I tried to contact them like 5 times throughout the day and the Receptionist refuses to actually talk to me. Really horrible customer service for someone seeking help.

As an intern of this place all these reviews are simply false. The staff is super caring, the patients are happy, I have interacted with several of them always smiling. Most of these reviews are unfounded and just down right uneducated. Many, many, many reforms have taken place since the "children of darkness". It seems these people just watched a video and assume things have never EVER changed. That documentary was from a time where almost NOTHING was known about mental disorders. The norm was high dose of drugs and lack of compassion. You would be hard pressed to find a good facility ANYWHERE during that time. As the times changed, this facility has changed. I have personally interacted with the people of this institution and I have not heard one bad thing. Anyone can look at an OLD documentary of which encapsulates EVERY facility of the time and make a judgement.

If you care for anyone with a mental disability please do not send them here, it is a living hell. They overdose their patients with medicine and KILL them! This place should have been shut down after that bullshit murderer dr Caine killed those three kids. He needs to be hung and this place needs to be shut down.

I have absolutely no idea whether this place is good or not but it seems that many of the one star reviews are from people who saw a video of how this place operated 35 years ago. They have no one or know of anyone one there now yet gave it one star. Perhaps they need a stay at some psychiatric facility because they obviously need help. How can you get a good honest review of this place from stupid people that are putting the only experience that they have from some dated video that they saw which they found disturbing.

The Staff here isn't like what you see in the Children of Darkness Video. That is how it worked about 35 years ago, it is better now and people don't die.

My boyfriend is in this place he was send from coney island hospital. He tells me they don't give a person much food to eat its very noisy a lot of screaming hard to sleep they let you outside for like 10 minutes every day .I had called to let them know that he was hungry and he need quiet noone call me back .I hope he gets better fast I miss my boo and love him so much I pray for him the phone get shot down at a certain time I will make shore i take action to get him what he needs

Children of Darkness came out 35 years ago. Anyone have more recent experience of that place?

I also watched children of darkness and was horrified. I also have the knowledge to know that this was filmed in a time where mental health was under funded and hospitals were way under staffed. I believe that this place now has updated treatment and probably operates better than it did 30+ years ago. I honestly would like to visit and see how much the place and treatments have changed. I would think that this place is probably monitored by the state a little more closers nowadays.

I just finished watching Child Of Darkness and I am mortified that this place is still open! 69 deaths and counting how can this be allowed! Do the people of New York not care! With all the famous celebrities living in their big mansions couldn't a few get together and build a better place for the mentally ill! This tells me the world does not care about the mentally ill they just care about Real housewives of New York! My child was just admitted to a place in Houston Texas and I be damn if they let her die they will see the wrath like no other! Parents we are their voices let us be heard and protect our children! Never enroll your child here because it might be the last time you see him or her! Stop being Selffish you are not the only one in the world who has an ill child! God can and will do more you just have to ask him and be patient! I love all children and so should the world they were not asked to be brought here God wanted them here! It is a suitable place for patients with mental illnesses, where there is a lot of security and professionalism.
Very attentive and friendly staff and above all very accessible to any questions.

i learned a great american lesson in life through this facility as being inpatient. the doctor and the entire staff (sr II) did nothing but take my troubles in and clean my thoughts out...

Ok y'all I need you to understand something: review bombing this place because you saw Children of Darkness is like saying you won't visit Germany because you saw Triumph of the Will.

Children of Darkness was released in 1983. For reference, the shuttering of Staten Island's even more infamous Willowbrook State School didn't happen until 1987. Thats just the point in the history of mental health care they were at. It was the era of institutionalization, and that era came crumbling down with Willowbrook. Luckily were not in that era now, and neither South Beach nor Willowbrook are like that anymore.

Incompetency seems to thrive there. The demeanor of these professionals is narrow not to mention their system has no organization. When you speak it seems to be interrupted by a blind mindset with no relevance to current topic. I suggest to find honest professionals not senseless dolls. I understand it can be difficult to evaluate but there is no attempt just insignificant nonsense. They banter irrelevant diagnosis to keep you coming back with unaddressed and imaginary issues. I went for help but they ve only sent me in circles, having their main focus on the clock.

after seeing a Documentary about this place. I want to have this place shut down !!!! Dr Elliot Gross who killed these poor children and all other staff should be prosecuted fast. He"s Dr Mangle . All you people should suffer!11 Your suppose to care for these people not abuse them !!! you IDIOTS.

I called to get information on what is the clothing code for the patients. The call went straight to an automated line. It said Dial 0 to get the get the operator. I dailed 0, security answered, and stated if not a security question he can't answer the question. No effort not helpful at all.

NYS needs to learn from WillowBrook and its history how to improve , not duplicate! Haven't we learned yet? Punishment without compassion or nurture will never improve the lives of people needing mental healing. It is counterproductive and South Beach Psychiatric Center is a waste of taxpayers dollars!

Killing patients? I watched the Children Of Darkness and I must say, this is the exact reason I was terrified when I was almost hospitalized.

I will give it a 3 because really who wants to rate there stay 5 star in a looney bin. I had a long stay here not by choice. They helped me get home to my daughter. Recovered my id, social, and free plane ticket back to chicago. In there they have computer time and acess. A lady who cuts your hair at no cost and does an amazing job. Also they acomidated my kosher food diet and had jewish study. I enjoyed art therpy my councler was great. And a ladies group where we got to do and show an activity that makes us feel empowered. Now i hear about the deaths that happend here scary to think... But my exsprence wasnt too bad alot of waiting but the staff really where careing and helpful.

This Psychiatric Center should be shut down because there has been so many deaths.
Children are not being helped there they are only being drugged so they can clam down they need better nurses and A MUCH BETTER DOC.

WOW, You guys suck at your job! First, you let your ignorant untrained staff bake a genius child (Andrew Zamora), and worst of all you let a mentally ill mother-killer escape!!! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE! I've seen Children of Darkness, and it opened up a whole new window for me. I've been interested in these cases before I saw the documentary, but it put this into a whole new light!!! Also from a blind interview from Children of Darkness one of the caretakers said "Anybody could die there. Anybody could come into an overcrowded, understaffed unit and react so badly they could die. Anybody" and another said "and another portion of the time I see them as potential sources of aggravation for me. There's nobody I'm dealing with that I love, and just to be sure that I don't feel any sort of attachment like that, I just go to the opposite extreme. I still have a hard time seeing the people I'm dealing with as people". Please, heed my word and don't send your mentally ill to this hell on earth.

I have no direct experience with this hell hole but after watching Children of Darkness and researching this facility further I've learned about the horrific events that take place. It is possible that the facility is under new management/ control with all new staff as of recent, but if not then those responsible for the horrific treatment of patients should have the same things done to them that has been done to the defenseless who are tortured and killed; and may they suffer and rot in hell.

Just got done watching, the documentary "Children of Darkness filmed in 1983, showing how several children have died at this facility. This disgust me. And to see this place is still open, is beyond my belief. I think if a facility has several of its patients killed, by malpractice, that the facility should be closed down, and the building bulldozed. After the area is cleaned up from the debris, the land can be used to build a better psychiatric facility whose doctors actually care for their patients. The destruction of a malpracticing facility, symbolizes a RIP to the victims who met their untimely deaths. I feel its the only way to rectify this whole situation. It is possible in this day and time, that the facility is currently under new management with better practices. But after a history of deaths, this establishment shouldn't have been able to stay open.

a family member is there now & very happy. Staff is pleasant, they had a labor day barbecue, there are nice activities & they take them outside twice daily.
