It is a beautiful spot, especially when the weather is calm, especially in the evening. You are near a lot of city activity, but it can seem so quiet. It is something that ought not to be displaced by development.

We visited on a cold day in February. Even though it was a cloudy day, the sun finally peaked thru, allowing me to take some great pictures. We walked down the pier to check out the schooner, fairy, tugboat and sailboat on display. From the tugboat is a great view onto Alcatraz and on the other side of the pier a great view onto the Golden Gate bridge. Sealions were taking naps on the pier and the museum had a lot of great information about San Francisco and its history. If your kid is interested in the Junior Ranger program, a badge will be given after completing some assignments.

Uhmm the last (recently added pics) are actually of the president McKinley monument at the Panhandle park, which is across Baker St. from the San Francisco DMV ~ which is adjacent to Golden Gate park (city & county of SF), --not-- Golden Gate National Park - someone in locations messed it up.

Its a serenely peaceful place to hang out and read something to relax with, except when something is going on that causes a ruckus. Or when too many pot-heads are up wind and they decide to start lighting up.

Regrettably lots of recreational pot smokers come to this place, at all hours. To pollute the air, I am sorry to report.

Nice national park site in the port of San Francisco. Nice environment with many different activities on the various piers. Several nice restaurants in the area. The historical site includes a museum building with a number of exhibitions about maritime shipping. Opposite is a pier where several historic ships are moored. These ships can be visited and offer a good overview of life and work on board. For example of sailing ships. For the youth there are fun activities on board.

Excellent addition to the National Park System. A variety of historic vessels, a visitor center with exhibits on par with an actual museum, and numerous events scheduled to further enrich the visitor makes this a great place. I like how the NPS actually employees people just to maintain the boats. That s dedication. You can t see San Francisco without seeing her boats.

Beautiful beach! Deserves 5 stars, but the signs EVERYWHERE that say NO PETS on the beach do nothing. Dog owners let their dogs pee everywhere, run all over people's beach towels and shake water all over their stuff, attack other dogs and do nothing about it. No security to protect the people who just want to enjoy the beach made for people.

They had a pier full of historic ships to board and walk around. The staff was working on the boats and were very happy to show anyone around and answer questions. It was a real travel in time to be on old sailboats that would go around the horn with tons of cargo in the hold. There were not many people there, and usually the captain's quarters, crew bunks, the tiller and cargo areas were open to view and were well lit. If you have a national park pass I think it was free.

We visited here on a Monday morning when there was no crowd. We really wanted to go on the sailing ship. We had a volunteer tour guide who gave us the complete tour and all the history of the ship. He was very good and made the tour a great experience for us.
I highly recommend it!!

The maritime stuff is a good place to take kids. The WPA murals and the history of the building is way more interesting. There is a room off to the side that was dedicated to one of the artists theory of color. The ceiling is painted as huge color wheel.

A wonderful effort is being put in here to save and restore some truly historic vessels. It was great to have open access to see their workshops and their use of traditional boat building practices.

About San Francisco Maritime National Park Association

San Francisco Maritime National Park Association: Preserving Our Maritime Heritage

The San Francisco Maritime National Park Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rich maritime heritage of San Francisco and the surrounding areas. Through education, preservation, and philanthropy, the association works tirelessly to ensure that this important part of our history is not lost.

The association was founded in 1950 with the goal of preserving historic ships and other maritime artifacts. Today, it operates as a partner with the National Park Service to manage several sites in San Francisco that are dedicated to maritime history.

One of these sites is the Hyde Street Pier, which features several historic vessels that have been restored and preserved for future generations. Visitors can explore these ships and learn about their role in shaping San Francisco's history as a major port city.

Another site managed by the association is Aquatic Park Cove, which offers opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, and other recreational activities. The park also includes several historic structures such as bathhouses and piers that provide a glimpse into life on the waterfront during different eras.

In addition to managing these sites, the association also provides educational programs for students of all ages. These programs include field trips to historic sites as well as classroom resources such as lesson plans and educational materials.

The association's commitment to preservation extends beyond physical artifacts. It also works to preserve traditional skills such as boatbuilding through apprenticeships and workshops. By passing on these skills to future generations, they ensure that our maritime heritage remains alive and vibrant.

Philanthropy plays an important role in supporting these efforts. The association relies on donations from individuals and organizations who share their passion for preserving our maritime heritage. These funds are used for everything from restoring historic vessels to providing scholarships for students interested in pursuing careers related to maritime history or conservation.

In conclusion, if you're interested in learning more about San Francisco's rich maritime history or want to support efforts aimed at preserving this important part of our past then look no further than The San Francisco Maritime National Park Association! With its dedication towards education, preservation, and philanthropy,it has become one of America's leading organizations working towards keeping alive its cultural heritage through various means including restoration projects like those undertaken at Hyde Street Pier or Aquatic Cove where visitors can experience firsthand what life was like back when sailors roamed freely along California coastlines!
