Every day I have gotten to spend on Skiing Beech Mountain has been a great memory! While there are not many long runs and not much varied terrain on Beech Mountain, the relatively cheaper cost makes up for it.
The staff turns over every year, but the staff have always been hospitable, which indicates good trainers/management. Gear rentals are not anything too special, but will absolutely get the job done, the food there at the bar, coffee shop and cafeteria are all pricier, but will give you a solid option and will prevent you from having to take valuable time out of your trip to leave the resort for food.
If you are considering other resorts in and around Watuaga county, check the skibeach website to see if the OZ run trail is open. When it is open, it is an absolute game changer not only because it is a long, steasy, blue run, but crucially it also takes crowds away from other runs on the mountain and makes the experience all the better.
I would absolutely recommend Beech if you are looking to make some memories and are not afraid to splash a little cash.

We LOVE beech mountain. They have the best instructors and staff. Everyone was so polite, kind, helpful and patient. We had a great experience.
My kids all beginners took lessons for 2 days and they had the best instructors. Hugh and Eric are AMAZING instructors, so patient and great with kids.
They bathrooms were very clean and you could tell they cleaned it daily.
Everyone we talked too was so helpful, the staff was amazing !! Everyone had great attitudes and was happy to help.
We went Sunday and picked up our rentals and lift tickets. We also signed our kids up for ski school and week in advance.
My family skied Monday and Tuesday. I highly recommend going during the week.
Thank you beech mountain for a wonderful experience.
Also I meet the nicest employee Hannah, I saw her working in a few different places and she always was helpful and so polite.
Despite decent east coast slopes, I recommend avoiding this resort at all costs...
Our families were looking for a new spot for our annual trip that was a shorter drive than Snowshoe, WV, but despite decent slopes at Beech Mountain, the resort, their policies, and their staff fell way short of expectations; so it appears we'll need to keep looking.
A number of things disappointed on this trip, to the point we actually ended it to come home a full day earlier than planned (and paid for).
The first day the resort suffered a catastrophic plumbing failure that shutdown all but one indoor bathroom for the entire resort. Their solution was several portable toilets (with no hand-washing stations) to serve all of the thousand plus guests. What could go wrong? To make matters worse they just kept selling more tickets and bringing more people in without having any facilities to support it.
The classes for the kids were mostly a waste of money, as they were obviously understaffed (the staff even admitted it), and it amounted to little more than babysitting. We had prepaid three lessons for our daughter prior to arrival. Each lesson my daughter spent the first 45-60 mins of a 3 hour lesson waiting for all the other kids to get their equipment. They then went out to an overcrowded bunny slope with too many people to even move, so they mostly stood around. With 15 mins left in her first lesson they were actually calling my cell phone to come pick her up, because they apparently just decided to stop early. Only 1 out of the 3 lessons did she actually get any real time on the mountain.
The lines for tickets, classes, "bathrooms", and the lifts themselves were horrible (see the pictures). The portable toilet situation had quickly become beyond disgusting and unusable. By day 3 we'd had enough, and and all the families agreed the best thing to do was head home a day early.
However, trying to speak to management was an equally bad experience. We tried to get a partial refund under the circumstances for some of the classes and the unused lift tickets, but after getting redirected from building to building and line to line, the "manager" eventually refused citing their 'no refunds all sales final' policy.
I realize this is a long review, but it's accurate, and I just had to share. If I'd seen an honest review like this, I would have at least paused to consider before booking. It's a shame too, because the slopes are decent and this really could be an east coast gem with some changes (e.g. smaller class ratios, don't oversell the tickets, etc.). I admit the plumbing they couldn't have prevented or predicted, but how they handled it, and their unwillingness to make an exception to the refund policy was ridiculous.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! Horrible experience today. Paid a fortune and couldn t even ski. Waited 3 hours in line to get our skis, which we had pre-ordered. (We got there at 8:45 a.m.)
The lodge was disgusting, no one wearing a mask, 45 minutes in line to get lunch. Didn t see 1 person clean anything. Guaranteed to have a huge Corona outbreak bc not one person was regulating or telling people to put on their mask. The tables in the lodge were so dirty, and nothing around to clean them with.
