered us a cheaper room at a later date but they were not prepared to make any form of compromise. And I quote for the duty manager "everyone has exceptional circumstances".

We had a lovely 4 nights here for my husbands 70th the room was very clean and quite spacious, Staff were very friendly and could not do enough for you, the food in the piano bar was excellent very well presented and cooked to perfection. Thank you for the sparkling wine on the house for my husbands birthday. The only down side for me was the lift being out of order, But we will return soon I hope. The location for the Minister was perfect just a short stroll to the city gate.

Very good staff. Nice food. Fantastic location for central York, short walking distance to centre and Cathedral.
The not so good points.

The hotel is a nice old building, the rooms are nice however we didnt get the room that had come up on the site while booking. Nice quiet bar although the staff were very unenthusiastic and looked like they didn't want to be there. There More

I stayed here with my girlfriend and we were both very pleased with the place. The staff is absolutely fantastic. They're super nice and take care of you. The place is really nice and cosy. I didn't try the restaurant because I stayed only one night, but it seemed very nice too. I definitely recommend the hotel. It is located super close to basically everything.

Picturesque building, large and impeccably furnished rooms. Staff is friendly and available. Restaurant is good, with a menu offer of high quality to price ratio. The hotel is conveniently close to the city center and at a short walk from the railway station.

Booked the Bunker Room for two nights, really quirky. Would not suit everyone as the name suggests there are NO windows. We were offered change of room if Bunker didn't suit us. Staff all pleasent and helpful. Breakfast lovely. Will return

Stayed at The Churchill 3 nights 26th -28th May - Great location - Lovely building - all the reception staff very friendly and helpful as were the bar staff, our room was a ( standard double ) however bigger enough for the two of us and was spotless - also the bathroom was a very generous size.

Went for our wedding anniversary stunning place. Staff could not be nicer, helpful friendly. Food to die for. York what a lovely lively place. Taxi drivers what a laugh. Will be going back this November. Perfect.

Nice hotel, lovely restaurant and bar area the staff are really nice. Room was lovely and spacious. Only recommendation would be to avoid room 115 as there appears to be a constant humming/whirring noise.

Never again!

Never again!

The standard rooms are tiny and dark. 50cm on each side of the bed. The window is face to face with the neighbours' window which is litterally at a touching distance. Not only the room was very dark but also we had to chose between leaving the curtains opened to allow some natural light but offering our neighbours a glorious view into our room or closing the curtains to have a little bit of privacy...
We've left a photo of the window on google map so you can judge by yourself. It is quite different from what they advertise on the website!

We asked to change room but were told that all standard rooms were the same. As we were disappointed and frustrated, we asked to talk to the manager - John - but could not get hold of him during the 48h of our stay. We left him our contact details when we left but did not hear from him.

There is no value for money in this hotel. York's Premier Inn is also well located, half price and at least you know what you get. Our advise: do not waste your time or your money at York's Churchill hotel.

Always enjoy staying here, classy place with great rooms and very helpful staff. Love the breakfast here. Good location, short walk to centre. Have found that parking is a little tight for larger vehicles but not impossible.

Wonderful stay in The Churchill. Friendly staff who could not do more to help you. Always a smile . Hotel is spotless. Food in an amazing restaurant was top class. Attention to decor in every room. Location perfect, walk in to town not too far. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We been there twice. Very clean and comfortable hotel. They upgraded us for a suite on our honeymoon and we stayed 2 years later for a quick trip to York. The restaurant is great quality and they have a nice bar too. The staff are friendly and amazing.

Dear John
I was told it was an online booking. How I have been spoken to with no empathy for the situation by staff at The Churchills I am pleased that I and none of my wedding party will be spending any time there

Our experience was very different from other guests maybe because of the room we had.
Staff were very polite and professional and always helpful. On arrival the main reception was very hot with no air conditioning on what was a very warm day. The room also had no air conditioning and was very hot. This was aggravated I believe because the room was below ground level. The room was very small as was the bathroom.
Once in the bathroom you couldn't move to the sink unless you close the door to give you an idea of the size of the space available.
The room lighting was bad and could not see properly in areas such as wardrobe and dressing table area for the ladies.
To top everything off the mattress was hard and so very uncomfortable.
On a positive note once outside the room the remaining areas around the hotel were very good.
If you stay in this hotel, do not accept a room that is below ground level!

We arrived late from Oxford last night Dec 4. The night clerk very welcoming and informative. Showed us the room, the ammenities, the next day breakfast set up and suggestion for the next day. He was superb!

Lovely hotel just a couple of minutes from the city centre and major tourist attractions. Hotel is extremely clean and rooms are nicely decorated. Another plus point is the friendly staff. Highly recommend.

Amazing welcome and introduction, cannot fault the service at all. Location is great, short walk from York. On a main road but didn't notice anything. Only downside was where my room was based I could hear everyone on either side of me and the bed wasn't the most comfortable. I would book again though.

