We couldn't of been more excited to stay here for the first leg of our honeymoon trip. A cool historic building in the center of town to celebrate our wedding. What could be better?
We arrived on a red eye immediately after our wedding at 11AM, we had setup an early check in ahead of time for 11. We were told they were still preparing our room and it should be ready shortly. Being a little under dressed (t-shirt and shorts) and unable to change we opted out of waiting in the lobby. We cheerfully set our to explore the area and get some lunch while we waited, returning around 1PM. Unfortunately the room was still not ready. Exhausted from the travel, we ended up having to awkwardly wait around the lobby til 3pm and were made to feel very uncomfortable for being under dressed. Other guests were checked in while we waited, but I wasn't upset since I thought they might be waiting for an upgraded room for us since it was our honeymoon and I have status with Marriott (Gold).
Nope! Our room was the bare minimum.
Oh well, we caught up on sleep and made it a point to always come and go in a minimum of business casual since we felt so uncomfortable upon arrival. We still stood out a bit by being much younger than other patrons (mid 20s), but we otherwise blended in. Coming in each evening we were cheerfully greeted with welcomes like, "Sir, are you staying here this evening?", "Can we point you in the direction of the train station?", or my personal favorite after another couple walked in without a remark just before us, "We need to see your room key before you can come in".
This is my 3rd time in London and I have never experienced anything similar at other hotels. My advice to anyone who looks young is to look elsewhere. The place across the street has a better view, the same location, and is likely cheaper.