THERE ARE NO BATHROOMS. all the bathrooms are closed except portapotties. Try taking a young child in there to use the bathroom with ski gear on. The bathrooms were a absolutely disgusting and not enough for the thousands of people who were there.
Also no lockers. So if you rent skis there you have no where put your stuff. Ridiculous.
We have been coming here for 20 years and may not come back due to the horrible experience today.
Tried to talk to someone there and they told me no refunds, no exceptions, and wouldn t even have a conversation with me. So disappointed and upset.
We had a group of 9 ppl, all beginner and some never skied before. Rental gear perfectly matched. Some of the slopes were closed due to weather, and that's something that resort has null control off, so can't really count it against them as some reviewers did. We had a blast and will definetly come back!
Not bad for what it is. It's no rocky mountain skiing but it was actually decent slopes. Not far from major cities so makes for a nice weekend getaway. My only gripe is that there are a lot of perplexing rules about purchasing the lift passes. You can't buy multiple days in advance and have to pick up tickets for the following day after 4pm the day prior.
Very rude lazy staff. Made elderly, 4 kids under 10 walk up the mountain. We got to lift right at 9:01 and we're staying 500 yard up the mountain. They shut lift down and made us and elderly people walk, instead of calling up to give us a lift to get the house.. I had a 7 year old with ski boots on.. too much money to be this dam rude to there customers.
Had fun snow tubing with family of all ages. They only allow 50 per session, which is great because no waiting in lines and covid distancing. Masks were required, but it's cold, so it wasn't an issue. They have a "magic carpet " that More
Beech mountain has several great lifts for skiing/snowboarding and fun for the kiddos with snow tubing and ice skating. Their brewery is right in the village along with a restaurant making snacks and breaks super convenient. Beech also hosts great music and bands frequently, as well as yoga at the top of the mountain- 5506 bar during warmer months
First and last trip to this resort. We were excited to visit and pre-registered in advance because we thought they were limiting the number of visitors.
We waited in line for rentals for almost 3 hours. Main bathrooms were closed and forced skiers to use portable bathrooms or walk down the steps for actual bathroom. First time to the bathroom there was no soap.
The lodge was a complete joke. Tables were pushed together with NO social distancing. People were hanging out for extended periods of time (maybe all day) with no mask (because they were sitting). The crowd was ridiculous and unsafe. There didn't appear to be any representive from the resort controlling the crowd in the lodge. The only positive Covid precaution was the resort was very firm about wearing mask outside around lifts, waiting in line etc.
Skiing was okay- not the best. At least one lift was closed and some lift lines were long. There was little organization for getting on the lift.
Extremely disappointing for a very expensive family experience.
Overall a solid experience. I liked the vibe at Beech better but the runs were a little shorter than at Sugar. Expect both to be slammed on the weekends.
This is our favorite one. Much better than Sugar Mountain in my opinion. I Wish Beech mountain offered some sore of hourly system, rather than paying for seertain hours like 9am-1, 1-5pm, etc.... They should have something like this $ price for 3 hours, $ that price for 5 hours, etc.. It sucks pay for 1pm-5pm if you get there at 2 pm....
