Behnke's is phenomenal. We've been going here for years, and have always been impressed with their variety-- fruit trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, water plants, the list goes on. And the people who work here are so friendly and knowledgeable. It can be crazy on that first nice weekend in the spring, but really this place is a goldmine. You can get cheaper plants at Home Depot, but you can't bet better plants, better service, or better varieties of plants than Behnke's has.

Everything that a gardner would want and need. Knowledgeable staff about plants, herbs, soil and gardening. Huge inventory of live plants, trees, seeds and garden tools.
A bit pricey, but by far the best selection of any nursery around, this place is huge and it's a fun and interesting place to go to. Usually have good customer service.
I bought two sets of orchids from here, and they are absolutely stunning even two years later. Carol is the best, and the nursery itself has loads of events for everyone to enjoy.
I always find what i want here with the assistance of their superb customer service. My wife gets angry at me when i spend sometimes up to an hour looking at stuff for the yard. I can't help they have such a great environment to shop. Im never pressured into buying something i do not need or want. This place is excellent.
It is the go-to nursery in the MD/DC area by far! Their selection of plants, flowers, trees, and other related items are supurb! Their staff are very knowledgeable and very helpful. I wouldn't want to go any other place for my gardening needs!
I cant believe they are closing! I make my pilgrimage from Sykesville to shop here, my mother stops by on her way to visit from Pennsylvannia. This is one of the best nurseries I have found. We are absolutely devastated!
Great selection, fun store, friendly knowledgable staff, and the prices can't be beat. I come here for the houseplants section which is always stocked with gorgeous healthy specimens. I almost always find an unusual plant species or cultivar to take home too!
Behnke Nurseries is one of the best know and established in the region. If you are looking for a primer gardiners paradise be sure to visit. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Garden tool cleaning and shapening is shown in photo.
Probably the best nursery in the MD-DC area. They always have many more options than other nurseries (e.g. Good Earth, American Plant, etc.). Prices are competitive with other local nurseries. Staff is VERY helpful- ask a question and they will have a good answer. If you are looking for a particular plant, call them or email them and see if they can get it. I have done this, and they will make it work if they can. Tons of bulbs in fall. Only downside: only one location, so it's hard to get over there often (which the wife is probably happy about). Overall, really like this place.
Excellent selection of plants, variety is above all other nurseries and hardscaping with expert staff to assist with selection and advice on how to care for plants or nurse them back to good health.
The person who assisted us gave us all the information we needed for a community project. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a place to learn how to start a garden.
I had heard so many great things about this place and it didn't disappoint me at all. The employee here are very helpful and courteous and would answer my questions without hesitation. The prices are very reasonable and am absolutely pumped about my new baby plants. Would highly recommend this place!
Never disappointed when I come here, was looking for some nice indoor plants and they had an ample selection AND unique plants I haven t seen at other places!
Just heard as well that Behnke's is closing. I just started coming here for about 2 years and they are seriously the best nursery I've ever been to! I always call this plant Disney world because it is so magical. Even the last time I came I felt so jittery (as if I had a lot of coffee and even though I had none), all because I was so happy and excited to be there. Their amazing variety of healthy plants ranging from small to large, indoor and outdoor, and succulent to house plants are unbeatable. But putting their plants aside, the staff are also amazing, knowledgeable, and nice people! I will miss them so much!! They've really helped me to grow my originally non-existent green thumb.
I love Behnke! They always have classes going on and different events. I really had a beautiful time at the annual orchid show last year. The selection and the tour was amazing. I will say that their orchid selection is pretty boring consistenting mainly, and only, of Phalaenopsis. I've haven't gone there yet and saw other genera. Not only that, their Phals. are pretty expensive, never going below $35.99 unless there is a 25% off sale on tropical plants. I haven't found a reason for this mark up on the plants either. Their phals are no different or any more healthy than the phals at the big box stores. I will say that many of the phals I have purchased there were a little larger than some I've gotten at box stores, so many that constitutes the cost? However, I've seen smaller phalaenopsis plants there with the same price so maybe not. It would also be nice if the plants were identified with more than just their common name, but I do understand they come that way from the wholesalers so I can't really ding them for that -- I guess you can't have everything. Great nursery for everything else though with a very knowledgeable staff. I highly recommend them.
