Awesome Base- i was stationed here in 2005 - loved it
The base pollutes the environment and terrorizes the residents. And sometimes an F16 falls out of the sky uncontrollably.
I lived there as a kid when my father was in the military from 85 to 89 love everything about it best time of my as a young kid bowling aya and even made the papers when we played basketball back then
Loved it. Out in the country but makes you experience the country. Was there for 2 years as well.
What a blast from the past. Stationed at Spang in 86/87. Wished i could have stayed longer, but forced to make a decision by the 'early-out' program. Brother actually visited here a few years ago for PJ training. Good time, loved Germany. Site felt a little 'remote', but that's why you buy a hand-me-down car! (Kim, you out there somewhere?)
One of the best bases to get stationed at. You can effectively leapfrog outward and explore a great deal of Europe from here using bases to spend the night, or local hotels. Bx is smaller compared to Ramstein, but proximity to that base is within a day trip. TLF has better housekeeping then Ramstein too.
My husband was stationed at Spangdahlem from '82 to '85, it was a great experience.
Then, there wasn't any of the things I'm now reading about, the commissary was in base housing and, very tiny, the new, bigger one was being built when we left.
I imagine a lot of things have changed...is there still a racetrack? We raced there on the oval dirt track.
Like I said, it was a great experience, but, I was glad to touch down in Philly three years later.
Maybe others, who were there during the same time, will see my name here and, reach out to me!
I was stationed in 1982/1983. I was in the Army working in HEADQUARTERS BATTERY. We where there for support. 2/62nd AIR Defense Artillery Unit. I was 19 years old at the time. I lived on the German economy in a town called Wittlich ( spelling maybe wrong) but I enjoyed the culture. The German soldiers I encountered where very nice. Some was as you g as 15 years old. Enjoyed Bitburg also. The food was really good. Played basketball, went to the bowling alley often. Very small Base back then. But had some great times. Went to the field svery month. It s a very very cold place. Appreciated serving my country. Greatest moved I decided as a young man.
I was stationed there from 1979 to 1982. I was just 18, and on my own for the first time. INCREDIBLE experience for a young man in the height of the Cold War, and what was then West Germany. I protected nuclear weapons there (52nd SS/SP) in the QRA/WSA as a ABGD Security Specialist. I often miss not being there (friends) as I had a REALLY good time there. The German people were in most situations very kind to me, and had no ill feelings because of WW2.
I was there from March 1969 until May 1971 Great place to be. Best time of my young life. The exchange rate was 4 Marks to a dollar so beer and food was cheap. I went back a few years ago and it wasn't' the same.
Nice day, the cells and the food are at the top however the toilets are to be avoided (small lack of hygiene)
Loved it there. The Anthony's Pizza there was great and I am familiar with Anthony's Pizza because it on every Air Base and Air Force Base. But anyway the C5s, C17s, A10s and F16s there where amazing, I saw the A10s being parked inside the hangars about a couple of years ago... But I can say it was beautiful..
I am happy when the US F16 season in Spangdahlem is finally gone!
Friends shouldn't bother the population with daily fighter jet noise, nor should they pollute our environment.
So in the flight from the Rnw 23 is the view super and perfect for taking pictures , only the MP is sometimes annoying, because you are right on the fence and everyone in the base on the road automatically drives into the centerline looks ... um In addition, at the roundabout at the main gate on the right side you have to turn into a dirt road and drive for about 2 kilometers along the Fenceline, you will automatically reach the centerline
I was amazed at how big and well equipped the base is.
I was stationed there from '89-'92. Got there in my early 20's. Loved it. The country is beautiful and the people are great. Fantastic food and festivals.
Great place, I used to be a trainer of F15 there, what reminds me the most is that I once saw a SB2C Helldiver Attack Bomber there. My father flew one as well.
