Great, moderately-priced Scandinavian cuisine in an adorable gift shop/cafeteria setting inside Scandinavia House. Gorgeously poached eggs, delicious cocktails and Swedish meatballs that pick up where IKEA's value-minded dish leaves off.

Pretty authentic Scandinavian with an American twist. Attentive waiter. Quick service. The meatballs are not quite like the best meatballs you can get in Sweden but the salmon was very good and the desert as well. Extra plus for having Semlor!

Nice selection of traditional Scandinavian cuisine, including gravlax, several herring dishes, and Swedish meatballs. There are also a variety of salads and vegetarian dishes. Prices are moderate with a nice three course prix fix menu. A selection of wines and beers are available.

I really liked this place. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They accommodate customers requests perfectly. I had double espresso and the Swedish waffles with jam and whipped cream. The taste was perfect. They have a full food menu. Excellent restaurant for nordic flavors and dishes.

"For someone who has lived and spent a lot of time in Copenhagen, I was very excited to try the highly recommended Smorgas Chef in NYC. We made reservations a week in advance and we were very excited! Upon our arrival, we saw that it was a very nice place in a very nice location. The staff and greeting people were extremely professional and welcoming to us. They sat us almost immediately and tended to use with great care. Now, the most important part is the food. I can say with certainty that this is some of the best Scandinavian food I have ever had. As some of my Danish friends would say, this place is extremely ""hyggle."" Overall, the experience was fantastic and I highly recommend everyone to try it out.

The only bad thing is finding parking!"

When Smorgas Chef no longer serves wine in hot-from-the-dishwasher glasses, serves soup in cold bowls, plays music too loud for tables under the speakers and plays music without commercial interruption for face cream, please let me know.

Food was great. Ambience was a little weird in the back of a shop, front of a museum, but we had a three-person business meeting and it totally worked. I already said we all enjoyed the food but the coffee was incredible.

This is such a cool place in the middle of Manhattan. Its a farm to table concept as all the food is super fresh. We went for brunch and the gets come from their chicken coop. I had the waffles which were different from any other waffles I had in the city. The waffles here are think and have a nice crispy, chewy texture. They are served with cream and strawberries. Absolutely delicious!!

Was just walking back from shopping on 5th Avenue and decided to stop in for an 8 p.m. Dinner. Didn't know what to expect -- and it was delicious. The Smorgasbord featured gravlax, herring two ways, Apple/beet salad, cucumber salad. a delicious potato/cheese gratin of sorts and the best of all Swedish meatballs with lingonberries. Great service, adorable waitress and odd but relaxing atmosphere. I'll go back. Oh, and save room for the Princess cake.

I agree that the atmosphere is odd. The tree is cute but it reminds me of a mall cafeteria. The wait staff and young lady working in the shop in the front were lovely.

The gravlaks was good, but not great. The salmon I had for my entree was very good.

The white wine from Australia was delicious.

The place is smaller than it appears in photos. The staff is very attentive.

The dishes are for the most part, very well done. The only let down is the meatballs, but that s mostly because of the price to quality expected.

I've been eating here for years, and give it three stars. When I visit Scandinavia House for a concert, movie or exhibit this is where I eat, except when I'm rushed for time and just have a salad at Starbucks.
Advantages: there are very few places open in the area on evenings and weekends with table service. Those in the hotels are expensive and unimpressive. Here you have table service with a (limited) wine and beer menu at reasonable prices. The birch tree in the center is charming and the lobby shops are interesting. Women in particular like this place because the decor is bright and children are welcome.
Disadvantages: Smorgas Chef is basically a dressed-up coffee shop with some Scandinavian dishes. The menu is short and you will tire of it pretty quickly. I don't even bother with dessert- they have three and none are really good or bad. The wait staff is limited and they rush around like mad when it's busy.

In addition to the dishes normally not served elsewhere, there is clearly love put into all of their creations. The herring four way, seafood chowder and swedish meatballs are among my favorites. The dining experience is different as well, as they are situated behind a storefront with merchandise sitting next to you. This is a nice place to go to when you want to have good food with a relaxed and unique atmosphere.

