If you're looking for a world of beer, look no further. You are simply spoiled for choice at Surly brewing, where there is typically 40+ beers on tap for drinking. On top of the incredible selection, there is great food abound. On the ground floor is their beer hall, where you have access to all their taps and major food items. Upstairs the beer selection is more limited, but you'll also find amazing New England style pizza (go while their clam pizza is available!). I can't recommend Surly more.

Main bar and food are equally amazing! Pizza bar upstairs blows hard. Imagine the worst service of your life and mediocre pizza. You've now completed a mental tour of Surly's biggest mistake.
Ruins all other brewery experiences. I've been to a handful of breweries and I have to say, nothing beats Surly. It's starting to become a tradition between my friend group to start going up there for birthdays now and do the tour. Colby is the best tour guide in the business. The tap room is massive in size as well as numbers of beers on tap. Their food is awesome as well. Looking forward to the opening of their pizza place upstairs. Well worth the 2 and a half hour drive from home to Minneapolis.
Overall, A great place to check out if you love beer, a great place to go for meeting up with friends, and a great place to make some new friends.
6/1/2016 Original rating 1 star....Destination bank.... This place prints money. If you go ten blocks away you can buy their beer cheaper at a bar for 3 to 4 dollars a pint. I understand economics but this is joke city! It defines the whole brewery scene. They should go check out St. Arnold's brewery in Texas if they want to understand how to build a legitimate cult following.
3/1/2018 Update I don't enjoy giving this place five stars but someone new must be working there or maybe money talks. The beer is great but all the other details make this place five stars. Crowd control is huge and with the new pizza place coming in upstairs. All the other little details add up. I don't really care that you overprice your beer anymore. Keep up the good work!
Our server was very knowledgeable about the beers and was able to answer my questions thoroughly. service was very quick. The beer and food were very good
Great staff, great food, great beer and great environment. Packed but still enough room to have to yourself if you really want to stand in a secluded corner like me. Love this place but still sad that Furious doesn't taste like it did at the other location.
Surly is not geared toward people who want to try a microbrewery. This was very crowded. College kid heavy too. Due to the crowd, we tried to ask the bartender questions and he was quite dismissive. No help and not friendly. The patio with the firepits looked amazing. The buzz was enticing. Sadly, staff disappointed.
A great atmosphere, amazing beer, and delicious food. Even if your not into tats and piercings, give Surly the chance. I cannot emphasize this enough, Surly Brewing is always a good decision.
Went for a work dinner and had to sit at multiple different tables not close to each other. Was really. Yay for a Wednesday night. Wide verity of beer, mostly IPA's and dark beers. The food was ok. Way more options for beer than food.
2018: Stopped in for dinner and drinks. We were advised several times on approach that they were cash only for the next 3 hours & no food service d/t an outage. These things happen... We were told there was a food truck out back and we could grab some grub and bring it back to have with our brews. Bartender was heavy handed - and the the beer was excellent. [#BA pentagram and 11 part A]... ohhh power came on 2 hrs early, so we got food! Brussels, Guacamole, Pork Frites, and Mussels - every item on point - Upgrading to 5 stars as I watch the staff wirk like a well oiled machine.
Mar 2019; update:
Hog Frites: Simply put - fries smothered in deliciousness. (Smoked pork, cheese, veggies) Pretzel: pimento cheese good but that punch of horseradish in the mustard... ohhhh be still my heart! Pure perfection. Yes, I often judge places based on their mustard alone, deservedly. Brussel Sprouts: Crisp-tender, drenched in lime and cilantro. It doesn't get better than this.
I want to say some of the dishes are heavy on oil and I don't like greasy food, but, at the same time, it works.
Then there's the beer (& possibly dessert by the time we knock out another beer or 2) Staff still work as an amazing team. No wait, whatever person happens by HAPPILY checks on you, takes your empties, offers refills. A beautiful and rare find.
This place is huge! Once I was done marveling at the retro-modern decor, I tried a number of different beers. I am a big fan of sours, and Surly had numerous great examples of this style on tap.
The food was also great. I highly recommend the Brussels sprouts appetizer!
Pretty good food and beer, but for some reason the last couple times I go here it... upsets my stomach. I hear this complaint a lot so I'm not sure what the problem is, I think its the beer.
The atmosphere was pretty fun and they allow pets outside. The brews were fantastic. However, if you order food, you don't get much for what you pay for. You are paying $ for "art" food
Went there for my Son's birthday party as he is a big Surly fan, very crowded and could not find a table. We had reservations for upstairs, thought that would be fun. The way to order was very confusing and did not even see a burger on the menu. Not very SURLY like. Food was overpriced and small portions, our waitress had to speak in 6 languages just to explain the food. 200 bucks later and not a fan at all, hope they get the ship righted.
One of my favorite tap rooms in the US. Usually crowded, but the beer-only line at the end of the bar is a lifesaver. Outside "patio" space is great three seasons of the year. Taproom food menu is small, but tasty and worth the wait.
