amazing place for crafting, making costumes, and all kinds of do it yourself projects

I've been wanting to go to the Scrap Exchange for several years, but didn't take the time until recently. What a fabulous idea to create a place for people and businesses to donate items that would otherwise end up in the dump. And even more fabulous that the concept is to make art with these items. As a general contractor, I was able to make some donations of sample materials that would have otherwise been thrown away. Before you toss something in the trash, check the website to see if they accept donations for that item. You might be surprised. They have all kinds of stuff. I also took the opportunity to use the Make and Take Room for a random art project. It's nice to get the creative juices flowing using random materials. This is a great place for kids and adults also.

I love the Scrap Exchange! What an amazing community resource. Great events, tutorials, art shows, meetups all year long.

Amazing place, offers quite a rainbow of varieties. Personnel is kind and good hearted. Affordable, full of stories. An enjoyable and lovely place where you can find anything you can imagine.

The Scrap Exchange is a great place to find materials for projects and also things you didn't know you wanted! A great example of upcycling, where materials are saved from the landfill and are sorted and organized so that you can buy them.

The store is organized so that it is easy to find the areas that include fabric, paper goods, empty boxes, and also the other strange things that come in (including a mounted swordfish, a large suitcase, and a huge bin of small plastic balls.)

I love to come here when I have a project in mind, or just to get some materials to get creative.

This place is an artist s dream. But also a mom s dream as kids love to play with anything and everything. It s good to go with a project in mind because you ll be overwhelmed otherwise, there s quite literally a little bit of everything. Fabric scraps, stickers, foam, hats and luggage, awards, coffee bean sacks, buttons, patterns, I could go on forever. Great place to start dabbling in art since everything is so cheap!

An amazing place. Every city should have a Scrap Exchange. As a set designer, costume designer, Halloween costume-maker, and all-around thrift queen, the scrap exchange has blessed me with its treasures countless times.

Officially my new favorite store. It was full of craft items and recycled bits and bobs for art projects. If you are an artist or a crafter check this place out!!!

The Scrap Exchange is the best place to find anything, for any project you're working on! From home improvement, to school projects, and everything in between, you'll find plenty of things to do them all, and for really great prices too!

My girlfriend and I absolutely enjoy going here! We started going here this past spring but hadn't been back until recently. The whole store, inside and out, has been completely renovated, and generally just "cleaned up" making it appear very nice and welcoming. Also I cannot stress enough how amazing some of the deals are inside. Her and I geocache and we were able to find a LOT of geocaching supplies for just $3!!! Cannot be beat, 11/10.

Soooooo awesome! Endless amounts of stuff and things to upcycle and use for all sorts of projects. Being there puts me in the mood to get creative and makes me feel crafty. A great way to reuse items that might normally end up in a landfill.

Digging around at the Scrap is an adventure! If you're planning a party, or are working on crafts, or just want to entertain yourself stop in and look through the bins and shelves of old greeting cards, cloth, and all sorts of thing you'd never expect.

I love to buy needlecraft items here. Beautiful plates and bowls. Old lab glassware!

Ever think you want to get into a craft but think it's too expensive to even try? The Scrap Exchange provides a less expensive place to explore that craft. I purchased a $6 assorted fabric sample and I made a duvet cover that I'm using for the second year in a row.

I love this place, you can find all that you might need for your office such as paper clips staplers or for your crafts at a really good price, you can't even find brand new items in the original packaging at a really good price.

This is where I go for all my crafting needs! Fromantic small projects to giant random things I need for big displays I know I can find everything I need here. I love that they support the community and have have so many fun events!

Wow! It's good, it's a nice maze, full of surprises. Odds and ends galore. Be surprised every 10 steps, wait, no. Every three steps! Loved the experience. Yes, one of the floorings is made of actual maps of the world! Enjoy your imagination.

This is a fantastic place to find almost anything you could want in crafting (and more)! I love recycled materials and the staff is super friendly!

It was fun they have classes for different things and it is also like a thrift store with do many things like yarn,wool, and so much more!! I lived it the employees are soooo kind! Everything is so cheap here but great quality!