Classic genuine Scandinavian food. We had the Icelandic cod and the cauliflower over a cheesy bed of barley - so darn yummy, all of them just melt in your mouth. The marzipan princess cake is light and with a tinge of almond taste to it - definitely a must try.

The food was fresh but limited. Would like to see alcohol menu expanded to include traditional Aquavits from Scandinavia and get some IPAs on the beer menu. Had the Pale Ale and the Pear Cider. Had a party of about 10 of us and the waiter More

I'm a little bummed with the food here. I ordered the swedish meatballs and they were served suspiciously fast. I ate a few and they were lukewarm. So then, I cut into them and saw one was undercooked. I'm also 5 months pregnant. I feel like the meatballs are just recycled. I'd avoid them.

Luckily, the Farmer's Omelette was good as were the Swedish waffles and coffee. Service was good and accommodating.

I eat in this place many times a year! This is my favorite restaurant to pass a nice evening. I go to this spot at least once a month. The food is of high quality, the team is courteous and the charge is fair. I enjoy going in this spot to have a good meal.

Really nice restaurant. Staff could have been a bit more friendly. Meat balls were good, drinks were nice but it was bit more expensive than we thought. Having swedish back ground it was up to the high standards.

We like a lot eating out. Last night we found this superb place which friends told us about. We spent a delightful time there with fine food and a professional crew and a professional chief cook. We put this restaurant in our list and we shall certainly go again very soon. Highly recommended.

I love love love this place. Have been here twice, but we preferred to sit outside on Stone Street and I always get the vegetarian burger with fries. It is expensive but with it. The burger if big enough for two. You can taste the freshness and taste of everything that's in it. Highly recommend it.

The most delicious Gravlox in NYC. Quick service, decent ambiance for midtown lunch. Not the most ornate nor a winner of Swedish design awards but comfortable and functional. Again, the Gravlox and Scandanavian beers are worth the stop!

This is one of those restaurants that you will totally miss if just walking by. When looking into the window it looks like just a store but the actually seating is behind it. It was a bit odd but the food more than made up for it. I was really looking forward to trying out some beer but at $17 a pint...i passed. Over all it's worth a look and only 1 of 2 scandinavian restaurants in Manhattan

If you're seeing Frozen on Broadway, you haaaaaave to make Scandinavian cuisine part of your plans, which is how I found Smorgas Chef. I strongly believe in appropriate pairing of snacks and experiences.

It's tucked into the cultural center next to a gift shop, which I didn't expect but it's still a nice, simple restaurant. There are multi-course dining options which we both took advantage of.

The food was delicious! An interesting chance to try Swedish eats in a non-fussy environment.

We'd been meaning to try out this restaurant for sometime now and finally went there for a Sunday brunch.

Being situated in Scandinavian House we did have to order a dish with meatballs in it. We started off with the Smorgasbord and the Swedish Meatballs. The former having a melange of different Scandinavian foods and the latter with yummy meatballs and gravy, very similar to the ones you get from IKEA!

The two desserts we had were also pleasant. A princess cake and flourless chocolate cake. The princess cake was sweet with lots of different textures. The chocolate cake was very solid but very rich in flavour.

The restaurant itself is almost canteen like with the furniture and situated between 2 gift shop areas.

Service was pretty quick and it wasn't too loud since there weren't many other parties in there at the time.

Reasonably priced in the middle of Manhattan, this restaurant reminded me of Norway. Everything from the Danish Bread to the Norwegian salmon tasted great and looked better. The ambiance was nice and clean and the service was relatively quick.

While the service was alright, the food was very disappointing. I had dinner here, and we went with the prix-fix menu. I think that night they were also hosting the julborg(?) event, and must have been very busy. However, the food was very disappointing. It felt as though all the food had been reheated. I ordered soup, which was cold and I had to send it back to be reheated. I also ordered the meatballs, which were very dry and tasted frozen. The deserts were good. All in all, I've had better food at Ikea