Absolutely wonderful hotel, the staff cannot do enough for you, especially Ian on reception. Lovely room, clean and tidy. The hotel is a steady 10 min walk from the minster and other attractions in York. It was a joy to stay in this Georgian house hotel.

So so. Had to move rooms in the middle of the night due to noisy plumbing. The full English breakfast would have been nice apart from the sausage looked pink in the middle. If you're in York and stuck for somewhere to stay it's okay but it's not one that I will be recommending to my friends.

Great location to visit York at 8 minutes from the Minster very clean and stylish friendly staff at the reception. We didn't try the breakfast and restaurant but they look like nice from the menu ( maybe the breakfast a little bit expensive), the only down side was the heat, our room was boiling but to be fair this year it is different.

Room was small for the price. This was not the issue though.

Main issue was the bullying of staff behind the bar. Not a happy house in that respect - I don't think anybody got on well - nearly went up to complain. I didn't want to lose my temper as this was a birthday gift from my partner so should be relaxing... I hate watching or seeing people bullied at work. The kitchen was blasting out Eminem whilst rest of the bar was laid back music. Why? everyone could hear it?

The cleaners on a morning, from 8:30 were ALWAYS having a conversation outside our room (119) until 10:30 EVERY MORNING - even though our 'do not disturb' sign was on the door. One morning a new visitor was nearly let in our room whilst we were in bed - until we heard a 'sorry wrong room' I'll go get the right card.... Everything else a little tatty too, See pictures. Cables taped up on lamps - you need a PAT audit????

I can't comment on the food, we didn't eat in the restaurant, as from the bar you could see the staff messing about in the kitchen - not professional, such a shame, so we went elsewhere. Chef seemed to drink more than he cooked on the Saturday night. Pints kept flowing in for him.

Again, such a shame as it's not cheap to stay and it's location to York great..

We signed out and was asked about our stay. I reluctantly said 'it was...ok' but before my next sentence finished we were on 'the bar bill' sir and wished a safe trip........I wish I'd said 'hold up' this hasn't been a great experience but.... Instead we just won't go back.

Beautiful hotel, inside and out. The details in decoration are wonderful and a great tribute to Winston Churchill. Our room had lovely features, like a ceiling window to look at the stars at night, and a bulldog decal in the shower which was a lovely touch. The staff were fantastic and couldn't be more helpful. The one downfall I would say is that it's a little tricky getting onto the car park from the main road, as it's quite a tight entrance. But overall we had a perfect time.

Tiny room. Tiny bed. Food in restaurant included fish and chips and pie both served with frozen peas. Not 2 rosette standard at all.
Noise from heating system all night in the room. No sleep.
Awful place.

Arrived thursday to this wonderful quirky hotel that delivered everything it promised, to two frazzled nhs admin staff, needing a relaxing retreat and just a bit of normality for a few days. We arrived thursday and was greeted by the lovely ian on reception who was friendly, welcoming and very informative. - credit to the hotel. We stayed in room 132, which was spotlessly clean and very spacious. Comfortable bed, tea and coffee facilities, with a gorgeous bathroom. The room had been sanitized on our arrival and sealed up and could be done again when we wanted it doing. We felt very safe and all social distancing and hygeine standards where shown by all staff at all times. We opted for breakast, and had a couple of evening meals, plenty of choice, delicious food especially the fish and chips which was amazing. Service was superb, waiting staff very friendly. We also had drinks on the patio in the lovely garden and sampled one of the pizzas which were cooked outside in the garden - prawn and chille absolutely delicious. All ordered and paid for by downloading an app to the phone. This was a brilliant idea given the current climate and was delivered promptly to the table. The hotel is perfect for sight seeing, 5 minute walk into the centre. Although the downfall was not all the attractions were open, though we did manage to book for the re-opening of the Jorvic Centre, which is a must thoroughly enjoyed it. We did do the river cruise and the bus tour, making the most of our stay and enjoyed walks. It did get very crowded on Saturday, social distancing was quite challenging. All in all, we have had a fantastic time at The Churchill Hotel, superb and we will definately re-visit.

Dined in the brasserie and had a lovely meal. Generous portions and beautifully cooked. We tried the chicken breast and cod in beer batter - excellent! Best cod I've had in England. My friend enjoyed her tender chicken breast with fresh cranberries, and wonderfully roasted parsnips. Service was warm and attentive.

A beautifully decorated hotel close to the city centre. A lovely hotel to stay at. 5 minutes walk to the centre of York. My wife and I booked a suite for a over night stay which was very nice. Everything was spotless which is a credited to the house keeping staff. They obviously put in a lot of hard work. All the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay pleasurable. We didn't eat in the restaurant so can't comment on the food , but a hotel of this calibre has got to provide a variety of fine dining. Drinks were a bit pricey but then again what hotel isn't. Because we didn't book direct with the hotel we did have to pay extra for overnight parking. That was a bit cheeky I thought. Overall we would definitely book to stay here again if we return to the city in future which we hope to do. Thank you for a lovely stay.