No matter what ur looking for. How ever crazy, wacky, strange or just stupid. They most likely have it. That place will definitely over whelm you looks like nothing but junk. Unless u find what ur looking for. I needed Leather pieces they had it. But the box was soooooooo stuffed and mixed up U couldn't shop for any of it. I gave up. Will try again another day.

This place is awesome! I visited it while I was in town and actually stopped by more than once. It has lots of odds and ends and seemed like a place where you never really know what you'll find. Great place for craft projects, home improvement, or art.

Easily one of my favorite places to go, here in Durham. So many cool little knick knacks and scraps to sort through, and the staff is always super friendly and helpful. The amount of items here can be intimidating at first, but you really find so many cool things. I find something new and exciting every single time I step foot in it!

I love this place!!! I normally go to the Durham Rescue Mission but came here for the first time a few months back and I am obsessed! They have the cutest holiday decorations plus discounts on already discounted items. I bought 6 items the other day for 4.35!

A fun place to go to look for odds and ends for arts and crafts. They get a lot of stuff that are curious looking doodads leftover from manufacturing processes of local businesses.

Highly-varied, but somewhat curated, collection of "stuff" (I have no other way to characterize the collection). The fabrics seem the largest type of thing, but there is random hardware, glassware, wood, ... Sometimes they have many identical items; sometimes a unique item.

What a cool place!! Weird, exciting stuff all over the place!!

They have expanded to the building diagonally from their current place. The new addition is more of a thrift store. With clothes, housewares, and the such. The original building is for the upcycle art supplies and fabrics.

Awesome stuff to upcycle. A playground for imaginative and creative minds. A treasure trove of raw materials of all kinds. Always something new.

What an amazing space full of surprises (materials) for artists, crafters, makers and more. You will always find something for your project. They have sewing and other craft classes too. Check out the thrift store next door.

This isn't your typical thrift store. It's more gear towards arts and crafts which is great! If you have projects in mind for a great price, this is the spot!

Been coming here for years, had my first experience with a manager today. She was insanely belittling, refused to let me complete my transaction or answer me as though I was a grown adult standing in front of her. It was very demeaning, and I don't know that I will go back.

If someone asks to check a price with the manager, just say no. She will treat it as the customers fault.

You can find everything and anything there. Very cheap. Very big. Very organized. Love this place.

This is undoubtedly my favorite place in Durham. It's recently lost a little bit of character with their expansion across the parking lot, but now you can actually walk around and find things! I've completed numerous hardware projects using recycled materials from The Scrap Exchange. Check my arcade and microphone! Almost all of them are from parts found here.

Great for creative kids too. Our 5 year old daughter begs to go on the weekend to see what crafting treasures she can find. This place has made our family life in Durham better. No doubt.

Eclectic assortment of odds and ends for artists, woodworkers, crafters, jewelrymakers at normally good prices. Some stuff is marked too high in my opinion, but normally good prices.

This is the ultimate place to get weird craft supplies and other cast-off oddities. Fabric, paper, bits of wood or other gadgets, old lab equipment, bottle caps, foam... If you've got a creative construction project planned, you couldn't ask for a better place to go.

I come down to Durham once a year for Christmas, and I am really looking forward for this year's Christmas partially because I love shopping here so much!
If you do any kind of crafting, collecting, or art, I highly recommend this place.

My favorite place to browse for all sorts of random stuff!

The Scrap Exchange is unique and fascinating. If you are creative, curious, or have high-functioning hoarder tendencies, you should visit. There is a conventional thrift store (a quite good one with home goods, books, clothes, and furniture), but next door there is a whole building FILLED with low costs 'scrap' materials. Mostly of the materials are art and creative supplies (paints, scrap wood, sewing materials, fabric scraps, leather, metal, etc) but also overstock medical supplies, garden and office equipment, and anything else that has been donated. Most items ar $0.25 - $2.00 or sold by the pound, but the occasional item can be $10 - $50

Great for kids. We took a fieldtrip here and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The creative opportunities are endless here. Your imagination is the limit.