Behnke's has lots of new and pretty pots some of the earth tone ones are our favorites. Spring is around the corner so the seeds are in for the spring now.
Had an amazing experience until I ran into a behnke employee name carol allen asked for help and she was very rude and disrespectful. Most everyone at behnke is amazing but having people that work for the company like her hurts the company more than helps.
Incredible nursery. Every flowering plant, shrub, and tree you can imagine in indoor greenhouse and outdoor lot. Exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful staff. Be sure to check out the bonsai. Ample parking.
With a local reputation as the Tiffany's of nurseries, Behnke's has served the area for decades. Alas, despite its high prices or, perhaps, because of them, this establishment is unfortunately due to close permanently next year. This location always had a vast selection of ornamentals and vegetables, well-crafted displays, and a large hot-house featuring exotic plants, cactii and succulents. It's an interesting trip just to walk around the buildings and grounds. Their staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. It appears most employees have been there a long time. They also offered various seminars and activities. They have a wide variety of plants, shrubs, saplings and all products and accessories related to gardening. Although, a bit expensive, it'll be a sad day when they finally close their doors. .
This garden nursery is very racist and very rude. I was here on Friday and it was my first time shopping. I had asked a lady to help me with directions with where plants are located her name was Becky T from customer service, she told me This is America speak English! And then the next representative her name was Kathleen or Katherine at customer service and she came around to help and said Yeah I don t understand you, need to speak English. I am applauded and upset at the fact that stuff like this is still happening in the US and especially in PG County since PG is diverse. The only person who was understanding and helpful was a girl named Carmelita at the cash register! She truly made me put a smile back on my face. And lastly I must say I was not speaking Spanish, it was my accent and my accent is not that thick. This nursery needs to fix there employees and get some like the young lady at the register who makes people smile and brightens their day! Never coming back here again! And I will make that known to everyone!
Update: After emailing Behnke's president , I was contacted by by the nursery manager, who was appalled at the oversight. She could not find the original order (doesn't Teleflora confirm the order is received by the fulfilling florist? No?) and sent a beautiful arrangement at no charge with a handwritten note of apology to my mom. In the future, I will be happy to call Behnke Nurseries directly rather than go through a middleman. Thank you, Behnke Nurseries. * * * * * I ordered a Thanksgiving centerpiece through Teleflora, who selected Behnke Nurseries to create and deliver it. The order was confirmed by Teleflora on November 4 for November 21 delivery-- I knew, with the holiday, ordering at the last minute might prove a challenge.Behnke never delivered. When I contacted Teleflora, they contacted Behnke Nurseries, and was told that "the system goes down sometimes." Given that my order was confirmed November 4, I find it unbelievable that "the system" was down for three weeks.Apparently Teleflora was not notified "the system" was down, and since they didn't know, there was no way to change the order to a florist actually interesting in completing the sale. I am, of course, letting the recipient know Behnke Nurseries was the failure point. I strongly urge Teleflora to cut ties with them, and I strongly urge Behnke Nurseries to stop pretending to fulfill online orders. As in this case, so often flowers are meant to be a surprise, and it is painful and hurtful to have to ask, "Did you receive the flowers" and be told, no, nothing ever arrived.
Great place to shop for Christmas plants, and trees! Today it is very colorful with all kinds of poinsettias and nice smell of Frasier trees. It feels like Christmas!
The plants from Behnke's are always healthy and grow beautifully, the selection is impressive, and the staff are incredibly attentive. I once had an issue with a sale, and Stephanie went truly above and beyond to ensure that the problem was resolved and that we were happy with the result. This is the kind of independently-owned business at which I'm happy to spend my money; top-notch!