Beech resort is what someone would expect when they are going east coast skiing. The runs arent that steep, they weren t groomed, people do not know how to handle themselves around others on the mountain, and the service was not that great. I went with a group of boys and if they needed ski lessons they were provided in our package but they were only for one hour and afterwards I asked them how it was and the tips they were saying they learned were just wrong when it comes to skiing. But even with the lessons people feel like they are able to handle themselves on the one black they had open (their main one and only good run was closed yet they still made you pay the 70 dollars for a lift tickets). However on the open black it was completely crowded and people were trying to traverse their way down the slope by cutting across the entire thing. Ski patrol would occasionally be on the side and watch them endanger others and not do anything about it. Also, ski patrol wan not great at all. I decided one run early in the morning I was going to go down a blue and just try to collect speed bc there was plenty of space and not many people on the mountain. I complete my run totally fine and end up by the terrain park and a ski patrol member pulls up to me and tells me to wait to get on the lift. I was confused and then he said, You have to ski more in control, you weren t turning, and it got you out of control and you could hit someone if they fell over, I was kind of shocked when he said this because I have been skiing all my life and was just trying to go fast on a mostly empty run while staying out of everyone s way. I didn t protest much because I didn t think anything of it and tried to leave when I thought he was done but he told me to wait and then snipped off a corner of my ticket and put a mark on it and I was completely shocked. This guy had basically blacklisted me for trying to have fun out of everyone s way. I instantly got away from him and then left in the next hour. It was completely unnecessary and an over use of power. But aside from ski patrol having bad service the lift attendees did not want to clear the snow under the loading are for when you were trying to get on. Their lifts also had seats that loaded close to the ground and the attendees didn t want to pull it back for you to sit on. It s not required but it s just common courtesy. However, their lift lines were short and the lifts did not take that long to get to the top. Only good thing about this place because after you got to the top you have access to one black and it was in terrible condition. Their were bumps all across the slope in random places (not moguls) and the slope had an un groomed uneven surface so you would come across patches of hard snow and then instantly be thrown into a pile of powder. Overall not a good experience I recommend sugar or just going real skiing out west.
Enjoyed the slopes here more than at sugar mountain. They offer free lessons for begginers. We will be returning on our next trip to the Boone, NC area.
Horrible experience. We took family to Beech Mountain this past weekend. Four adults and one child. We went to snow tube. When we got there and went to purchase tickets, no one told us that due to the day befores weather, the snow was extremely slushy and not good for tubing. We bought our tickets and then proceeded to tube. The snow was so bad we couldn't even get the tube to slide. So my husband had to push us to get started. Once started we only slid about 10 ft. Then we had to walk the rest of the way down pulling our tube and slushing through wet snow . When we got back to the top and asked for a refund their response was very rude. No refunds . We where then sent to administration. Once I walked in another woman was in thier already complaining and they refused a refund saying they where not authorized to give one. They gave use a form to fill out and we where told that they would call us within 24 hrs. Here we are 72 hours later and I have not heard anything and still have not gotten a refund. I will never take a chance on Beech Mountain Resort again . They have lost our business from now on and I do not recommend them. Hawks Nest, Sugar Mountain are both way nicer and have better business ethics and practices.
Fun music, great skiing/boarding, great Mtn bike runs in the summer, plenty to do. The views are amazing. Even when weather doesn t cooperate you will always have something to do at Beech. The live music, brewery, ice skating, etc all provide great opportunities for fun. Obviously everyone can get disappointed when Mother Nature doesn t make your vacation perfect, but the slopes to their best to keep you entertained.
I have been going to Beech Mountain Resort for almost 40 years...great place to take the entire family...friendly staff...great entertainment and food...the brewery is a nice addition...must visit!
We were there on Dec 25th and 26th, 2020. It had rained and snowed heavily the night before.
They had sign to put on masks and maintain distances but by far a majority of the people did not care. Almost to a point where no one cared.
There was no one managing the queue and saw one person and most of the time just two people on the 4 person chair lift. Due to COVID19, not sure how this could have been fixed.
They had icing issues so most of the trails were closed. That s out of everyone s control, but the queue situation is not. They should do better. Slopes were largely empty because everyone was at the base.
The resort itself was good. Good access from the parking lots. Parking lots could be a bit wider or made one way. There was a lack of dropping area which made it worse. The slopes were simpler and shorter than sugar mountain. Not all of them were open so there could be others that are better. The lifts were slow, too slow. The lifts had wooden benches. In a 8 degree weather, it made it worse. That s really not good that they have wooden chairlifts. Though, 4 person chairlift had cushion seats.
We only made two runs on Friday and left because there were too many people not following COVID19 precautions.
Easy going place. The somewhat beginner ski group that I was with all agreed that they liked it better than Sugar Mountain bc it was less packed and more low key.