I really don t understand what it is with this place. Many years ago when I was younger, the door staff made fun of my voice when I came here with my family. Today, they refused to serve me after I presented my (valid) ID, and the long-haired bartender was extraordinarily unkind about it. I was dumbfounded and embarrassed.
My cousin really got me into Surly, and I was excited to enjoy one of my first brews as a legal adult with them. Sadly, Surly has created multiple negative experiences for me that have really just made me sad. I wish they would make it right. I want to like this place.
It was awesome but packed. I can't wait to come back and be able to sit down right away. There's a line for both the outside patio or inside sitting. The food is effing delicious and their beer choices are plentiful.
I used to love going to surleys. The food, atmosphere, and drinks are wonderful. The people who work there really make the difference and would go that extra mile to make sure I had a good visit.
That being said, hearing these amazing employees are being fired for attempting to unionize is disgusting. And in the middle of a pandemic??? This lack of care towards those who work here by the owner means I'll never be coming back.
The tour was fun and informative. Our guide answered our questions and told us the story of Surly and the beer-making process. Our beer tasting was great and we learned even more about the process of making a great beer. I would highly recommend this tour!
We did the free tour (not much actual touring) and stopped after for a drink. The beers were a little bland and pricey. Surly has a more commercial feel (due in part to the size of the facility) than some of the other small breweries in MN. Wouldn t be my first choice for absolute beer lovers but is a nice place to spend the afternoon.
If you like beer you will love this place and if you don't, you'll love the food. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and patrons. I drive 70 miles just to have a beer and lunch with family and friends. Hats off to Surly Brewery.
We read about their pizza expansion and added it to our trip itinerary. It was so delicious! Pictured above is the Dream Master pizza and below is the Italian Chopped salad. The pizza was very unique but tasty and came out fast. We also enjoyed playing games and the IPA pitcher we got. My only complaint is they have a Wednesday Game Night special we didn t notice until after we had already ordered but it was exactly what we ordered plus dessert for $13 cheaper than what we paid.
Great destination! First time in Minnesota and this was the first place I went to. Love it! 10/10 would recommend and next time I'm in town, ill be sure to stop by!
First visit. Good beer selection and bartender was very helpful. To much snow to sit outside but the area is huge. Looks like a great area to sit, have a fire and drink good beer with friends. Burger and fries was good. Many families on a Sunday afternoon and a nice mix of people. Lots of parking. I'll go back for sure.
We came for dinner while on vacation but there was a 2 hour wait. Decided we wouldn t waste the trip and headed up stairs for pizza. The beer was good but the pizza was incredible! Some very interesting topping choices but they work. Highly recommend!
The pizza is tasteless, the bartenders are rude. The short bartender that wears his cap backwards with the beard and worked upstairs is especially rude. He tried short changing 3 people in our party. He also poured taps with 2 inches of foam on top.
Not a place for OLD LADIES. I order the pork shoulder and brussel sprouts everytime after trying everything on the menu, big Ole meal, comes out quickly, and it's amazing....also they always rocking bomb @$$ music....and not that I need to say it but their beer is FIRE...And if u don't know, now you know...FAVORITE SPOT IN THE TWIN CITIES
Long wait - about an hour for a group of 8. The food was fantastic, delivered as it's ready (meal by meal) and not for the whole table. And there's Surly beer. Enjoy.
Positives: great environment that's chill and welcoming. Easy to host events and small get-togethers with enough space for everyone to mingle and have fun. Great variety of beer. Parking is better than many of the other breweries we've seen. There is a full lot and street parking that isn't on a busy road.
Negatives: Food isn't great. The pizza was the only thing that the people we went with liked. We ourselves ordered the guac and it was just okay. Very bland. One of our friends ordered the pulled pork with sides and it was the saltiest thing we've ever tasted. Even with a mouthful of mashed potatoes, it was overwhelming. He barely had a few bites before calling it quits. If we ever go back, it'd be for the pizza and beer, but not for anything else.
Specific negative experience: My husband signed his e-receipt after we ordered and the waitress later tipped herself $3.00. The amount that we signed for was different than what we were charged, and we're upset at this pettiness. If we knew there was a way to tip on the order, we would've, but all she asked us to do was sign and didn't show us anything else.
Great place to see a state of the art brewing company. They have a pizza restaurant, a sit down restaurant , and a gift shop. Many different types of beer. I had a lot of fun. The tour takes one hour and very interesting.
Went here last weekend for lunch and the beer I had was good and the chicken sandwich was too until it wasn t when the food poisoning set in that night. I was the only one who got sick and coincidentally the only one in our group who ate a chicken sandwich. Morale of the story go for the beer, not the food.
It's definitely a spectacle. Not sure what to say beyond that. They have the fun once-in-a-while Surly beer, so that's cool, I guess. Outdoor seating is nice, although you can't get food away from the building. Inside is crazy; too many little kids, too many people in general, and the space is too open for my taste. Fun if you're there with a group, wouldn't bother spending the time/money for 2-4 people. Expect ~45+ minute waits for a table.