This is the place to go in the DC area for succulents and bonsai (and succulent bonsai). Their succulents are tucked away st one if the ends of the nursery so ask an employee for directions if you need to because it is so worth it. They have an outstanding selection at any given time and the inventory rotates so you'll always find a new plant. They have numerous cacti species, hard succulents and soft. They sell in various sizes from 2 inch pots with a single plant all the way up to large arrangements with lots of varieties. This place beats out all of the hardware store garden sections by miles. If you're anything like me you'll leave Behnke with more succulents then you have room for at home and you'll love every minute of it.
This is the best nursery in the area. Behnke's Beltsville spans acres, and they have any plant you can name. I go here for native plants (MD Coastal Plain), and have had much success with all their plants. I've bought herbs, hostas, and big bushes here. I've also admired their selection of trees and roses.
Most of the nursery's stock is in warehouses and lots on the ground. They have a nice selection of indoor plants, too, as well as a decent-sized selection of supplies (pots, garden gear, fencing, etc.) but I find their gear overpriced, though very high-end. Prices for plants are competitive. Special orders possible.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They can answer your questions and then some! They are all on walkie-talkies so they can immediately call for back-up.
The site is clean and well-maintained. Behnke Florist is next door. Plenty of free parking, delivery service for large orders, handy shopping carts, and soda machines create a worthwhile shopping experience. I'm particularly fond of their creative and lovely garden displays.
I love this place, and go here annually. Near the registers, check out their free information center, where a hundred brochures can educate you on everything from native plants to planting trees.
Great selection of flowers that will last!!!! Every flower I have purchased looks amazing, and I highly recommend this nursery. The staff are knowledgeable, and very friendly.
Lots of people there ready to help in any problem or question you may have. My son and I went in to get some seeds to plant some vegetables. Just about every person we past by was asking if we need help with anything. They are a very knowlagable group of people. Some prices maybe slightly higher than other places, but with the knowlagable staff to give you all the facts you need to know. Or will find someone else who can give you the correct information.
Plants are well taken care of and abundant. Staff is knowledgable and friendly ...except if you walk in 5 minutes before they close. I wish they sent out coupons and I signed up as a member but don't get any emails or mail :-/
The best garden store in the DC Metro area. I go to Behnke's not only for the beautiful healthy plants and plant variety but for the gardening advice from the expert staff that works there. They answer even the most complex questions about all aspects of gardening and on any plant for the garden that you can think of. Customer service is excellent. I am really going to miss Behnkes.
I like this Store. They have experts in anything you can think of. They are more expensive than say, Costco, but they are great. Their vegetable plant selection is the best in town and a fair price. Selection is huge! Very knowledgeable about lawns too! One star off for prices. You can sign up for mail and specials. I got $10 off at the start of spring!
How lucky are the locals (or students) or visitors (like me) to be able to walk thru a priceless collection of art. Really big names are represented here. Come and pretend you own the place, and you will be reminded of what you have forgotten. So much fun! .....and it's free!
Called asking for bonsai. Showed up. Blown away by the selection. They have every plant you can imagine. Every supply. They staff is tremendous. This place in a gardener's oasis.
I moved to Beltsville 55 years ago. Only a few businesses in the area and along the US 1 corridor in and around the area was Behnke's nursery. It was my spring garden pilgrimage for every one of the 50 years I have been married. It was a garden oasis that lasted for generations. I feel like an old friend died.
They will pretty much have everything you need, but be ready to pay top dollar. Their selection is great and the quality of the plants are all excellent. I can't ever get out of there without spending over $100 on just plants.
Would rate Behnke Nursery at zero stars, if possible. As part of two separate Saturday visits, purchased nearly $2,000 worth of plants and planting services. Thereafter, dealt with terrible and somewhat non-responsive customer service when dealing with the single individual responsible for arranging installation. After receiving contradictory statements, as well as information not mentioned within planting services contract, was ultimately told it would not be possible to plant the items at our home due to the amount of work needed. After much wasted time and aggravation, can only recommend others seek another nursery who will actually provide quality service!
Sadly Behnke's officially closed for good June 15, 2019. Long standing family run business is no longer. As a life long PG County resident tough losing an iconic business tough.