1st time. Have to get your hand stamped, why? Over rated. Food average. Waiter was rude. Prices ok. Nice selection of ales. Ambience--lousy. Go once if you need to, then move on to something better.
Great food and quick service! We enjoyed our beers - Rose and Longbottom. Be aware it's a louder environment so a challenge for a hearing aids user in the beer hall. We did not go to the pizza area or patio. Fun place!
A nice brewery to visit. The tour was average but informative. The tour is a deal though with free samples and a free pint of your choice afterwards. The grounds are very nice and clean with activities to do. The food is a bit on the expensive side but is high quality and tasty. The beer is really the star of this place though. A really great selection of standards and innovative rotating handles that will keep you coming back. Recommend the journey out here!
The absolute worst tour of any facility I have ever experienced. Scott completely wasted our time with dumb stories regarding how the founder (Omar - described to us as a Type-A drunk) had to install bathrooms and plumbing to open the brewery. We all watched in awe as he drank his beer and rambled about nonsense. He explained NOTHING about brewing beer, but we did learn all about his mother, Omar's wife's job, the brewmaster's failed rock and movie career, how much it costs to rent a chop saw in Minneapolis, etc. We are not sure if you even get a tasting at the end - we left after an HOUR of wasted time with him. If you want to taste the absolute worst beer ever - go to the tap room and get a glass of Dumpster Fire. It is indescribably horrible. We could not finish one glass between 5 of us. Furious and Bender are actually OK - get them at a liquor store. Don't waste your time driving to this place. Just go to any bar in the city and have fun.
We took the tour and it was really cool. Amazing scale. Their beer has been enjoyed by the Twin Cities for a long time. Cool to see them expanding to other states and now into Canada.
I was expecting to enjoy a trip to Surly, but I didn't expect to love it. What a great place! Super food. Outstanding beer. Service was attentive but not overly so. Wonderful place to go. We'll be back soon.
The wait staff are awesome! Great pizza. Although I don't drink beer I will definitely be coming back here. The ambiance is great and the wait people are super friendly and knowledgeable. It shows that they love to work here!
A group of us went on a brewery tour with Em, she was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions and gave us a lot of funny little stories. I have not had wood fired pizza since I left Italy, excellent!!
What can I say... The best brewery in the cities! Surly is one of the best beers companies out there. Their beer is fantastic, and this location even more. You can have a nice dinner experience upstairs, or a more bar experience downstairs. They have all their beers on tap, and the food is excellent. A place that I want to come back every time!
I fancy myself as a somewhat eclectic beer drinker and restaurant patron. Three things this place has going for it: Good beer and 4 season seating, an impressive menu. We will be going back and bringing out of town guests.
Surly is so amazing. The beer selection is great and it's truly one of the best. Even if you don't drink beer or alcohol, the food is worthy to try. This place is always packed and has a Walmart size parking lot and I can see why.
I don t understand a single bad review. Not a single one. Any beer I tried was amazing and the pizza....oh my goodness....we flipped a coin and landed on mama fratellie.... SO GOOD!!!! I want to come again just to try them all.
Great beer and great food! The fried chicken sandwich was a worthwhile indulgence. We waited on the outdoor patio for a table, which took about 90 minutes, but on a beautiful evening the time went by quickly.
Great place to go for any occasion. The food is off the chain. I had fresh trout and my buddy had the shrimp and grits. Each entre comes with a suggested pairing of micro-brew. Abrasive is my first choice of brew. It is smooth, medium body beer with zero after taste. You will love it -
Josh was an amazing tour guide! He was very knowledgeable, with a good sense of humor, and had already thrown back some beer to get in the right mood for the tour. He rocked, the tour rocked, and of course the beer rocks!
It was Saturday evening, my husband, 4 our family and friends and I, went to Surly Brewing co the Minneapolis location off of Malcolm Ave . when we go there we were told the waiting is about 2 hours, we drove 45 minutes just to came here so we decided to wait for the two hours. In the main time the host advised us that we could go upstairs where they serve pizza and beer while we waiting we took our pager and went upstairs we ordered, pizzas and few pitchers of beer. We are playing games w each other s, laughing, having a good time. We are also the only black table in the establishment. When we asked our server for additional items off the menu we were told we can t be served, they said we are too intoxicated, and they refused to serv us. It hasn t even been an hour since we got here we are still waiting our table downstairs. We all responsible adults and we all are driving, none of us looked drunk. Yes we were laughing, we talked w excitements with each other s. IT WAS a racist accusation, when we spoken to the manager he told us we were pulling the race card. We were just in disbeliefs, Nobody in the restaurant stood up for us. As we were leaving few ppl from our group wanted to talk to the manager to really understand why, but he asked us to leave. Its 2019 there is NO reasons why we should be refused service based on THE COLOR OF OUR SKIN. Please spread the words and do not Dine here
